1 이것들은 모세가 요르단 이편 광야 가운데서, 곧 파란과 토펠과 라반과 하제롯과 디자합 사이에 있는 홍해 맞은편 평야 가운데서 온 이스라엘에게 전한 말씀들이라.
1 These be the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this side Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red sea, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab.
2 (호렙으로부터 카데시바네아까지는 세일산의 길을 통하여 십일 일의 여정이라.)
2 (There are eleven days' journey from Horeb by the way of mount Seir unto Kadeshbarnea.)
3 그런즉 사십 년째 해, 열한째 달, 그달 일 일에 이러한 일이 있었으니, 주께서 이스라엘 자녀들을 향한 명령으로 모세에게 주신 모든 것에 따라 모세가 그들에게 이야기하였더라.
3 And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that the LORD had given him in commandment unto them;
4 이때는 그가 헤슈본에 거하였던 아모리족들의 왕 시혼과, 에드레이의 아스타롯에 거하였던 바샨 왕 옥을 살해한 뒤였더라.
4 After he had slain Sihon the king of the Amorites, which dwelt in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, which dwelt at Astaroth in Edrei:
5 모세가 요르단 강 이편 모압 지역 가운데서 이 율법을 선언하기 시작하며 이같이 말하였더라.
5 On this side Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to declare this law, saying,
6 “주 우리 하나님께서 호렙에서 우리에게 이같이 일러 말씀하셨느니라. ‘너희가 이 산속에서 충분히 오랫동안 지내 왔느니라.
6 The LORD our God spake unto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have dwelt long enough in this mount:
7 너희는 돌이켜 너희의 여정을 떠나 아모리족들의 산으로 가고 거기에서 가까운 모든 곳들로 가되, 평야와 언덕들과 계곡 가운데 가고, 남쪽과 해변가와 가나안족들의 지역과 레바논과 거대한 강인 유프라테스강까지 가라.
7 Turn you, and take your journey, and go to the mount of the Amorites, and unto all the places nigh thereunto, in the plain, in the hills, and in the vale, and in the south, and by the sea side, to the land of the Canaanites, and unto Lebanon, unto the great river, the river Euphrates.
8 보라, 내가 그 지역을 너희 앞에 두었노라. 들어가서 주가 너희 조상들인 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱에게 맹세하여 그들과 그들의 뒤를 잇는 그들의 씨에게 주기로 한 그 지역을 소유하라.’
8 Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after them.
9 ¶ 그런즉 그때에 내가 너희에게 이같이 일러 말하였느니라. ‘나는 너희를 나 혼자 감당할 수 없노라.
9 ¶ And I spake unto you at that time, saying, I am not able to bear you myself alone:
10 주 너희 하나님께서 너희를 번성하게 하셨으니, 보라, 이날 너희가 하늘의 별들과 같이 허다하도다.
10 The LORD your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.
11 (너희 조상들의 주 하나님께서 너희를 지금의 너희보다 일천 배나 더 많게 하시며, 그분께서 너희에게 약속하신 대로 너희에게 복을 주시기를 기원하노라!)
11 (The LORD God of your fathers make you a thousand times so many more as ye are, and bless you, as he hath promised you!)
12 어떻게 나 자신이 홀로 너희의 골칫거리와 너희의 짐과 너희의 분쟁을 감당할 수 있겠느냐?
12 How can I myself alone bear your cumbrance, and your burden, and your strife?
13 너희는 너희 지파들 사이에서 알려진 지혜롭고 명철한 남자들을 고르라. 그리하면 내가 그들로 하여금 너희를 다스리는 치리자들이 되게 하겠노라.’
13 Take you wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you.
14 그러자 너희가 나에게 대답하여 말하기를, ‘당신이 이야기하신 것이 우리가 행하기에 좋나이다.’ 하였도다.
14 And ye answered me, and said, The thing which thou hast spoken is good for us to do.
15 그렇게 하여 내가 너희 지파들의 우두머리, 곧 알려지고 지혜로운 남자들을 택하여 너희 위에 수장들로 삼았으니, 곧 천인대장들과 백인대장들과 오십인대장들과 십인대장들과 너희 지파들 사이에 있는 관원들이라.
15 So I took the chief of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over fifties, and captains over tens, and officers among your tribes.
16 그런 다음에 내가 그때에 너희의 판관들에게 이같이 명하며 말하였느니라. ‘너희의 형제들 사이에 있는 송사들을 들으라. 그런 다음에 각인과, 그의 형제와, 그와 함께하는 타국인 사이를 의롭게 재판하라.
16 And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him.
17 너희는 재판에서 외모들을 보지 말지니라. 다만 너희는 큰 자뿐 아니라 작은 자의 말도 들을지니라. 너희는 사람의 얼굴을 무서워하지 말지니라. 이는 재판이 하나님께 속하기 때문이라. 그리고 너희에게 너무 어려운 송사, 그것은 나에게로 가져오라. 그리하면 내가 그것을 듣겠노라.’
17 Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; but ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God's: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it.
18 그리하여 내가 그때에 너희가 행해야 하는 모든 것들을 너희에게 명령하였느니라.
18 And I commanded you at that time all the things which ye should do.
19 ¶ 그러고 나서 우리가 호렙에서 출발하였을 때 우리는 주 우리 하나님께서 우리에게 명령하신 대로 너희가 목격한 그 거대하고 공포스러운 광야를 아모리족들의 산길로 다 거쳐 갔느니라. 그런 다음에 우리가 카데시바네아에 왔느니라.
19 ¶ And when we departed from Horeb, we went through all that great and terrible wilderness, which ye saw by the way of the mountain of the Amorites, as the LORD our God commanded us; and we came to Kadeshbarnea.
20 그런 다음에 내가 너희에게 이같이 말하였느니라. ‘너희가 주 우리 하나님께서 우리에게 주시는 아모리족들의 산에 이르렀도다.
20 And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the mountain of the Amorites, which the LORD our God doth give unto us.
21 보라, 주 너의 하나님께서 이 지역을 네 앞에 두셨도다. 너의 조상들의 주 하나님께서 너에게 말씀하신 대로 올라가서 그 지역을 소유하라. 두려워하지 말고 낙심하지도 말라.’
21 Behold, the LORD thy God hath set the land before thee: go up and possess it, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged.
22 ¶ 그러자 너희가 나에게 가까이 나아왔으니, 곧 너희 각인이라. 그런즉 너희가 말하기를, ‘우리가 사람들을 우리 앞에 보내겠으니, 그들이 우리를 위하여 그 지역을 정찰한 다음, 어느 길로 우리가 올라가야만 하는지, 어느 도시들 안으로 우리가 들어갈지에 대해 우리에게 다시 기별을 가져오리이다.’ 하였느니라.
22 ¶ And ye came near unto me every one of you, and said, We will send men before us, and they shall search us out the land, and bring us word again by what way we must go up, and into what cities we shall come.
23 그러자 그 말을 한 것이 나를 매우 기쁘게 하였느니라. 그리하여 내가 한 지파당 한 명씩 너희 가운데 열두 명의 남자들을 골랐느니라.
23 And the saying pleased me well: and I took twelve men of you, one of a tribe:
24 그런즉 그들이 돌이켜서 그 산속으로 올라가 에슈콜 골짜기에 이르러 그곳을 정찰하였느니라.
24 And they turned and went up into the mountain, and came unto the valley of Eshcol, and searched it out.
25 그런 다음에 그들이 자신들의 손에 그 지역의 열매를 가지고 우리에게로 그것을 가지고 내려왔으며, 우리에게 다시 기별을 가져와 말하기를, ‘그곳은 주 우리 하나님께서 우리에게 주시는 좋은 지역이라.’ 하였느니라.
25 And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down unto us, and brought us word again, and said, It is a good land which the LORD our God doth give us.
26 그럼에도 불구하고 너희가 올라가려 하지 아니하였고, 오히려 주 너희 하나님의 명령을 거슬러 반역하였도다.
26 Notwithstanding ye would not go up, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God:
27 그러고 나서 너희가 너희의 천막들 안에서 불평하여 이같이 말하였느니라. ‘주께서 우리를 증오하신 까닭에, 그분께서 아모리족들의 손안에 우리를 넘기시어 우리를 멸하시려고 이집트 지역에서 우리를 데리고 나오셨도다.
27 And ye murmured in your tents, and said, Because the LORD hated us, he hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.
28 우리가 어디로 올라가야 할까? 우리 형제들이 우리의 마음을 낙심시키며 말하기를, ‘그 백성은 우리보다 강대하고 키가 크도다. 그 도시들은 거대하고 하늘까지 성벽으로 둘려 있도다. 그리고 이뿐만 아니라 우리가 거기서 아낙 족속들의 자손들을 보았노라.’ 하였도다.’
28 Whither shall we go up? our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying, The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there.
29 그때 내가 너희에게 이같이 말하였느니라. ‘겁내지 말고 그들을 무서워하지도 말라.
29 Then I said unto you, Dread not, neither be afraid of them.
30 이집트에서 너희의 눈앞에 그분께서 너희를 위하여 행하신 모든 것에 따라, 너희 앞에 가시는 주 너희 하나님, 그분께서는 너희를 위하여 싸우시리라.
30 The LORD your God which goeth before you, he shall fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes;
31 그리고 광야 가운데서도 주 너의 하나님께서 마치 남자가 그의 아들을 품듯이 너희를 품으신 것을 너희가 목격하였으니, 너희가 간 모든 길에서 너희가 이곳으로 들어오기까지 그리하셨느니라.’
31 And in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how that the LORD thy God bare thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came into this place.
32 그럼에도 이 점에 있어서 너희는 주 너희 하나님을 믿지 아니하였느니라.
32 Yet in this thing ye did not believe the LORD your God,
33 그분께서는 너희보다 앞장서서 길을 가시어 밤이면 불속에서 너희를 위하여 너희의 천막들을 칠 만한 장소를 탐색하셨으며, 낮이면 구름 속에서 너희가 가야 하는 길을 너희에게 보여 주셨도다.
33 Who went in the way before you, to search you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to shew you by what way ye should go, and in a cloud by day.
34 그런즉 주께서 너희 말들의 음성을 들으시고 진노하셨으니, 맹세하며 이같이 말씀하셨느니라.
34 And the LORD heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and sware, saying,
35 ‘이 악한 세대에 속한 이 사람들 중에서는 내가 너희 조상들에게 주기로 맹세하였던 그 좋은 지역을 볼 자가 결단코 한 명도 없으리라.
35 Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see that good land, which I sware to give unto your fathers,
36 단, 여푼네의 아들 칼렙은 예외니, 그는 그곳을 볼 것이라. 그런즉 그가 밟은 지역을 내가 그와 그의 자녀들에게 주겠노라. 이는 그가 주를 온전히 따랐기 때문이라.’
36 Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him will I give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath wholly followed the LORD.
37 또한 주께서는 너희로 인하여 나에게 분노하시며 이같이 말씀하셨느니라. ‘너도 거기로 들어가지 못하리라.
37 Also the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, saying, Thou also shalt not go in thither.
38 그러나 네 앞에 서 있는 눈의 아들 여호수아, 그는 거기로 들어가리라. 그에게 용기를 주라. 이는 그가 이스라엘로 하여금 그곳을 상속하게 할 것이기 때문이라.
38 But Joshua the son of Nun, which standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: encourage him: for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.
39 이뿐만 아니라 너희가 먹이가 될 것이라고 말했던 너희의 어린것들과, 그날에 선악 간에 지식이 없던 너희의 자녀들, 그들은 거기로 들어가리니, 내가 그들에게 그곳을 주겠으며, 그들은 그곳을 소유하리라.
39 Moreover your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it.
40 그러나 너희로 말하자면, 너희는 돌이켜 너희의 여정을 떠나 홍해 길을 통하여 광야 가운데로 들어가라.’
40 But as for you, turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.
41 그때 너희가 나에게 대답하여 이같이 말하기를, ‘우리가 주를 대적하여 죄를 지었나이다. 주 우리 하나님께서 우리에게 명령하신 모든 것대로 우리가 올라가서 싸우겠나이다.’ 하였느니라. 그러고 나서 너희 각인이 자신의 전쟁 무기를 찼으니, 너희는 언덕으로 올라가 들어갈 준비를 하였느니라.
41 Then ye answered and said unto me, We have sinned against the LORD, we will go up and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us. And when ye had girded on every man his weapons of war, ye were ready to go up into the hill.
42 그러자 주께서 나에게 말씀하시기를, ‘그들에게 ‘올라가지 말고 싸우지도 말라. 이는 내가 너희 가운데 있지 아니하기 때문이니, 너희가 너희의 원수들 앞에서 패할까 하노라.’하고 말하라.’ 하셨느니라.
42 And the LORD said unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies.
43 내가 너희에게 그와 같이 이야기하였으나 너희는 들으려 하지 않았고 오히려 주의 명령을 거슬러 반역하였으니, 주제넘게 언덕으로 올라가 들어갔느니라.
43 So I spake unto you; and ye would not hear, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD, and went presumptuously up into the hill.
44 그러자 그 산속에 거하던 아모리족들이 너희를 대적하여 나와 마치 벌떼가 추격하듯이 너희를 추격하였으니, 세일에서 호르마에 이르기까지 너희를 멸하였느니라.
44 And the Amorites, which dwelt in that mountain, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and destroyed you in Seir, even unto Hormah.
45 그러더니 너희가 되돌아와 주 앞에서 울었느니라. 그러나 주께서는 너희의 음성을 들으려 하지 아니하셨으며, 너희에게 귀를 열려고 하지도 아니하셨느니라.
45 And ye returned and wept before the LORD; but the LORD would not hearken to your voice, nor give ear unto you.
46 그렇게 하여 너희가 거기에 거한 날들에 따라 너희가 많은 날들을 카데시에 거하였느니라.
46 So ye abode in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that ye abode there.
