1 모르드캐가 벌어진 모든 일을 알아차렸을 때, 모르드캐는 자신의 옷을 찢었고 굵은 베를 입고 재들을 뒤집어썼으며 도시의 중심부로 나가서 크고 통렬한 부르짖음으로 외쳤더라.
1 When Mordecai perceived all that was done, Mordecai rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and cried with a loud and a bitter cry;
2 그러면서 왕의 대문 앞까지 왔더라. 이는 아무도 굵은 베로 옷 입은 채로는 왕의 대문 안으로 진입할 수 없었기 때문이라.
2 And came even before the king's gate: for none might enter into the king's gate clothed with sackcloth.
3 그리고 왕의 명령과 그의 칙령이 이른 곳이 어디든지 모든 속주마다 유대인들 사이에서 엄청난 애곡과 금식과 울음과 통곡이 있었더라. 그리고 많은 이들이 굵은 베와 재들에 누웠더라.
3 And in every province, whithersoever the king's commandment and his decree came, there was great mourning among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.
4 ¶ 그렇기에 에스더의 시녀들과 그녀의 시종장들이 와서 그것을 그녀에게 알렸더라. 그때 왕비가 지극히 가슴 아파하였더라. 그리하여 그녀가 의상을 보내어 모르드캐를 옷 입히려 하였고 그의 굵은 베를 그에게서 벗기려 하였더라. 그러나 그가 그것을 받지 아니하였더라.
4 ¶ So Esther's maids and her chamberlains came and told it her. Then was the queen exceedingly grieved; and she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai, and to take away his sackcloth from him: but he received it not.
5 그때 에스더가 왕의 시종장들 중 한 명이자 그가 그녀를 받들도록 임명한 하탁을 불렀으며, 그에게 명령을 내려 모르드캐에게 이르러서 그것이 무슨 일이었으며, 그것이 왜 그러하였는지 알아보게 하였더라.
5 Then called Esther for Hatach, one of the king's chamberlains, whom he had appointed to attend upon her, and gave him a commandment to Mordecai, to know what it was, and why it was.
6 그렇게 하여 하탁이 그 도시의 거리에 있는 모르드캐에게로 나아갔으니, 그 거리는 왕의 대문 앞에 있었더라.
6 So Hatach went forth to Mordecai unto the street of the city, which was before the king's gate.
7 그리하여 모르드캐가 자신에게 벌어진 모든 것과 하만이 유대인들에 대하여 그들을 멸하려고 왕의 보물 창고들에 지불하기로 약속한 돈의 총액을 그에게 알렸더라.
7 And Mordecai told him of all that had happened unto him, and of the sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king's treasuries for the Jews, to destroy them.
8 또한 그가 그에게 그들을 멸하도록 슈샨에 전달된 칙령의 문서 사본을 주었고, 그것을 에스더에게 보이게 하고 그것을 그녀에게 분명하게 밝히게 하였으며, 그녀로 하여금 왕에게 들어가 그에게 간구하고 그녀의 백성을 위하여 그의 앞에서 요청할 것을 그녀에게 당부하게 하였더라.
8 Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given at Shushan to destroy them, to shew it unto Esther, and to declare it unto her, and to charge her that she should go in unto the king, to make supplication unto him, and to make request before him for her people.
9 그러자 하탁이 와서 모르드캐의 말들을 에스더에게 알렸더라.
9 And Hatach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai.
10 ¶ 다시금 에스더가 하탁에게 이야기하였고 그에게 명령을 내려 모르드캐에게 이같이 전하였더라.
10 ¶ Again Esther spake unto Hatach, and gave him commandment unto Mordecai;
11 “왕의 모든 종들과 왕의 속주들의 백성이 아는 바는 남자나 여자나 누가 되었든지 간에 부름받지 아니한 자가 안뜰에 들어가 왕에게 이르면, 그를 사형에 처하는 왕의 한 법이 있어 왕이 그에게 금 왕홀을 내미는 경우에만 그가 살 수 있나이다. 그러나 나는 지난 삼십 일 동안 왕에게 들어오라는 부름을 받지 못하였나이다.”
11 All the king's servants, and the people of the king's provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law of his to put him to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.
12 그러자 그들이 에스더의 말들을 모르드캐에게 알렸더라.
12 And they told to Mordecai Esther's words.
13 그때 모르드캐가 명령하여 에스더에게 회답하였더라. “당신은 왕의 집 안에서 모든 유대인들보다 더 잘 면할 것이라 스스로 생각하지 마소서.
13 Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther, Think not with thyself that thou shalt escape in the king's house, more than all the Jews.
14 이는 만일 당신이 이때에 전적으로 당신의 침묵을 지킨다면 그때는 유대인들의 방면과 구출이 다른 곳에서 일어날 것이기 때문이니이다. 그러나 당신과 당신의 아버지의 집은 멸망하리이다. 그런즉 당신이 이와 같은 때를 위해 왕국에 들어온 것인지 누가 알겠나이까?”
14 For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father's house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?
15 ¶ 그때 에스더가 그들에게 분부하여 모르드캐에게 이러한 답변을 회신하게 하였더라.
15 ¶ Then Esther bade them return Mordecai this answer,
16 “가서 슈샨 안에 있는 모든 유대인들을 함께 모으시고, 당신들은 나를 위하여 금식하며 삼 일 동안은 밤이나 낮에 먹지도 마시지도 마소서. 나 역시도 나의 시녀들과 함께 마찬가지로 금식하겠나이다. 그렇게 하고 나면 법에 어긋나도 내가 왕에게 들어가겠나이다. 그리하여 내가 죽으면 내가 죽으리이다.”
16 Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.
17 그렇게 하여 모르드캐가 그의 길을 갔고 에스더가 그에게 명령한 모든 것대로 행하였더라.
17 So Mordecai went his way, and did according to all that Esther had commanded him.
