1 이제 아하수에루스의 날들에 이러한 일이 있었으니, (이 사람은 인도부터 에티오피아에 이르기까지 일백이십칠 개의 지방들을 통치한 아하수에루스니라.)
1 Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus, (this is Ahasuerus which reigned, from India even unto Ethiopia, over an hundred and seven and twenty provinces:)
2 그 당시 아하수에루스왕이 슈샨궁 안에 있던 그의 왕국의 보좌 위에 앉았던 때인
2 That in those days, when the king Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom, which was in Shushan the palace,
3 그의 통치 제삼년에 그가 그의 모든 통치자들과 그의 종들에게 잔치를 열었더라. 페르시아와 메디아의 권세와 귀족들과 속주들의 통치자들이 그의 앞에 있더라.
3 In the third year of his reign, he made a feast unto all his princes and his servants; the power of Persia and Media, the nobles and princes of the provinces, being before him:
4 그는 그의 영광스러운 왕국의 재물들과 그의 탁월한 존엄의 영예를 여러 날들 동안, 곧 일백팔십 일 동안 내보였더라.
4 When he shewed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the honour of his excellent majesty many days, even an hundred and fourscore days.
5 그리고 이 날들이 다 찼을 때 왕이 큰 자, 작은 자 할 것 없이 슈샨궁에 참석해 있던 모든 백성에게 왕의 궁전의 정원 뜰에서 잔치를 칠 일 동안 열어 주었더라.
5 And when these days were expired, the king made a feast unto all the people that were present in Shushan the palace, both unto great and small, seven days, in the court of the garden of the king's palace;
6 그곳에는 백색과 녹색과 청색의 거는 천들이 있었는데 은 고리들과 대리석 기둥들에 고운 아마와 자주색 끈들로 고정되어 있었더라. 침상들은 금과 은으로 되어 있고, 홍색과 청색과 백색과 흑색과 대리석으로 포장된 길 위에 있었더라.
6 Where were white, green, and blue, hangings, fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and pillars of marble: the beds were of gold and silver, upon a pavement of red, and blue, and white, and black, marble.
7 그리고 그들이 저들에게 금으로 된 그릇들 안에 음료를 주었으니, (서로 다른 다양한 그릇들이며) 왕실 포도즙을 왕의 형편에 따라 넘치게 주었더라.
7 And they gave them drink in vessels of gold, (the vessels being diverse one from another,) and royal wine in abundance, according to the state of the king.
8 그리고 마시는 것도 법에 따라 이루어졌으니, 아무도 강제하지 아니하였더라. 이는 왕이 이처럼 그의 집의 모든 관원들에게 그들이 모두 저마다 임의대로 행할 것을 주문하였기 때문이더라.
8 And the drinking was according to the law; none did compel: for so the king had appointed to all the officers of his house, that they should do according to every man's pleasure.
9 또한 왕비 와슈티도 아하수에루스왕에게 속해 있었던 궁정에서 여자들을 위하여 잔치를 열었더라.
9 Also Vashti the queen made a feast for the women in the royal house which belonged to king Ahasuerus.
10 ¶ 일곱째 날에 왕의 마음이 포도즙으로 즐거워하였을 때 왕이 아하수에루스왕의 면전에서 섬기던 일곱 명의 시종장들인 므후만과 비즈다와 하르보나와 빅다와 아박다와 제달과 카르카스에게 명령하였으니,
10 ¶ On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, the seven chamberlains that served in the presence of Ahasuerus the king,
11 왕비의 관을 쓴 왕비 와슈티를 왕 앞으로 데려와서 백성과 통치자들에게 그녀의 아름다움을 보이게 하였더라. 이는 그녀가 보기에 어여뻤기 때문이라.
11 To bring Vashti the queen before the king with the crown royal, to shew the people and the princes her beauty: for she was fair to look on.
12 그러나 왕비 와슈티는 그의 시종장들을 통하여 전해진 왕의 명령에 따라서 오는 것을 거부하였더라. 그러므로 왕이 몹시 진노하였으니, 그의 분노가 그의 안에서 불탔더라.
12 But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king's commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him.
13 ¶ 그때 왕이 때들을 알았던 지혜로운 사람들에게 이같이 말하였더라. (이는 법과 공의를 아는 모든 자들을 향한 왕의 방식이 그러하였기 때문이라.
13 ¶ Then the king said to the wise men, which knew the times, (for so was the king's manner toward all that knew law and judgment:
14 그리고 그의 다음은 카르셰나, 셰달, 아드마다, 타르시시, 메레스, 마르스나, 므무칸, 이상 페르시아와 메디아의 일곱 통치자들이었으니, 그들은 왕의 얼굴을 보았고 왕국의 첫째 자리에 앉았더라.)
14 And the next unto him was Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, which saw the king's face, and which sat the first in the kingdom;)
15 “법에 따르면 우리가 왕비 와슈티에게 무엇을 해야 하겠느냐? 이는 그녀가 시종장들을 통하여 전한 아하수에루스왕의 명령을 수행하지 아니하였기 때문이라.”
15 What shall we do unto the queen Vashti according to law, because she hath not performed the commandment of the king Ahasuerus by the chamberlains?
16 그러자 므무칸이 왕과 통치자들 앞에서 대답하기를, “왕비 와슈티는 왕께만 잘못한 것이 아니라 모든 통치자들에게와 아하수에루스왕의 모든 속주들에 있는 온 백성에게도 그리한 것이니이다.
16 And Memucan answered before the king and the princes, Vashti the queen hath not done wrong to the king only, but also to all the princes, and to all the people that are in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus.
17 이는 왕비의 이 행실이 모든 여자들에게 널리 이를 것인즉 그것이 알려져서 ‘아하수에루스왕이 왕비 와슈티를 그의 앞으로 들어오도록 명령하였으나 그녀가 오지 아니하였도다.’ 하였을 때 그들이 그들의 남편들을 자신들의 눈으로 멸시할 것이기 때문이니이다.
17 For this deed of the queen shall come abroad unto all women, so that they shall despise their husbands in their eyes, when it shall be reported, The king Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she came not.
18 왕비의 행실에 관하여 들은, 페르시아와 메디아의 귀부인들까지 왕의 모든 통치자들에게 이날 이와 같이말할 것이니이다. 따라서 너무나 많은 업신여김과 진노가 일어날 것이니이다.
18 Likewise shall the ladies of Persia and Media say this day unto all the king's princes, which have heard of the deed of the queen. Thus shall there arise too much contempt and wrath.
19 만일 그것이 왕을 기쁘게 해 드린다면, 그로부터 왕실의 명령이 나가게 하시고, ‘와슈티는 더 이상 아하수에루스 왕 앞에 올 수 없다.’라는 것이 페르시아인들과 메데 사람들의 법들 가운데 기록되게 하시어 그것이 변경되지 못하게 하소서. 그리하여 왕께서 그녀의 왕비 신분을 그녀보다 더 나은 다른 이에게 주는 것을 허락하소서.
19 If it please the king, let there go a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more before king Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than she.
20 그리하면 왕께서 제정하실 왕의 칙령이 그분의 온 제국에 걸쳐 공표될 때 (이는 그것이 거대하기 때문이니,) 모든 아내들이 큰 자, 작은 자 할 것 없이 자신들의 남편들에게 존경을 표할 것이니이다.” 하였더라.
20 And when the king's decree which he shall make shall be published throughout all his empire, (for it is great,) all the wives shall give to their husbands honour, both to great and small.
21 그러자 그 말이 왕과 통치자들을 기쁘게 하였고 왕이 므무칸의 말대로 하였더라.
21 And the saying pleased the king and the princes; and the king did according to the word of Memucan:
22 이는 그가 왕의 모든 속주들로 편지들을 보냈기 때문이니, 모든 속주에 저마다 그곳의 글에 따라 보내고, 모든 백성에게 저마다 그들의 언어에 따라 보냈으니, “모든 남자마다 자기 자신의 집을 다스려야 하며, 그것이 각각의 모든 백성의 언어에 따라 공표되어야 하느니라.” 하였더라.
22 For he sent letters into all the king's provinces, into every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language, that every man should bear rule in his own house, and that it should be published according to the language of every people.
