창세기 44장

1 그런 다음에 그가 자기 집 청지기에게 명령하며 말하였더라. “그 사람들이 옮길 수 있는 최대치의 양식으로 그 남자들의 자루들을 채우고 각인의 돈을 그의 자루의 어귀에 넣으라.

1 And he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men's sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man's money in his sack's mouth.

2 그리고 막내의 자루 어귀에 내 잔, 곧 은잔과 그의 곡식 대금을 넣으라.” 그런즉 그가 요셉이 이른 그 말대로 행하였더라.

2 And put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack's mouth of the youngest, and his corn money. And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken.

3 아침 햇살이 비치자마자 그 남자들, 곧 그들과 그들의 나귀들이 전송을 받았더라.

3 As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses.

4 그리고 그들이 그 도시에서 아직 멀리 떠나지 않았을 때 요셉이 자기 청지기에게 말하였더라. “일어나서 그 남자들을 따라가라. 그런 다음에 네가 그들을 따라잡을 때면 그들에게 이같이 말하라. ‘어찌 너희가 선을 악으로 갚느냐?

4 And when they were gone out of the city, and not yet far off, Joseph said unto his steward, Up, follow after the men; and when thou dost overtake them, say unto them, Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good?

5 이것은 내 주께서 그것으로 마시며 그가 정녕 점치는 데 쓰는 것이 아니냐? 너희가 그렇게 함으로써 악을 행하였도다.’”

5 Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing.

6 ¶ 그리하여 그가 그들을 따라잡았으니, 그가 그들에게 이와 같은 말들을 일렀더라.

6 ¶ And he overtook them, and he spake unto them these same words.

7 이에 그들이 그에게 이같이 말하였더라. “어찌 내 주께서 이런 말씀들을 하시나이까? 당신의 종들이 이런 일을 따라 행하는 것을 하나님께서 금하시기를 바라나이다.

7 And they said unto him, Wherefore saith my lord these words? God forbid that thy servants should do according to this thing:

8 보소서, 저희 자루들의 어귀들에서 저희가 발견하였던 돈을 저희가 가나안 지역에서 당신께로 다시 가져왔나이다. 그럴진대 어찌 저희가 당신의 소유주의 집에서 은이나 금을 도둑질하겠나이까?

8 Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks' mouths, we brought again unto thee out of the land of Canaan: how then should we steal out of thy lord's house silver or gold?

9 당신의 종들 중 누구에게서 그것이 발견되든지 그가 죽을 것이요, 또한 저희 역시 내 주의 노예들이 되겠나이다.”

9 With whomsoever of thy servants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be my lord's bondmen.

10 그러자 그가 말하기를, “이제 그것 또한 너희의 말들대로 되리라. 그것이 발견되는 자는 내 종이 되리라. 그리하면 너희는 비난받을 일이 없으리라.” 하였더라.

10 And he said, Now also let it be according unto your words: he with whom it is found shall be my servant; and ye shall be blameless.

11 그때 그들 각인이 신속하게 자기 자루를 땅바닥에 내려놓았고 모든 사람마다 자기 자루를 열었더라.

11 Then they speedily took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack.

12 그리하여 그가 수색하였는데 가장 연장자부터 시작하여 가장 어린 자에서 마쳤더라. 그리고 그 잔은 베냐민의 자루에서 발견되었더라.

12 And he searched, and began at the eldest, and left at the youngest: and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack.

13 이에 그들이 자신들의 옷을 찢었으니, 각인이 자기 나귀에 자루를 싣고 그 도시로 되돌아왔더라.

13 Then they rent their clothes, and laded every man his ass, and returned to the city.

14 ¶ 그러자 유다와 그의 형제들이 요셉의 집으로 왔으니, 그가 아직 거기에 있었기 때문이라. 그리고 그들은 그의 앞에서 땅바닥에 엎드렸더라.

14 ¶ And Judah and his brethren came to Joseph's house; for he was yet there: and they fell before him on the ground.

15 이에 요셉이 그들에게 말하기를, “너희가 행한 이것은 무슨 행동이냐? 나와 같이 이러한 사람은 필히 점칠 수 있다는 것을 너희가 몰랐느냐?” 하였더라.

15 And Joseph said unto them, What deed is this that ye have done? wot ye not that such a man as I can certainly divine?

16 그러자 유다가 말하기를, “저희가 나의 주께 무엇을 말하리이까? 저희가 무엇을 고하리이까? 또는 어떻게 저희가 저희의 혐의를 벗겠나이까? 하나님께서 당신의 종들의 죄악을 발견하셨나이다. 보소서, 저희는 내 주의 종들이오니, 저희와 그 잔이 함께 발견된 자 역시 모두 그러하나이다.” 하였더라.

16 And Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord's servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.

17 그런데 그가 말하기를, “내가 그렇게 하는 것을 하나님께서 금하시기를 바라노라. 오직 그 잔이 그의 수중에서 발견된 그 남자, 그가 나의 종이 되리라. 그리고 너희로 말하자면, 너희는 너희 아버지께로 평안 가운데 올라가라.” 하였더라.

17 And he said, God forbid that I should do so: but the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, get you up in peace unto your father.

18 ¶ 그때 유다가 그에게 가까이 나아와 이같이 말하였더라. “오, 나의 주여, 제가 당신께 간구하오니, 내 주의 두 귀에 당신의 종이 한 말씀 고하는 것을 허락하소서. 그리고 당신의 분노가 당신의 종을 대적하여 타오르지 않게 하소서. 이는 당신이 바로 파라오와 같기 때문이옵니다.

18 ¶ Then Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord's ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Pharaoh.

19 나의 주께서 그의 종들에게 물으며 말씀하시기를, ‘너희에게 아버지나 형제가 있느냐?’ 하셨나이다.

19 My lord asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father, or a brother?

20 그리하여 저희가 나의 주께 말씀드리기를, ‘저희에게 노인인 아버지가 있고, 그의 노년에 얻은 자식, 곧 어린것이 있나이다. 그런데 그의 형제는 죽었고 그의 어머니에게서 난 자로는 그만 홀로 남아 있어 그의 아버지가 그를 사랑하나이다.’ 하였나이다.

20 And we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him.

21 그러자 당신께서 당신의 종들에게 말씀하시기를, ‘내가 내 두 눈으로 그를 확인할 수 있도록 그를 나에게로 데리고 내려오라.’ 하셨나이다.

21 And thou saidst unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, that I may set mine eyes upon him.

22 이에 저희가 나의 주께 말씀드리기를, ‘그 소년은 자기 아버지를 떠날 수 없나이다. 이는 만일 그가 그의 아버지를 떠난다면 그의 아버지는 죽을 것이기 때문이옵니다.’ 하였나이다.

22 And we said unto my lord, The lad cannot leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die.

23 그러자 당신께서 당신의 종들에게 말씀하시기를, ‘너희 막냇동생이 너희와 함께 내려오지 아니한다면 너희는 더 이상 나의 얼굴을 보지 못하리라.’ 하셨나이다.

23 And thou saidst unto thy servants, Except your youngest brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more.

24 그런데 저희가 당신의 종인 제 아버지에게 올라갔을 때 이러한 일이 있었으니, 저희가 내 주의 말씀들을 그에게 알렸나이다.

24 And it came to pass when we came up unto thy servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.

25 그러자 저희 아버지가 말하기를, ‘다시 가서 우리에게 양식을 좀 사 오라.’ 하였나이다.

25 And our father said, Go again, and buy us a little food.

26 그리하여 저희가 말하기를, ‘저희가 내려갈 수 없나이다. 만일 저희의 막냇동생이 저희와 함께한다면, 그때는 저희가 내려가겠나이다. 이는 저희의 막냇동생이 저희와 함께하지 아니한다면 저희가 그 남자의 얼굴을 볼 수 없기 때문이옵니다.’ 하였나이다.

26 And we said, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man's face, except our youngest brother be with us.

27 그러자 당신의 종인 제 아버지가 저희에게 이같이 말하였나이다. ‘너희가 알다시피 내 아내가 나에게 두 아들들을 낳아 주었노라.

27 And thy servant my father said unto us, Ye know that my wife bare me two sons:

28 그런데 한 명은 나에게서 떠나갔기에 내가 말하기를, ‘그가 갈기갈기 찢겨진 것이 확실하도다.’ 하였노라. 그러고 나서 그 이후로 나는 그를 보지 못하였노라.

28 And the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I saw him not since:

29 그런데 만일 너희가 이 아이마저 나에게서 빼앗고 그에게 위해가 가해진다면 너희는 나의 백발들을 슬픔과 함께 음부로 끌고 내려가리라.’

29 And if ye take this also from me, and mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.

30 그러므로 이제 그의 생명이 그 소년의 생명에 묶여 있는 것으로 보아 제가 당신의 종인 제 아버지에게 갈 때 그 소년이 저희와 함께하지 아니한다면

30 Now therefore when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad be not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the lad's life;

31 이러한 일이 있으리니, 그 소년이 저희와 함께하지 아니함을 그가 볼 때 그는 죽고 말 것이옵니다. 그리하면 당신의 종들은 슬픔과 함께 당신의 종인 저희 아버지의 백발들을 음부로 끌고 내려가리이다.

31 It shall come to pass, when he seeth that the lad is not with us, that he will die: and thy servants shall bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave.

32 이는 당신의 종이 제 아버지에게 그 소년을 위한 보증인이 되며 말하기를, ‘만일 제가 그를 당신께 데려오지 않는다면 그때는 제가 나의 아버지께 그 비난을 영원토록 감당하리이다.’ 하였기 때문이옵니다.

32 For thy servant became surety for the lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, then I shall bear the blame to my father for ever.

33 그러므로 이제 제가 당신께 간구하오니, 당신의 종이 그 소년 대신에 나의 주께 노예로 거하도록 허락하소서. 그리고 그 소년으로 하여금 그의 형제들과 함께 올라가게 하소서.

33 Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren.

34 그 소년이 저와 함께하지 아니하는데 어떻게 제가 제 아버지에게 올라가겠나이까? 혹시라도 제 아버지에게 임할 악을 제가 보지 않을까 우려하나이다.”

34 For how shall I go up to my father, and the lad be not with me? lest peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father.
