1 그리고 아르타크세르크세스왕 제이십년 니산 월에 이러한 일이 있었으니, 포도즙이 그의 앞에 있었더라. 그런즉 내가 포도즙을 집어 들고 그것을 왕에게 주었더라. 이제 내가 전에는 그의 면전에서 슬퍼한 적이 없었더라.
1 And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence.
2 이러한 이유로 왕이 나에게 말하기를, “네가 병든 것이 아니거늘, 어찌하여 너의 안색이 슬픈 것이냐? 이것은 다름 아닌 마음의 슬픔이로다.” 하였더라. 그때 내가 매우 심히 무서워하며
2 Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid,
3 왕에게 말하기를, “왕께서는 영원토록 사소서. 저의 조상들의 돌무덤들의 장소인 그 도시가 황폐하고 그곳의 성문들이 불에 소멸되어 있는 때에 어찌하여 제 안색이 슬프지 아니하겠나이까?” 하였더라.
3 And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?
4 그때 왕이 나에게 말하기를, “그런즉 너는 무엇을 요청하느냐?” 하였더라. 그러므로 내가 하늘의 하나님께 기도하였더라.
4 Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.
5 그러고 나서 내가 왕에게 말하기를, “만일 그것이 왕을 기쁘게 해 드린다면, 혹 당신의 종이 당신의 목전에서 호의를 발견하였다면 당신께서 저를 유다로, 곧 저의 조상들의 돌무덤들의 도시로 보내시어 그곳을 건설하게 하여 주소서.” 하였더라.
5 And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers' sepulchres, that I may build it.
6 그러자 왕이 나에게 말하기를, (그의 곁에는 왕비도 앉아 있었으니,) “그렇다면 너의 여정이 얼마나 오래 걸리겠느냐? 또 네가 언제 되돌아오겠느냐?” 하였더라. 그렇게 하여 나를 보내는 것이 왕을 기쁘게 하였기에 내가 그에게 때를 정해 주었더라.
6 And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.
7 이뿐만 아니라 나는 왕에게 이같이 말하였더라. “만일 그것이 왕을 기쁘게 해 드린다면, 강 너머의 총독들에게 줄 칙서들이 제게 주어지게 하시어 그들이 제가 유다에 이를 때까지 저를 전송하게 하소서.
7 Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah;
8 그리고 왕의 숲을 관리하는 자인 아삽에게 칙서가 주어지게 하시어 그로 하여금 그 집에 속하는 궁전의 대문들과, 도시의 성벽과, 제가 들어갈 집을 위한 들보들을 만들 재목을 저에게 주게 하소서.” 그러자 내 위에 임한 나의 하나님의 선한 손에 따라 왕이 나에게 승인해 주었더라.
8 And a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.
9 ¶ 그때 내가 강 너머의 총독들에게 이르러 왕의 칙서들을 그들에게 주었더라. 이때 왕은 군사 대장들과 기병들을 나와 함께 보냈었더라.
9 ¶ Then I came to the governors beyond the river, and gave them the king's letters. Now the king had sent captains of the army and horsemen with me.
10 호론족 산발랏과 암몬족인 종 토비야가 그것에 관하여 들었을 때, 이스라엘 자녀들의 번창을 추구하는 사람이 온 것이 그들을 지극히 비통하게 하였더라.
10 When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly that there was come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.
11 그렇게 하여 내가 예루살렘으로 왔고 거기서 삼 일 동안 있었더라.
11 So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.
12 ¶ 그러다가 내가 밤중에 일어났으니, 나와 내 곁에 있는 몇몇 소수의 사람들이 그리하였더라. 또한 나는 나의 하나님께서 예루살렘에서 행하라고 내 마음속에 넣어 주신 것을 어떤 사람에게도 알리지 아니하였더라. 또한 내가 타고 있던 짐승을 제외하고는 내 곁에 어떤 짐승도 없었더라.
12 ¶ And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem: neither was there any beast with me, save the beast that I rode upon.
13 그리고 나는 밤에 골짜기문을 통하여, 곧 용 우물 앞에서 나갔고 배설물 배출구에 이르러 예루살렘 성벽들을 시찰하였더니, 그것들이 무너져 내렸고 그곳의 성문들은 불에 소멸되었더라.
13 And I went out by night by the gate of the valley, even before the dragon well, and to the dung port, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and the gates thereof were consumed with fire.
14 그때 내가 샘문으로 계속 갔고 왕의 못으로 향하였더라. 그러나 나의 아래에 있었던 짐승이 지나갈 틈이 없었더라.
14 Then I went on to the gate of the fountain, and to the king's pool: but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass.
15 그때 내가 밤중에 시내를 통하여 올라갔고 성벽을 시찰하였다가 뒤로 돌이켜 골짜기문으로 들어왔으니, 이와 같이 되돌아왔더라.
15 Then went I up in the night by the brook, and viewed the wall, and turned back, and entered by the gate of the valley, and so returned.
16 그런데 치리자들은 내가 어디로 갔는지, 또는 내가 무엇을 행하였는지 몰랐더라. 또한 나는 유대인들에게도, 제사장들에게도, 귀족들에게도, 치리자들에게도, 공사를 한 나머지 사람들에게도 아직 그것을 알린 적이 없었더라.
16 And the rulers knew not whither I went, or what I did; neither had I as yet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest that did the work.
17 ¶ 그 뒤에 내가 그들에게 말하기를, “우리가 처한 괴로움을 너희가 보나니, 예루살렘이 황폐하고 그곳의 성문들이 불에 탄 것이라. 오라, 그리하여 우리가 더 이상 어떤 치욕도 되지 않도록 예루살렘 성벽을 우리가 세워 올리자.” 하였더라.
17 ¶ Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.
18 그때 내가 내 위에 선하게 임하신 나의 하나님의 손을 그들에게 알리며, 왕이 나에게 전한 그의 말들도 그대로 알렸더라. 그러자 그들이 말하기를, “우리가 일어나 건축하자.” 하였더라. 그렇게 하여 그들이 이 선한 일을 위하여 자신들의 손을 강화하였더라.
18 Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king's words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.
19 그러나 호론족 산발랏과 암몬족 종 토비야와 아라비아인 게솀이 그것을 들었을 때 그들은 우리를 경멸하여 비웃었고 우리를 멸시하며 말하기를, “너희가 행하는 이것이 무엇이냐? 너희가 왕을 대적하여 반역하려 하느냐?” 하였더라.
19 But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king?
20 그때 내가 그들에게 대답하였으니 그들에게 말하기를, “하늘의 하나님, 그분께서 우리를 번영하게 하시리라. 그러므로 그분의 종들인 우리는 일어나서 건축하겠노라. 그러나 너희는 예루살렘에서 아무 몫도, 권리도, 기념도 없도다.” 하였더라.
20 Then answered I them, and said unto them, The God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build: but ye have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.
