1 이후에 아합이 엘리야가 행한 모든 것과 그가 모든 예언자들을 어떻게 칼로 살해하였는지 전부 이세벨에게 알렸더라.
1 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.
2 그때 이세벨이 한 전령을 엘리야에게 보내며 말하기를, “이처럼 만일 내가 내일 이 무렵에 너의 생명을 그들 중 한 명의 생명과 같이 만들지 않는다면, 신들이 나에게 벌을 내리시고 또한 더 내리실지어다.” 하였더라.
2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time.
3 그리고 그가 그것을 보았을 때, 그가 일어나서 그의 생명을 위하여 갔으니, 유다에 속해 있는 베르셰바로 와서 그의 종을 거기에 남겨 두었더라.
3 And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.
4 ¶ 그러나 그 자신은 하루의 여정으로 광야 가운데 들어가서 한 향나무 아래에 앉았더라. 그리고 그가 자신을 죽게 해 달라고 스스로 요청하였더라. 그러면서 말씀드리기를, “충분하나이다. 오, 주여, 이제 나의 생명을 앗아가 주시옵소서. 이는 제가 제 조상들보다 낫지 아니하기 때문이니이다.” 하였더라.
4 ¶ But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.
5 그러면서 그가 한 향나무 아래에 누워서 잠든 동안, 보라, 그때 한 천사가 그를 만지고 그에게 말하기를, “일어나서 먹으라.” 하였더라.
5 And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.
6 이에 그가 바라보았더니, 보라, 그의 머리맡에 숯불들 위에 구워진 둥글납작한 빵 하나와 물통 하나가 있었더라. 그리하여 그가 먹고 마신 후, 다시 자신의 몸을 뉘었더라.
6 And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.
7 이윽고 주의 천사가 두 번째 다시 와서 그를 만지며 말하기를, “일어나서 먹으라. 이는 여정이 너에게 너무 과중하기 때문이라.” 하였더라.
7 And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.
8 그리하여 그가 일어나 먹고 마셨으며, 그 음식의 힘으로 하나님의 산 호렙까지 사십 일 낮과 사십 일 밤을 갔더라.
8 And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.
9 ¶ 그런 다음에 그가 거기에 도착하여 한 동굴에 이르렀고 거기서 묵었더라. 그런데 보라, 주의 말씀이 그에게 임하였으니, 그분께서 그에게 말씀하시기를, “엘리야야, 너는 여기서 무엇을 하느냐?” 하셨느니라.
9 ¶ And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?
10 그러자 그가 말씀드리기를, “제가 만군의 주 하나님을 위하여 몹시 질투하였나이다. 이는 이스라엘 자녀들이 당신의 언약을 저버리고, 당신의 제단들을 엎어뜨리며, 당신의 예언자들을 칼로 살해하였기 때문이니이다. 그리하여 저, 바로 저만이 남겨졌나이다. 그리고 그들은 제 생명을 찾아서 그것을 앗아 가려고 하나이다.” 하였더라.
10 And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
11 이에 그분께서 말씀하시기를, “앞으로 가서 주 앞에 있는 산 위에 서라.” 하셨느니라. 그러자 보라, 주께서 옆으로 지나가셨고 엄청난 강풍이 주 앞에서 산들을 찢고 바위들을 조각조각 깨뜨렸더라. 그러나 주께서는 바람 속에 계시지 아니하셨더라. 그리고 바람이 있고 난 후에는 지진이 있었더라. 그러나 주께서는 지진 속에 계시지 아니하셨더라.
11 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake:
12 그리고 지진이 있은 후에는 불이 있었더라. 그러나 주께서는 불속에 계시지 아니하셨더라. 그리고 불이 있은 후에는 고요하고 미세한 음성이 있었더라.
12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
13 이윽고 엘리야가 그것을 들었을 때 이와 같은 일이 있었으니, 그가 자기 얼굴을 자기 덧옷으로 감싸고 나가서 동굴의 진입로에 섰더라. 그런데 보라, 거기에 한 음성이 그에게 임하며 말씀하시기를, “엘리야야, 너는 여기서 무엇을 하느냐?” 하셨느니라.
13 And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?
14 그러자 그가 말씀드리기를, “제가 만군의 주 하나님을 위하여 몹시 질투하였나이다. 이는 이스라엘 자녀들이 당신의 언약을 저버리고, 당신의 제단들을 엎어뜨리며, 당신의 예언자들을 칼로 살해하였기 때문이니이다. 그리하여 저, 바로 저만이 남겨졌나이다. 그리고 그들은 제 생명을 찾아서 그것을 앗아 가려고 하나이다.” 하였더라.
14 And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
15 이에 주께서 그에게 이같이 말씀하셨느니라. “가라. 다마스쿠스의 광야에 이르는 너의 길로 되돌아가라. 그리고 네가 올 때 하자엘에게 기름을 부어 시리아를 다스리는 왕이 되게 하라.
15 And the LORD said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria:
16 그리고 너는 님시의 아들 예후에게 기름을 부어 이스라엘을 다스리는 왕이 되게 하라. 그리고 너는 아벨므홀라 출신의 샤팟의 아들 엘리사에게 기름을 부어 너를 대신하여 예언자가 되게 하라.
16 And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.
17 그런즉 이러한 일이 있으리니, 하자엘의 칼을 면하는 자는 예후가 살해할 것이라. 또 예후의 칼을 면하는 자는 엘리사가 살해할 것이라.
17 And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.
18 그럼에도 내가 이스라엘 안에 나를 위하여 칠천 명을 남겨 두었나니, 곧 바알에게 꿇지 아니한 모든 무릎들과 그에게 저마다 입 맞추지 아니한 각각의 입이라.”
18 Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.
19 ¶ 그렇게 하여 그가 거기서 떠나 샤팟의 아들 엘리사를 발견하였으니, 엘리사가 자기 앞에서 열두 쌍의 소들로 밭을 갈고 있었으며 자신은 열두 번째 쌍과 함께 있었더라. 그런즉 엘리야가 그의 곁을 지나며 그의 덧옷을 그의 위에 던졌더라.
19 ¶ So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him.
20 그러자 그가 소들을 남겨 둔 채 엘리야를 따라 달려가며 말하기를, “제가 당신께 간구하오니, 저로 하여금 저의 아버지와 저의 어머니에게 입 맞추게 하소서. 그러고 난 다음에 제가 당신을 따르겠나이다.” 하였더라. 이에 그가 그에게 말하기를, “다시 돌아가라. 그런즉 내가 너에게 무엇을 하였느냐?” 하였더라.
20 And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again: for what have I done to thee?
21 그리하여 그가 그를 떠나 다시 되돌아가서 한 쌍의 소들을 취하여 그것들을 도살하였고, 소들에 쓰는 도구들로 그것들의 고기를 끓여서 백성에게 주었으니, 그들이 먹었더라. 그 후에 그가 일어나 엘리야를 따라갔고, 그를 섬겼더라.
21 And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.
