사무엘기상 17장

1 이때 필리스티아인들이 전투하기 위하여 그들의 군사들을 한데 모았는데, 유다에 속해 있는 쇼코흐에 함께 모였고, 에페스담밈에서 쇼코흐와 아제카 사이에 진을 쳤더라.

1 Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim.

2 그러자 사울과 이스라엘 사람들이 함께 모여 엘라 골짜기 옆에 진을 쳤으며 필리스티아인들을 대적하여 전투 대열을 갖추었더라.

2 And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.

3 그리고 필리스티아인들은 한쪽에 있는 산 위에 섰고 이스라엘은 다른 쪽에 있는 산 위에 섰더라. 그리고 그들 사이에는 골짜기가 있었더라.

3 And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.

4 ¶ 그러고 나서 필리스티아인들의 진영에서 한 투사가 나왔는데, 골리앗이라는 이름으로 불리며 가드 출신이었더라. 그의 신장의 높이는 육 큐빗과 한 뼘이었더라.

4 ¶ And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.

5 그리고 그의 머리 위에는 놋 투구를 썼고 그는 미늘갑옷으로 무장하였는데 그 갑옷의 무게는 놋 오천 셰켈이었더라.

5 And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.

6 그리고 그의 두 다리에는 놋으로 된 경갑들이 있었고 그의 양 어깨 사이에는 놋으로 된 작은 방패 하나가 있었더라.

6 And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders.

7 그리고 그의 창 자루는 베틀 채 같았더라. 그리고 그의 창 촉은 육백 셰켈 무게의 쇠였더라. 그리고 누군가 방패를 든 채 그의 앞에서 갔더라.

7 And the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him.

8 그런즉 그가 서서 이스라엘의 군사들에게 부르짖으며 그들에게 이같이 말하였더라. “어찌하여 너희는 너희의 전투 대열을 갖추러 나왔느냐? 나는 필리스티아인이 아니고, 너희는 사울에게 종들이지 않느냐? 너희는 너희를 위하여 한 남자를 선택하여 그로 하여금 나에게로 내려오게 하라.

8 And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.

9 만일 그가 나와 싸워서 나를 죽일 수 있다면, 그때 우리는 너희의 종들이 되겠노라. 그러나 만일 내가 그에게 승리하여 그를 죽인다면 그때는 너희가 우리의 종들이 되어 우리를 섬기리라.”

9 If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.

10 이어서 그 필리스티아인이 말하기를, “내가 이날 이스라엘의 군사들에게 도전하노라. 나에게 한 남자를 내주어 우리가 서로 싸울 수 있게 하라.” 하였더라.

10 And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.

11 사울과 온 이스라엘이 그 필리스티아인의 말들을 들었을 때, 그들이 좌절하며 대단히 무서워하였더라.

11 When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.

12 ¶ 이때 다윗은 베들레헴유다의 그 에프랏족, 곧 그의 이름이 이새라 하는 자의 아들이었더라. 그리고 그에게 아들들이 여덟 명 있었더라. 그런즉 그 남자는 사울의 날들에 사람들 가운데서 노인으로 통하였더라.

12 ¶ Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehemjudah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man went among men for an old man in the days of Saul.

13 또 이새의 아들들 중 가장 연장자인 세 명이 전투하러 가서 사울을 따랐더라. 그리고 전투에 갔던, 그의 세 아들들의 이름들은 첫 태생인 엘리압이었고 그의 다음으로는 아비나답이었으며 셋째는 샴마흐였더라.

13 And the three eldest sons of Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

14 그런데 다윗은 막내였더라. 그런즉 가장 연장자인 세 명이 사울을 따랐더라.

14 And David was the youngest: and the three eldest followed Saul.

15 그러나 다윗은 사울에게로 왕래하며 베들레헴에 있는 자기 아버지의 양들을 먹였더라.

15 But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem.

16 그런데 그 필리스티아인은 아침부터 저녁까지 가까이 다가와서 사십 일 동안 자신을 나타냈더라.

16 And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.

17 그리고 이새가 그의 아들 다윗에게 이같이 말하였더라. “이제 너의 형제들을 위하여 이 볶아진 곡식의 일 에파와 이 빵 덩이 열 개를 취해 너의 형제들이 있는 진영으로 달려가라.

17 And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren;

18 그리고 이 치즈 열 개를 그들의 천인대장에게 날라다 주고 너의 형제들이 어떻게 지내는지 살피고 그들의 약조물을 가져오라.”

18 And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge.

19 이제 사울과 그들과 이스라엘의 모든 남자들이 필리스티아인들과 싸우면서 엘라 골짜기 가운데 있었더라.

19 Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.

20 ¶ 그리하여 다윗은 아침에 일찍 일어나 지키는 자에게 양들을 남겨 두고 이새가 그에게 명령한 대로 챙겨 갔더라. 이윽고 그가 참호에 이르렀더니, 군대가 싸우기 위해 출진하고 있었고 전투를 위하여 함성을 질렀더라.

20 ¶ And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle.

21 이는 이스라엘과 필리스티아인들이 전투 대열을 갖추고 군사와 군사가 대치하였기 때문이라.

21 For Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in array, army against army.

22 그런즉 다윗은 휴대품을 지키는 자의 손에 자신의 휴대품을 맡기고 군사 안으로 달려가서 자기 형제들에게 이르러 문안하였더라.

22 And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brethren.

23 그리고 그가 그들과 대화하는 동안, 보라, 가드 출신의 필리스티아인이요, 골리앗이라는 이름으로 불리는 투사가 필리스티아인들의 군사들에서 나와 올라왔고 똑같은 말들로 이야기하였더라. 이에 다윗이 그것들을 들었더라.

23 And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard them.

24 그런데 이스라엘의 모든 남자들, 곧 그들이 그 남자를 보자 그에게서 도망치며 심히 무서워하였더라.

24 And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.

25 그러면서 이스라엘 남자들이 말하기를, “너희는 올라온 이 남자를 보았느냐? 확실히 그는 이스라엘에 싸움을 걸려고 올라왔도다. 그런즉 이러한 일이 일어나리니, 그를 죽이는 사람, 그에게는 왕이 막대한 재물들로 부요하게 할 것이요, 그에게 자신의 딸을 주고 그의 아버지의 집을 이스라엘에서 자유롭게 할 것이라.” 하였더라.

25 And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel.

26 그러자 다윗이 자기 곁에 서 있던 남자들에게 이야기하며 말하기를, “이 필리스티아인을 죽여 이스라엘에서 치욕을 제거하는 사람에게 무엇이 이루어지겠느냐? 그런즉 이 할례받지 아니한 필리스티아인이 누구기에 그가 살아 계신 하나님의 군사들에게 싸움을 거느냐?” 하였더라.

26 And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?

27 이에 백성이 그에게 이러한 방식으로 대답하며 말하기를, “그를 죽이는 사람에게 이러한 일이 그와 같이 이루어지리라.” 하였더라.

27 And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.

28 ¶ 그러다가 그의 맏형 엘리압이 다윗이 그 사람들에게 이야기할 때 들었더라. 이에 엘리압의 분노가 다윗을 대적하여 타올랐으니, 그가 말하기를, “어찌하여 너는 여기로 내려왔느냐? 광야에 있는 그 적은 수의 양들을 네가 누구에게 맡겼느냐? 나는 너의 교만과 너의 마음의 간악함을 아노라. 이는 네 자신이 전투를 구경하려고 내려왔기 때문이라.” 하였더라.

28 ¶ And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.

29 그러자 다윗이 말하기를, “제가 지금 무엇을 하였나이까? 어찌 까닭이 하나도 없겠나이까?” 하였더라.

29 And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?

30 ¶ 그리하여 그가 그에게서 돌이켜 다른 이에게로 향하였으며 같은 방식으로 이야기하였더라. 이에 백성이 다시 전과 같은 방식으로 그에게 대답하였더라.

30 ¶ And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.

31 그러자 다윗이 이야기한 말들이 들려왔을 때 그들은 사울 앞에서 그것들을 되풀이해서 말하였더라. 그런즉 그가 사람을 보내어 그를 불렀더라.

31 And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul: and he sent for him.

32 ¶ 이에 다윗이 사울에게 말하기를, “그로 인하여 마음이 낙담하는 사람이 아무도 없게 하소서. 당신의 종이 가서 이 필리스티아인과 싸우겠나이다.” 하였더라.

32 ¶ And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.

33 그러자 사울이 다윗에게 말하기를, “너는 이 필리스티아인을 대적하여 그와 싸우러 갈 수 없노라. 이는 네가 어린 청년에 불과하지만 그는 그의 어린 시절부터 전사이기 때문이라.” 하였더라.

33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.

34 이에 다윗이 사울에게 이같이 말하였더라. “당신의 종이 자기 아버지의 양들을 지켰는데, 사자와 곰이 와서 양 떼에서 어린양을 잡아갔었나이다.

34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:

35 그리하면 제가 그를 따라 나가 그를 쳐서 그의 입에서 그것을 구출하였나이다. 그리고 그가 저를 대적하여 일어날 때면 제가 그의 수염으로 그를 잡아서 그를 치고 그를 살해하였나이다.

35 And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.

36 당신의 종이 사자와 곰 둘 다를 잡아죽였나이다. 그런즉 이 할례받지 아니한 필리스티아인도, 그가 살아 계신 하나님의 군사들에 싸움을 걸었으니, 그것들 중 하나와 같이 되리이다.”

36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.

37 다윗이 이에 덧붙여 말하기를, “저를 사자의 발과 곰의 발에서 구해 내신 주, 그분께서 저를 이 필리스티아인의 손에서 구해 내실 것이니이다.” 하였더라. 그러자 사울이 다윗에게 말하기를, “가라. 그리고 주께서 너와 함께 계시기를 바라노라.” 하였더라.

37 David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.

38 ¶ 그런 다음에 사울이 다윗을 자신의 갑옷으로 무장시켰고, 그가 그의 머리 위에 놋으로 된 투구를 씌웠더라. 또한 그가 그를 미늘갑옷으로 무장시켰더라.

38 ¶ And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail.

39 그리하여 다윗이 그의 칼을 그의 갑옷 위에 찼으니, 그가 걸어 다녀 보았더라. 이는 그가 그것을 입증해 보지 아니하였기 때문이라. 그러고 나서 다윗이 사울에게 말하기를, “저는 이것들을 착용하고 갈 수 없나이다. 이는 제가 그것들을 입증해 본 적이 없기 때문이니이다.” 하였더라. 그리하여 다윗이 그것들을 자신의 몸에서 벗겨 냈더라.

39 And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.

40 그런 다음에 그가 자기 손에 자신의 지팡이를 들고 시내에서 다섯 개의 매끈한 돌들을 자신을 위해 선택했으니, 그것들을 자신이 지닌 목자의 가방 안에, 곧 짐 보따리 안에 넣었더라. 그런즉 그의 무릿매가 그의 손에 있었더라. 그런 다음에 그가 그 필리스티아인에게 가까이 다가갔더라.

40 And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.

41 그러자 그 필리스티아인이 나와서 다윗에게로 가까이 다가왔는데 방패를 든 사람이 그의 앞에서 갔더라.

41 And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him.

42 그리하여 그 필리스티아인이 주변을 둘러 보고서 다윗을 보자 그가 그를 깔보았더라. 이는 그가 어린 청년에 불과하며 불그스름하고 용모가 수려하였기 때문이라.

42 And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.

43 그런즉 그 필리스티아인이 다윗에게 말하기를, “내가 개이기에 네가 지팡이들을 가지고 나에게 오느냐?” 하였더라. 그러면서 그 필리스티아인이 자신의 신들을 통하여 다윗을 저주하였더라.

43 And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.

44 이어서 그 필리스티아인이 다윗에게 말하기를, “내게로 오라. 그리하면 내가 너의 살을 공중의 날짐승들과 들판의 짐승들에게 주겠노라.” 하였더라.

44 And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.

45 그때 다윗이 그 필리스티아인에게 이같이 말하였더라. “너는 칼과 창과 방패를 가지고 나에게 오는도다. 그러나 나는 네가 싸움을 건, 만군의 주, 곧 이스라엘 군사들의 하나님의 이름으로 너에게 가는도다.

45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.

46 이날 주께서 나의 손안에 너를 넘기실 것이라. 그리하면 나는 너를 칠 것이요, 너에게서 너의 머리를 취하겠노라. 그리고 내가 이날 필리스티아인들 군대의 사체들을 공중의 날짐승들과 땅의 야생 짐승들에게 주겠노라. 이는 온 땅으로 하여금 이스라엘에 한 하나님께서 계시는 것을 알게 하려 함이라.

46 This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.

47 그리하여 이 집회 전체는 주께서 칼과 창으로 구원하시는 것이 아님을 알리라. 이는 전투가 주의 것이므로 그분께서 너희를 우리의 손안에 주실 것이기 때문이라.”

47 And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD'S, and he will give you into our hands.

48 이후에 그 필리스티아인이 일어나서 나아와 다윗을 맞으러 가까이 다가오자 이러한 일이 있었으니, 다윗이 그 필리스티아인을 맞으러 군사 쪽으로 서둘러 달려갔더라.

48 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.

49 그러면서 다윗이 자기 손을 자신의 가방 안에 집어넣어 거기서 돌 하나를 집고 그것을 무릿매로 던져 그 필리스티아인의 이마를 쳤더니, 그 돌이 그의 이마 속에 박혔더라. 그리하여 그가 땅에 자기 얼굴을 박고 쓰러졌더라.

49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.

50 그렇게 하여 다윗이 무릿매와 돌로 그 필리스티아인에게 승리하였고, 그 필리스티아인을 쳤으며, 그를 살해하였더라. 그러나 다윗의 손에는 어떤 칼도 없었더라.

50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.

51 그러므로 다윗이 달려가 그 필리스티아인 위에 서서 그의 칼을 취하여 그것을 그 칼집에서 빼 들고 그를 살해한 다음 그것으로 그의 머리를 베어 냈더라. 그런즉 필리스티아인들이 그들의 투사가 죽은 것을 보자 그들이 도망하였더라.

51 Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.

52 그러자 이스라엘과 유다 사람들이 일어나 함성을 지르며 필리스티아인들을 추격하였으니, 네가 골짜기와 에크론의 성문들에 이르는 곳까지더라. 그리하여 필리스티아인들의 부상자들이 샤아라임으로 가는 길, 곧 가드와 에크론에 이르는 길에서 쓰러졌더라.

52 And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron.

53 그런 다음에 이스라엘 자녀들이 필리스티아인들을 뒤쫓다가 되돌아왔으니, 그들이 저들의 천막들을 약탈하였더라.

53 And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their tents.

54 그리고 다윗이 그 필리스티아인의 머리를 취하여 그것을 예루살렘으로 가져왔으나 그의 갑옷은 그가 자기 천막 안에 두었더라.

54 And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent.

55 ¶ 그런즉 다윗이 그 필리스티아인을 대적하여 나아가는 것을 사울이 보았을 때 그가 군대 대장인 아브넬에게 말하기를, “이 어린 청년이 누구의 아들이냐?” 하였더라. 그러자 아브넬이 말하기를, “당신의 혼이 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하오니, 오, 왕이여, 제가 알 수 없나이다.” 하였더라.

55 ¶ And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.

56 그러자 왕이 말하기를, “너는 그 젊은 청년이 누구의 아들인지 물어보라.” 하였더라.

56 And the king said, Enquire thou whose son the stripling is.

57 이에 다윗이 그 필리스티아인을 살육하는 것을 마치고 되돌아오자 아브넬이 그를 데려갔으니, 다윗의 손에 그 필리스티아인의 머리가 들려 있는 채로 그를 사울 앞으로 인도하였더라.

57 And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.

58 그러자 사울이 그에게 말하기를, “너, 청년아, 네가 누구의 아들이냐?” 하였더라. 이에 다윗이 대답하기를, “저는 당신의 종, 베들레헴족 이새의 아들이니이다.” 하였더라.

58 And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.
