1 형제들아, (이는 내가 율법을 아는 자들에게 말하고 있기 때문이니,) 법이 사람이 살아있는 동안에만 그를 지배하는 것을 너희가 모르느냐?
1 Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?
2 이는 한 남편을 둔 여자는 그녀의 남편이 살아 있는 동안에 그에게 법으로 매여 있으나 만일 그 남편이 죽는다면 그녀는 자기 남편의 법에서 풀려나기 때문이라.
2 For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
3 그렇기에 만일 그녀가 그녀의 남편이 살아 있는 동안 또 다른 남자와 혼인하게 된다면 그녀는 간음하는 여인이라 불리리라. 그러나 만일 그녀의 남편이 죽는다면 그녀는 그 법으로부터 자유로우니라. 그렇기에 그녀가 또 다른 남자와 혼인하게 되더라도 그녀는 전혀 간음하는 여인이 되지 아니하느니라.
3 So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.
4 나의 형제들아, 이런 이유로 너희도 그리스도의 몸으로 인하여 율법에 죽은 자가 되었느니라. 이는 너희가 다른 이, 곧 죽은 자들로부터 일으켜지신 그분과 혼인하게 되도록 하려 함이요, 우리가 하나님께 열매를 내도록 하려 함이라.
4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.
5 이는 우리가 육신 안에 있었을 때 율법에 의하여 존재하였던 죄들의 움직임들이 사망에 이르는 열매를 내도록 우리의 지체들 안에서 활동하였기 때문이라.
5 For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
6 그러나 이제는 우리가 붙잡힌 것 안에서 죽었기에 우리는 율법으로부터 구출되었느니라. 이는 우리가 영의 새로움 안에서 섬기고 법조문의 낡음 안에서 섬기지 아니하려 함이라.
6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
7 그렇다면 우리가 무슨 말을 하겠느냐? 율법이 죄냐? 하나님께서 금하시기를 바라노라. 아니니라. 율법에 의하지 아니하고는 내가 죄를 몰랐으리라. 이는 “너는 탐내지 말지니라.” 하고 율법이 말하지 아니하였다면 내가 정욕을 몰랐을 것이기 때문이라.
7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
8 그러나 명령에 의하여 계기를 잡은 죄가 내 안에서 온갖 부류의 욕구를 야기하였느니라. 이는 율법이 없이는 죄가 죽었기 때문이라.
8 But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.
9 이는 한때 내가 율법 없이 살아 있었으나 명령이 왔을 때 죄가 되살아나서 나는 죽었기 때문이라.
9 For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.
10 그런즉 생명에 이르도록 제정된 명령이 사망에 이르게 하는 것임을 내가 발견하였느니라.
10 And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.
11 이는 명령으로 계기를 잡은 죄가 나를 속였으며 그것으로 나를 살해하였기 때문이라.
11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.
12 이런 이유로 율법은 거룩하고 명령도 거룩하며 정당하고 선하니라.
12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
13 그렇다면 그 선한 것이 나에게 사망이 되었느냐? 하나님께서 금하시기를 바라노라. 그러나 죄가 죄로 나타나도록 내 안에서 죄가 그 선한 것으로 사망을 이루었노라. 이는 죄가 명령에 의하여 지극히 죄 많게 되도록 하려 함이라.
13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.
14 이는 율법이 영적인 것임을 우리가 알지만 내가 육신적이어서 죄 아래 팔렸기 때문이라.
14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
15 이는 내가 행하는 그것을 내가 수용하지 아니함이요, 내가 바라는 그것을 내가 행하지 아니하기 때문이라. 오히려 내가 증오하는 그것을 내가 행하는도다.
15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.
16 그런즉 만일 내가 바라지 아니하는 그것을 내가 행한다면 나는 율법이 선하다는 점에 대해 율법과 의견을 같이하노라.
16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.
17 그렇다면 이제 그것을 행하는 이는 내가 아니라 다만 내 안에 거하고 있는 죄니라.
17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
18 이는 내 안에 (즉, 내 육신 안에) 선한 것이 전혀 거하고 있지 않음을 내가 알기 때문이라. 나에게 하려는 의지가 있으나 그 선한 것을 수행하는 방법을 내가 발견하지 못하노라.
18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
19 이는 내가 바라는 선을 내가 행하지 아니하고 오히려 내가 바라지 아니하는 악을 내가 행하기 때문이라.
19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
20 이제 만일 내가 바라지 아니하는 것을 내가 행한다면 그것을 행하는 이는 더 이상 내가 아니요, 다만 내 안에 거하고 있는 죄니라.
20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
21 그런즉 내가 하나의 법을 발견하였나니, 내가 선을 행하기를 바랄 때 악이 나와 함께 있다는 것이라.
21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
22 이는 내가 속사람을 따라 하나님의 법을 크게 즐거워하기 때문이라.
22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
23 그러나 내 지체들 속에 있는 또 다른 법을 보나니, 나의 생각의 법과 전쟁하여 나를 내 지체들 속에 있는 죄의 법에게로 사로잡아 오는도다.
23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
24 오, 나는 비참한 사람이로다! 누가 나를 이 사망의 몸에서 구해 내겠는가?
24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
25 나는 우리 주이신 예수 그리스도를 통하여 하나님께 감사드리노라. 그렇기에 나 자신은 생각으로 하나님의 법을 섬기나 육신으로는 죄의 법을 섬기노라.
25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
