1 그런즉 주께서 사무엘에게 말씀하시기를, “내가 사울이 이스라엘을 통치하지 못하게 거절한 것을 알면서 언제까지 너는 사울을 위하여 애곡하려느냐? 너의 뿔을 기름으로 채우고 가라. 내가 너를 베들레헴족 이새에게 보내겠노라. 이는 내가 그의 아들들 사이에서 한 왕을 나에게 마련해 두었기 때문이라.” 하셨느니라.
1 And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.
2 그러자 사무엘이 말씀드리기를, “어떻게 제가 갈 수 있겠나이까? 만일 사울이 그것을 듣는다면 그가 저를 죽이려 하리이다.” 하였더라. 이에 주께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라. “너의 곁에 암송아지를 데리고 가서 말하기를, ‘내가 주께 희생 제물을 드리러 왔노라.’ 하라.
2 And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the LORD said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the LORD.
3 그리고 희생 제물을 드리는 일에 이새를 부르라. 그리하면 네가 해야 하는 일을 내가 너에게 보여 주겠노라. 그런즉 너는 내가 너에게 지명해 주는 자에게 기름을 부어 나에게 구별시키라.”
3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.
4 그러자 사무엘이 주께서 일러 주신 대로 행하여 베들레헴으로 갔더라. 그리고 그가 오자 마을의 장로들이 떨며 말하기를, “당신께서는 평화롭게 오시나이까?” 하였더라.
4 And Samuel did that which the LORD spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?
5 이에 그가 말하기를, “평화롭게 왔도다. 내가 주께 희생 제물을 드리러 왔노라. 너희 자신을 성결하게 구별하고 나와 함께 희생 제물을 드리는 일에 오라.” 하였더라. 그러자 그가 이새와 그의 아들들을 성결하게 구별하였고 희생 제물을 드리는 일에 그들을 불렀더라.
5 And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
6 ¶ 이윽고 그들이 왔을 때 이러한 일이 있었으니, 그가 엘리압을 바라보며 말하기를, “확실히 주의 기름 부음 받은 자가 그분 앞에 있도다.” 하였더라.
6 ¶ And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD'S anointed is before him.
7 그러나 주께서 사무엘에게 말씀하시기를, “그의 용모나 그의 신장의 높이를 보지 말라. 이는 내가 그를 거부한 까닭이라. 이는 주가 사람이 보는 것처럼 보지 아니하기 때문이라. 사람은 겉모습을 보나, 주는 마음을 보기 때문이라.” 하셨느니라.
7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
8 그때 이새가 아비나답을 불렀고, 그로 하여금 사무엘 앞을 지나가게 하였더라. 그러자 그가 말하기를, “이 사람도 주께서 선택하지 아니하셨도다.” 하였더라.
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.
9 그때 이새가 샴마흐를 지나가게 하였더라. 그러자 그가 말하기를, “이 사람도 주께서 선택하지 아니하셨도다.” 하였더라.
9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.
10 이새가 다시 그의 일곱 아들들을 사무엘 앞으로 지나가게 하였더라. 그러자 사무엘이 이새에게 말하기를, “주께서 이들을 선택하지 아니하셨도다.” 하였더라.
10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these.
11 그런즉 사무엘이 이새에게 말하기를, “너의 모든 자식들이 여기에 있느냐?” 하였더라. 그러자 그가 말하기를, “아직 막내가 남아 있나이다. 그런데 보소서, 그는 양들을 지키고 있나이다.” 하였더라. 이에 사무엘이 이새에게 말하기를, “사람을 보내서 그를 데려오라. 이는 우리가 그가 여기로 올 때까지는 앉지 아니할 것이기 때문이라.” 하였더라.
11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.
12 그러자 그가 사람을 보내어 그를 데리고 들어왔더라. 이제 그는 불그스름하고 아름다운 용모를 지녔으며 보기에 좋았더라. 그리고 주께서 말씀하시기를, “이 자가 그니, 일어나 그에게 기름을 부으라.” 하셨느니라.
12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.
13 그때 사무엘이 기름이 든 뿔을 취하여 그의 형제들 한가운데서 그에게 기름을 부었더라. 그러자 그날 이후로 주의 영이 다윗 위에 임하셨더라. 그래서 사무엘이 일어나 라마흐로 갔더라.
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
14 ¶ 반면에 주의 영이 사울에게서 떠났고 주로부터 나온 악한 영이 그를 괴롭게 하였더라.
14 ¶ But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.
15 그러자 사울의 종들이 그에게 이같이 말하였더라. “이제 보소서. 하나님께로부터 온 악한 영이 당신을 괴롭게 하나이다.
15 And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.
16 이제 우리 주께서 당신 앞에 있는 당신의 종들에게 명하시어 하프를 기교 있게 연주하는 사람을 찾아내도록 하소서. 그리하면 하나님께로부터 온 악한 영이 당신께 임할 때 이러한 일이 있으리니, 그가 자기 손으로 연주하면 당신께서 나으시리이다.”
16 Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.
17 그러자 사울이 자기 종들에게 말하기를, “이제 나를 위해 연주를 잘할 수 있는 한 사람을 준비하여 그를 나에게로 데려오라.” 하였더라.
17 And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.
18 그때 종들 중 한 명이 대답하여 말하기를, “보소서, 제가 베들레헴족 이새의 아들 한 명을 보았는데 그는 기교 있게 연주하는 자요, 막강하고 용맹한 남자며, 전사요, 사안들을 다루는 데 있어서 신중하며, 준수한 인물이니, 주께서 그와 함께 계시나이다.” 하였더라.
18 Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him.
19 ¶ 이러한 이유로 사울이 이새에게 전령들을 보내며 말하기를, “양들과 함께 있는, 너의 아들 다윗을 나에게 보내라.” 하였더라.
19 ¶ Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep.
20 그러자 이새가 나귀를 취하여 빵과 포도즙 한 병과 새끼 염소를 실었고 그것들을 자신의 아들 다윗 편으로 사울에게 보냈더라.
20 And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.
21 이에 다윗이 사울에게 와서 그의 앞에 섰더라. 그리고 그가 다윗을 대단히 사랑하였더라. 그런즉 다윗이 그의 병기 드는 자가 되었더라.
21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.
22 그런 다음에 사울이 이새에게 사람을 보내며 말하기를, “내가 너에게 간구하노니, 다윗이 내 앞에 서게 하라. 이는 그가 나의 목전에 호의를 발견하였기 때문이라.” 하였더라.
22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.
23 그리고 하나님께로부터 온 악한 영이 사울에게 임하였을 때 이러한 일이 있었으니, 다윗이 하프를 들고 자기 손으로 연주하였더라. 그렇게 하자 사울이 활력을 되찾고 나았으며 악한 영이 그에게서 떠났더라.
23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
