1 이런 일들이 있은 후에 아하수에루스왕의 진노가 가라앉았을 때 그가 와슈티를 기억하였으니, 그녀가 무엇을 행하였는지와 그녀를 대적하여 어떤 칙령이 내려졌는지를 기억하였더라.
1 After these things, when the wrath of king Ahasuerus was appeased, he remembered Vashti, and what she had done, and what was decreed against her.
2 그때 왕을 섬기던 그의 종들이 이같이 말하였더라. “왕을 위하여 어여쁘고 젊은 처녀들을 찾도록 허락하소서.
2 Then said the king's servants that ministered unto him, Let there be fair young virgins sought for the king:
3 그리고 왕께서는 그분의 왕국의 모든 속주들 안에서 관원들을 임명하시어 그들로 하여금 어여쁘고 젊은 처녀들을 모두 슈샨궁에 있는 여자들의 집으로 한데 모으게 하시고 궁녀들을 지키는 자인, 왕의 시종장 헤게의 관리에 두소서. 그리고 정화 의식을 위한 그들의 물자들이 그들에게 주어지게 하소서.
3 And let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom, that they may gather together all the fair young virgins unto Shushan the palace, to the house of the women, unto the custody of Hege the king's chamberlain, keeper of the women; and let their things for purification be given them:
4 그리하여 와슈티를 대신하여 왕을 기쁘게 하는 처자가 왕비가 되게 하소서.” 그러자 그 점이 왕을 기쁘게 하였고 그가 그렇게 행하였더라.
4 And let the maiden which pleaseth the king be queen instead of Vashti. And the thing pleased the king; and he did so.
5 ¶ 이때 슈샨궁에는 어떤 유대인 한 명이 있었는데 그의 이름은 모르드캐로, 베냐민족이며 키시의 자손이자 시므이의 자손인 야일의 아들이었더라.
5 ¶ Now in Shushan the palace there was a certain Jew, whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite;
6 그가 유다 왕 여코니야와 함께 잡혀갔던 포로들과 함께 예루살렘에서 잡혀갔었으니, 바빌론 왕 네부카드네자르가 잡아갔던 자라.
6 Who had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captivity which had been carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away.
7 그리고 그가 그의 삼촌의 딸인 하닷사, 즉 에스더를 길렀더라. 이는 그녀가 아버지도 없고 어머니도 없었기 때문이니, 그 처자가 어여쁘고 아름다웠더라. 모르드캐는 그녀의 아버지와 어머니가 죽었을 때 그녀를 데려다가 자기 자신의 딸로 삼았더라.
7 And he brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle's daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the maid was fair and beautiful; whom Mordecai, when her father and mother were dead, took for his own daughter.
8 ¶ 그렇게 하여 왕의 명령과 그의 칙령이 들렸을 때요, 많은 처자들이 슈샨궁으로 한데 모여 헤가이의 관리에 들어갔을 때 이러한 일이 있었으니, 에스더가 왕의 집으로도 인도되었고 궁녀들을 지키는 자인 헤가이의 관리에 들어갔더라.
8 ¶ So it came to pass, when the king's commandment and his decree was heard, and when many maidens were gathered together unto Shushan the palace, to the custody of Hegai, that Esther was brought also unto the king's house, to the custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.
9 그리고 그 처자가 그를 기쁘게 하였으니, 그녀가 그의 친절을 얻어 냈더라. 그런즉 그는 정화 의식을 위한 그녀의 물품들을 그녀에게 신속하게 주었으며 그녀에게 속해 있던 그러한 물품들과 함께 왕가로부터 주어지는 자격 있는 시녀들 일곱 명을 그녀에게 주었더라. 그리고 그는 그녀와 그녀의 시녀들을 궁녀들의 집에서 가장 좋은 위치에 우선 배치하였더라.
9 And the maiden pleased him, and she obtained kindness of him; and he speedily gave her her things for purification, with such things as belonged to her, and seven maidens, which were meet to be given her, out of the king's house: and he preferred her and her maids unto the best place of the house of the women.
10 에스더는 그녀의 백성도, 그녀의 종족도 알리지 아니하였더라. 이는 모르드캐가 그녀에게 명하여 그녀가 그것을 알려서는 안 된다고 하였기 때문이라.
10 Esther had not shewed her people nor her kindred: for Mordecai had charged her that she should not shew it.
11 그리고 모르드캐가 날마다 궁녀들의 집의 뜰 앞을 걸으며 에스더가 어떻게 하고 있는지, 또 그녀에게 무슨일이 생길지 알고자 하였더라.
11 And Mordecai walked every day before the court of the women's house, to know how Esther did, and what should become of her.
12 ¶ 이제 모든 처자마다 아하수에루스왕에게 들어가는 차례가 돌아왔을 때 그녀가 궁녀의 예법에 따라 열두 달을 지낸 후에 (이는 이처럼 그들의 정화 의식들의 날들이 찼기 때문이니, 정확히 하자면 몰약 기름으로 육 개월을, 향기로운 향품들과 궁녀의 정화 의식을 위한 다른 물품들로 육 개월을 정화하였더라.)
12 ¶ Now when every maid's turn was come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after that she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women, (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odours, and with other things for the purifying of the women;)
13 그때 모든 처자마다 왕에게 다음과 같이 나아갔더라. 궁녀들의 집에서 왕의 집으로 나갈 때 그녀가 희망하는 것은 무엇이나 자신 곁에 가지고 갈 수 있도록 그녀에게 주어졌더라.
13 Then thus came every maiden unto the king; whatsoever she desired was given her to go with her out of the house of the women unto the king's house.
14 저녁에 그녀가 가면 이튿날에 그녀가 궁녀들의 두 번째 집으로 되돌아가서 후궁들을 지키던 왕의 시종장 샤아슈가즈의 관리에 들어갔더라. 왕이 그녀를 크게 즐거워하여 그녀의 이름이 불리는 경우를 제외하면, 그녀는 더 이상 왕에게 들어갈 수 없었더라.
14 In the evening she went, and on the morrow she returned into the second house of the women, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king's chamberlain, which kept the concubines: she came in unto the king no more, except the king delighted in her, and that she were called by name.
15 ¶ 이제 왕에게 들어가는 에스더의 차례가 돌아왔으니, 그녀는 모르드캐의 삼촌 아비하일의 딸로서 모르드캐는 그녀를 자신의 딸로 삼았더라. 그녀는 궁녀들을 지키는 자인, 왕의 시종장 헤가이가 지정한 것 외에는 아무것도 요구하지 아니하였더라. 그리고 에스더가 그녀를 바라보던 모든 자들의 목전에 호의를 얻어 냈더라.
15 ¶ Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, was come to go in unto the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king's chamberlain, the keeper of the women, appointed. And Esther obtained favour in the sight of all them that looked upon her.
16 그렇게 하여 에스더가 아하수에루스왕에게 인계되어 그의 통치 일곱째 해 테벳 월인 열째 달에 그의 왕실의 집 안으로 들어갔더라.
16 So Esther was taken unto king Ahasuerus into his house royal in the tenth month, which is the month Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.
17 그리고 왕이 에스더를 모든 여자들보다 훨씬 사랑하였고 그녀가 그의 목전에서 모든 처녀들보다 더 은혜와 호의를 얻어 냈더라. 그렇게 하여 그가 그녀의 머리 위에 왕비의 관을 씌웠고 그녀를 와슈티 대신에 왕비로 삼았더라.
17 And the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.
18 그때 왕이 그의 모든 통치자들과 그의 종들에게 성대한 잔치를 마련하였으니, 곧 에스더의 잔치라. 그리고 그가 속주들에게 면제를 베풀었고 왕의 형편에 따라 선물들을 주었더라.
18 Then the king made a great feast unto all his princes and his servants, even Esther's feast; and he made a release to the provinces, and gave gifts, according to the state of the king.
19 그리고 처녀들이 두 번째 함께 모였던 그때 모르드캐가 왕의 대문 안에 앉았더라.
19 And when the virgins were gathered together the second time, then Mordecai sat in the king's gate.
20 에스더는 여전히 그녀의 친족도 그녀의 백성도 알리지 아니하였으니, 모르드캐가 그녀에게 명한 대로였더라. 이는 에스더가 모르드캐의 명령을 마치 그녀가 그의 곁에서 길러졌을 때처럼 실행하였기 때문이라.
20 Esther had not yet shewed her kindred nor her people; as Mordecai had charged her: for Esther did the commandment of Mordecai, like as when she was brought up with him.
21 ¶ 그 당시에 모르드캐가 왕의 대문 안에 앉아 있는 동안 문을 지키던 자들에 속하는, 왕의 시종장들 중 두 명인 빅단과 테레시가 격노하여 아하수에루스왕에게 손을 대려고 모색하였더라.
21 ¶ In those days, while Mordecai sat in the king's gate, two of the king's chamberlains, Bigthan and Teresh, of those which kept the door, were wroth, and sought to lay hand on the king Ahasuerus.
22 그런데 그것이 모르드캐에게 알려졌고, 모르드캐가 왕비 에스더에게 그것을 알렸더라. 그리하여 에스더는 그것에 관하여 왕에게 모르드캐의 이름으로 확실히 알렸더라.
22 And the thing was known to Mordecai, who told it unto Esther the queen; and Esther certified the king thereof in Mordecai's name.
23 그리고 그 사안에 관하여 조사가 이루어질 때 그것이 규명되었더라. 그러므로 그들 둘이 한 나무에 매달렸더라. 그리고 그것이 왕 앞에서 연대기들의 책 안에 기록되었더라.
23 And when inquisition was made of the matter, it was found out; therefore they were both hanged on a tree: and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king.
