1 유다 왕 여호야킴의 통치 제삼년에 바빌론 왕 네부카드네자르가 예루살렘에 와서 그곳을 포위하였더라.
1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.
2 그리고 주께서 유다 왕 여호야킴을 그의 손안에 넘기셨으니, 하나님의 집의 기물들도 일부분을 넘기셨더라. 그가 그 기물들을 시날 지역에 있는 자기 신의 전당으로 옮겼더라. 그리고 그는 그 기물들을 자기 신의 보물고 안으로 들였더라.
2 And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.
3 ¶ 그리고 왕이 자기 내시들의 통솔자 아슈페나즈에게 말하였으니, 그가 이스라엘 자녀들과 왕의 씨와 통치자들 중 얼마를 데려와야 한다는 것이었더라.
3 ¶ And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king's seed, and of the princes;
4 곧, 그들 안에 흠이 없으나 잘생겼고 모든 지혜에 있어 정통하며 지식에 있어 정밀하고 과학을 이해하며, 그들 안에 왕의 궁전에 설 만한 기량을 가진 아이들이었으니, 그들이 칼데아인들의 학문과 방언을 그들에게 가르치려 함이라.
4 Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.
5 그리고 왕이 그들에게 왕의 음식과 자신이 마시던 포도주에서 매일의 음식물을 지정하여 주며 그처럼 삼년 동안 그들을 키웠으니, 그 끝에 그들로 하여금 왕 앞에 서게 하려 함이라.
5 And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king's meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.
6 이제 이들 가운데 유다 자녀들에 속하는 다니엘과 하나니야와 미샤엘과 아자리야가 있었더라.
6 Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
7 내시들의 대신이 그들에게 이름들을 주었더라. 이는 그가 다니엘에게 벨트샤잘이라는 이름을 주었고, 하나니야에게는 샤드락, 미샤엘에게는 메샥, 아자리야에게는 아벳느고라는 이름을 주었기 때문이라.
7 Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.
8 ¶ 그러나 다니엘은 왕의 음식의 몫이나 그가 마시던 포도주로 자기 자신을 더럽히지 않겠다고 그의 마음속에 결단하였더라. 그러므로 그는 자기 자신을 더럽히지 않겠다고 내시들의 대신에게 요청하였더라.
8 ¶ But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
9 이때 하나님께서 다니엘이 내시들의 대신에게 호의와 온화한 사랑을 얻도록 인도하셨더라.
9 Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.
10 그런즉 내시들의 대신이 다니엘에게 말하기를, “내가 내 주 왕을 두려워하노라. 왕이 너희의 음식과 너희의 음료를 지정하셨노라. 그런즉 어찌하여 너희 얼굴이 너희와 같은 계층의 아이들보다 못한 것을 왕께서 보셔야 하겠느냐? 그러면 너희는 나로 하여금 왕께 내 머리를 위태롭게 하게 할 것이라.” 하였더라.
10 And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.
11 그때 다니엘이 멜잘에게 이같이 말하였으니, 그는 내시들의 대신이 다니엘과 하나니야와 미샤엘과 아자리야를 감독하도록 세운 자더라.
11 Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
12 “제가 당신께 간청하오니, 당신의 종들을 십 일 동안 입증하소서. 그리하여 그들로 하여금 저희에게 콩류를 주어 먹게 하고 물을 주어 마시게 하소서.
12 Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.
13 그때 당신 앞에서 우리의 얼굴과, 왕의 음식의 몫을 먹는 아이들의 얼굴로 하여금 검사받게 하시어, 당신께서 보시는 대로 당신의 종들을 다루소서.”
13 Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king's meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.
14 그렇게 하여 그가 이 사안에 있어 그들에게 찬성하여 그들을 십 일 동안 입증하였더라.
14 So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.
15 그리고 십 일의 끝에 그들의 얼굴이 왕의 음식의 몫을 먹은 모든 아이들보다 더 수려하고 더 살이 오른 것이 나타났더라.
15 And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king's meat.
16 따라서 멜잘이 그들 몫의 음식과 그들이 마셔야 하는 포도주를 거두어 갔고 그들에게 콩류를 주었더라.
16 Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.
17 ¶ 이 네 명의 아이들로 말하자면, 하나님께서 그들에게 지식을 주셨고 모든 학문과 지혜에 정통함을 주셨더라. 그리고 다니엘은 모든 현시들과 꿈들을 이해하였더라.
17 ¶ As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
18 이제 그날들의 끝에 왕이 그로 하여금 그들을 데리고 들어오라고 말하였더라. 그때 내시들의 대신이 그들을 네부카드네자르 앞으로 데리고 들어왔더라.
18 Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.
19 그리하여 왕이 그들과 대화하였더라. 그런데 그들 모두 가운데서 다니엘과 하나니야와 미샤엘과 아자리야와 같은 자는 아무도 발견하지 못하였더라. 그러므로 그들이 왕 앞에 섰더라.
19 And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.
20 그리고 지혜와 명철에 관한 모든 사안들을 왕이 그들에게 문의하였고 그는 자신의 온 국토에 있는 모든 마술사들과 점성술사들보다 그들이 열 배나 더 낫다는 것을 발견하였더라.
20 And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.
21 그런즉 다니엘은 무려 키루스왕의 제일년까지 계속 있었더라.
21 And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.
