열왕기상 18장

1 그리고 여러 날들 후에 이러한 일이 있었으니, 세 번째 해에 주의 말씀이 엘리야에게 임하여 말씀하시기를, “가라. 너 자신을 아합에게 보이라. 그리하면 내가 땅 위에 비를 보내겠노라.” 하셨느니라.

1 And it came to pass after many days, that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, shew thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.

2 그러자 엘리야가 자신을 아합에게 보이러 갔더라. 그런데 사마리아에 심한 기근이 있었더라.

2 And Elijah went to shew himself unto Ahab. And there was a sore famine in Samaria.

3 그리고 아합이 오바댜를 불렀는데 오바댜는 그의 집의 총재였더라. (이제 오바댜는 주를 대단히 두려워하였더라.

3 And Ahab called Obadiah, which was the governor of his house. (Now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly:

4 이는 이세벨이 주의 예언자들을 근절하였을 때 이와 같은 일이 있었으니, 오바댜가 일백 명의 예언자들을 데려다가 그들을 한 동굴당 오십 명씩 숨겼고 그들을 빵과 물로 먹였기 때문이라.)

4 For it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)

5 그런즉 아합이 오바댜에게 말하기를, “그 지역 가운데로 가되 모든 물의 원천들에 도달하고, 모든 시내들에 도달하라. 혹시라도 우리가 풀을 발견하여 말들과 노새들을 살려 둘 수 있을까 함이니, 우리가 모든 짐승들을 잃지 않게 하려 함이라.” 하였더라.

5 And Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go into the land, unto all fountains of water, and unto all brooks: peradventure we may find grass to save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts.

6 그렇게 하여 그들이 그 지역을 구석구석 다니기 위해 자기들 사이에 그것을 나누었더라. 아합은 혼자서 한 길로 갔고 오바댜는 혼자서 다른 길로 갔더라.

6 So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.

7 ¶ 그런데 보라, 오바댜가 길 가운데 있었을 때, 엘리야가 그와 만났더라. 그런즉 그가 그를 알아보고 자기 얼굴을 대고 엎드리며 말하기를, “당신께서는 나의 주 그 엘리야시니이까?” 하였더라.

7 ¶ And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Art thou that my lord Elijah?

8 그러자 그가 그에게 대답하였더라. “나니라. 가라. 너의 주에게 ‘보소서, 엘리야가 여기 있나이다.’ 하고 알리라.”

8 And he answered him, I am: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.

9 이에 그가 이같이 말하였더라. “제가 무슨 죄를 지었기에, 당신께서는 당신의 종을 아합의 손안에 넘기시어 저를 살해하려고 하시나이까?

9 And he said, What have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me?

10 주 당신의 하나님께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하노니, 나의 주가 당신을 찾으려고 사람을 보내지 아니한 민족이나 왕국이 없나이다. 그리고 그들이 말하기를, ‘거기에는 그가 없도다.’ 하면 그는 그 왕국과 민족에게서 그들이 당신을 발견하지 못하였다는 맹세를 받아 냈나이다.

10 As the LORD thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not there; he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.

11 그런데 이제 당신께서 말씀하시기를, ‘가라. 너의 주에게 ‘보소서, 엘리야가 여기 있나이다.’라고 알리라.’ 하시나이다.

11 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.

12 그리하면 제가 당신을 떠나서 나가자마자 이러한 일이 있으리니, 주의 영이 당신을 제가 모르는 곳으로 이동시키실 것이니이다. 그렇게 하고 나면 제가 아합에게 이르러 알렸을 때는 그가 당신을 발견할 수 없을 것이고 그는 저를 살해할 것이니이다. 그러나 당신의 종인 저는 저의 어린 시절부터 주를 두려워하나이다.

12 And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of the LORD shall carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall slay me: but I thy servant fear the LORD from my youth.

13 이세벨이 주의 예언자들을 살해하였을 때 제가 행한 것, 곧 제가 어떻게 주의 예언자들에 속하는 일백 명의 장정들을 한 동굴당 오십 명씩 숨겼고 그들을 빵과 물로 먹였는지가 나의 주께 알려지지 아니하였나이까?

13 Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the LORD, how I hid an hundred men of the LORD'S prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?

14 그런데 지금 당신께서 말씀하시기를, ‘가라. 너의 주에게 ‘보소서, 엘리야가 여기 있나이다.’라고 알리라.’ 하시나이다. 그리하면 그가 저를 살해하리이다.”

14 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here: and he shall slay me.

15 그러자 엘리야가 말하기를, “내가 그 앞에 서서 섬기는 만군의 주께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하노니, 내가 반드시 오늘 나 자신을 그에게 보이겠노라.” 하였더라.

15 And Elijah said, As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely shew myself unto him to day.

16 그렇게 하여 오바댜가 아합을 만나러 가서 그에게 알렸더라. 그러자 아합이 엘리야를 만나러 갔더라.

16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him: and Ahab went to meet Elijah.

17 ¶ 그러자 아합이 엘리야를 보았을 때 이러한 일이 있었으니, 아합이 그에게 말하기를, “그대가 이스라엘을 괴롭게 하는 자인가?” 하였더라.

17 ¶ And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel?

18 이에 그가 이같이 대답하였더라. “저는 이스라엘을 괴롭게 한 적이 없나이다. 오히려 당신과 당신의 아버지의 집이 그러하니, 당신들이 주의 명령들을 저버린 것과, 당신이 바알들을 따른 점에서 그러하나이다.

18 And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim.

19 그러므로 이제 사람을 보내서 칼멜산으로 이스라엘 전체를 저에게 모아 주시고 바알의 예언자들 사백오십 명과 작은 수풀들의 예언자들 사백 명, 곧 이세벨의 식탁에서 먹는 자들을 모아 주소서.”

19 Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel's table.

20 그렇게 하여 아합이 이스라엘의 모든 자녀들에게 사람을 보내어 칼멜산으로 예언자들을 한데 모았더라.

20 So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.

21 그러자 엘리야가 온 백성에게 와서 말하기를, “너희가 두 의견들 사이에서 언제까지 주저하겠느냐? 만일 주가 하나님이시라면 그를 따르라. 그러나 만일 바알이 하나님이라면 그때는 그를 따르라.” 하였더라. 그런데 백성이 그에게 한 마디도 대답하지 아니하였더라.

21 And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.

22 그때 엘리야가 백성에게 이같이 말하였더라. “나, 바로 나만이 주의 예언자로서 남아 있도다. 그러나 바알의 예언자들은 사백오십 명의 남자들이라.

22 Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the LORD; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.

23 그러므로 그들로 하여금 수송아지들 두 마리를 우리에게 주게 하라. 그리하여 그들은 그들 자신을 위하여 수송아지 한 마리를 선택하고 그것을 조각조각 잘라서 그것을 장작 위에 올린 뒤에 아래에는 불을 놓지 말게 하라. 그리하면 나는 다른 수송아지를 손질하고 그것을 장작 위에 올린 뒤에 아래에는 불을 놓지 아니하겠노라.

23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under:

24 그런 다음에 너희는 너희 신들의 이름을 부르라. 그리고 나는 주의 이름을 부르겠노라. 그리하여 불로 응답하는 신, 그분이 곧 하나님이시라.” 그러자 온 백성이 대답하여 말하기를, “잘 말씀하셨나이다.” 하였더라.

24 And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

25 그리하여 엘리야가 바알의 예언자들에게 말하기를, “너희는 수송아지 한 마리를 너희 자신을 위하여 선택하고 그것을 먼저 손질하라. 이는 너희가 많기 때문이라. 그러고 나서 너희 신들의 이름을 부르라. 다만 아래에 불을 놓지는 말라.” 하였더라.

25 And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under.

26 그러자 그들이 자신들에게 주어진 수송아지를 취하고 그들이 그것을 손질하였으니, 아침부터 정오에 이르기까지 바알의 이름을 부르며 말하기를, “오, 바알이여, 우리의 말을 들어주소서.” 하였더라. 그러나 아무 음성이 없었고, 대답한 자도 아무도 없었더라. 그러자 만들어진 제단 위에서 그들이 날뛰었더라.

26 And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.

27 그러자 정오에 이러한 일이 있었으니, 엘리야가 그들을 조롱하여 말하기를, “크게 부르짖으라. 이는 그가 한 신이기 때문이라. 그가 대화 중이거나 그가 추격 중이거나 그가 어떤 여정 중에 있거나 어쩌면 그가 자고 있어서 반드시 깨어나야만 할 수 있도다.” 하였더라.

27 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.

28 이에 그들이 크게 부르짖고 그들의 방식에 따라 피가 그들의 몸 밖으로 쏟아져 나올 때까지 단도들과 작은 칼들로 그들의 몸을 그었더라.

28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.

29 그러자 한낮이 지났을 때 이러한 일이 있었으니, 그들이 저녁 희생 제물을 바치는 때까지 예언하였는데 음성도 없었고 대답하는 자도 아무도 없었으며 유념한 자도 아무도 없었더라.

29 And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.

30 이윽고 엘리야가 온 백성에게 말하기를, “나에게 가까이 오라.” 하였더라. 그러자 온 백성이 그에게 가까이 왔더라. 그런 다음에 그가 무너져 내린 주의 제단을 보수하였더라.

30 And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down.

31 그러자 엘리야가 야곱의 아들들의 지파들의 수에 따라 열두 개의 돌들을 취하였는데, 이 야곱에게는 주의 말씀이 임하여 “이스라엘이 너의 이름이 되리라.” 하고 말씀하셨더라.

31 And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name:

32 이에 그 돌들로 그가 주의 이름으로 한 제단을 쌓았더라. 그가 제단 주위를 두르는 물도랑을 팠으니, 두 도량의 씨를 담을 수 있을 만큼 컸더라.

32 And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD: and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.

33 그러자 그가 장작을 정렬하여 놓고 수송아지를 조각조각 잘라 그를 장작 위에 올려놓고 말하기를, “네 개의 통들에 물을 채우고 그것을 번제의 희생 제물 위와 장작 위에 쏟아부으라.” 하였더라.

33 And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood.

34 또 그가 말하기를, “두 번째로 그것을 행하라.” 하였더라. 그리하여 그들이 그것을 두 번 행하였더라. 또 그가 말하기를, “세 번째로 그것을 행하라.” 하였더라. 그리하여 그들이 그것을 세 번째로 행하였더라.

34 And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time.

35 그러자 물이 제단을 둘러 흘러갔더라. 그리고 그가 또한 물도랑을 물로 채웠더라.

35 And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.

36 그리고 저녁 희생 제물을 바치는 때에 이러한 일이 있었으니, 예언자 엘리야가 가까이 와서 이같이 말하였더라. “아브라함과 이삭과 이스라엘의 주 하나님이여, 당신께서 이스라엘 가운데 하나님으로 계시다는 것과 제가 당신의 종이라는 것과 제가 당신의 말씀에 따라 이 모든 것들을 행하였다는 것이 이날에 알려지게 하소서.

36 And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.

37 오, 주여, 내 말을 들으소서, 내 말을 들으소서. 그리하여 당신이 주 하나님이심과 당신께서 이 백성의 마음을 다시 원래대로 돌이키셨음을 그들이 알게 하소서.”

37 Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.

38 그때 주의 불이 떨어져 번제의 희생 제물과 장작과 돌들과 진토를 살랐으니, 물도랑 안에 있던 물을 죄다 핥았더라.

38 Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.

39 그러자 온 백성이 그것을 목격하였을 때, 그들이 그들의 얼굴을 대고 엎드렸더라. 그러면서 그들이 말하기를, “주, 그분이 하나님이시라. 주, 그분이 하나님이시라.” 하였더라.

39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God.

40 이에 엘리야가 그들에게 말하기를, “바알의 예언자들을 잡으라. 그들 중 한 명도 탈출하지 못하게 하라.” 하였더라. 그런즉 그들이 바알의 예언자들을 잡았더라. 그리고 엘리야가 그들을 키숀 시내로 데리고 내려갔으니, 거기서 그들을 살해하였더라.

40 And Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.

41 ¶ 그러자 엘리야가 아합에게 말하기를, “올라가소서. 먹고 마시소서. 이는 풍부한 양의 빗소리가 있기 때문이니이다.” 하였더라.

41 ¶ And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain.

42 그렇게 하여 아합이 먹고 마시려고 올라갔더라. 그러자 엘리야가 칼멜의 꼭대기로 올라갔더라. 그리고 그가 땅 위에 자신을 내던지고 자신의 얼굴을 그의 두 무릎들 사이에 넣었으니,

42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees,

43 그의 종에게 말하기를, “이제 올라가라. 바다 쪽을 바라보라.” 하였더라. 그러자 그가 올라가서 바라보고 말하기를, “아무것도 없나이다.” 하였더라. 그러자 그가 말하기를, “일곱 번 다시 가라.” 하였더라.

43 And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.

44 그러자 일곱 번째에 이러한 일이 있었으니, 그가 말하기를, “보소서, 바다에서 작은 구름 하나가 떠오르는데 어떤 남자의 손처럼 생겼나이다.” 하였더라. 그리고 그가 이같이 말하였더라. “올라가라. 아합에게 말하기를, ‘당신의 병거를 예비하시어 내려가소서. 이는 비가 당신을 멈추지 못하게 하려 함이니이다.’ 하라.”

44 And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not.

45 이윽고 그 사이에 이러한 일이 있었으니, 하늘이 구름들과 바람으로 캄캄하였고 엄청난 비가 있었더라. 그런즉 아합이 병거를 타고 이즈르엘로 갔더라.

45 And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.

46 그리고 주의 손이 엘리야 위에 있었더라. 그러자 그가 자신의 허리를 동여매고 이즈르엘의 입구까지 아합을 앞질러 달려갔더라.

46 And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
