1 이후에 사무엘이 죽었더라. 그런즉 모든 이스라엘인들이 함께 모여 그를 애도하였으며 그를 라마흐에 있는 그의 집 안에 장사하였더라. 그리고 다윗은 일어나 파란 광야로 내려갔더라.

And Samuel died; and all the Israelites were gathered together, and lamented him, and buried him in his house at Ramah. And David arose, and went down to the wilderness of Paran.

2 그리고 마온에는 한 남자가 있었는데 그의 소유들이 칼멜에 있었더라. 그리고 그 남자는 매우 창대하였으니, 그가 삼천 마리의 양들과 일천 마리의 염소들을 보유하였더라. 그런즉 그가 칼멜에서 자기 양들의 털을 깎고 있었더라.

And there was a man in Maon, whose possessions were in Carmel; and the man was very great, and he had three thousand sheep, and a thousand goats: and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel.

3 이제 그 남자의 이름은 나발이었으며, 그의 아내의 이름은 아비가일이었더라. 그리고 그녀는 좋은 명철과 아름다운 외모를 가진 여자였더라. 그러나 그 남자는 그의 행동거지들에 있어서 무례하고 악하였더라. 그리고 그는 칼렙의 집에 속하였더라.

Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail: and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of Caleb.

4 ¶ 그런즉 다윗은 나발이 자기 양들의 털을 깎은 것을 광야 가운데서 들었더라.

¶ And David heard in the wilderness that Nabal did shear his sheep.

5 그리하여 다윗이 열 명의 청년들을 보냈으니, 다윗이 그 청년들에게 이같이 말하였더라. “칼멜로 올라가 나발에게로 가라. 그리고 그에게 나의 이름으로 문안하라.

And David sent out ten young men, and David said unto the young men, Get you up to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in my name:

6 그런즉 번영 가운데 사는 그에게 너희는 이같이 말하라. ‘당신께도 화평이 있기를 바라고, 당신의 집에도 화평이 있기를 바라며 당신께서 소유한 모든 것에 화평이 있기를 바라나이다.

And thus shall ye say to him that liveth in prosperity, Peace be both to thee, and peace be to thine house, and peace be unto all that thou hast.

7 그리고 이제 당신께서 털 깎는 자들을 두고 있는 것을 제가 들었나이다. 이제 저희와 함께 있던 당신의 목자들에 관해서는, 그들이 칼멜에 있던 기간 내내 저희는 그들에게 해를 입히지 아니하였고, 그들에게 어떤 것도 분실한 일이 없었나이다.

And now I have heard that thou hast shearers: now thy shepherds which were with us, we hurt them not, neither was there ought missing unto them, all the while they were in Carmel.

8 당신의 청년들에게 물으소서. 그리하면 그들이 당신께 알리리이다. 이러한 이유로 청년들이 당신의 두 눈에서 호의를 발견하도록 허락하여 주소서. 이는 저희가 좋은 날에 오기 때문이니이다. 제가 당신께 간구하오니, 당신의 손에 닿는 것이 무엇이든지 당신의 종들에게, 또 당신의 아들 다윗에게 주소서.’”

Ask thy young men, and they will shew thee. Wherefore let the young men find favour in thine eyes: for we come in a good day: give, I pray thee, whatsoever cometh to thine hand unto thy servants, and to thy son David.

9 그런즉 다윗의 청년들이 도착하였을 때 그들이 이 모든 말들을 다윗의 이름으로 나발에게 고한 뒤 말을 마쳤더라.

And when David's young men came, they spake to Nabal according to all those words in the name of David, and ceased.

10 ¶ 그러자 나발이 다윗의 종들에게 대답하여 이같이 말하였더라. “다윗이 누구냐? 또 이새의 아들은 누구냐? 요즘은 저마다 자기 주인에게서 탈주하는 여러 종들이 있도다.

¶ And Nabal answered David's servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the son of Jesse? there be many servants now a days that break away every man from his master.

11 그렇다면 내가 나의 빵과 나의 물과 나의 털 깎는 자들을 위하여 내가 잡은 나의 고기를 취해서 어디 출신인지도 모르는 남자들에게 내가 그것을 주어야 하겠느냐?”

Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I have killed for my shearers, and give it unto men, whom I know not whence they be?

12 그렇게 하여 다윗의 청년들이 그들의 길을 돌이켜 다시갔으며, 와서 그렇게 말한 모든 것을 그에게 알렸더라.

So David's young men turned their way, and went again, and came and told him all those sayings.

13 그러자 다윗이 그의 사람들에게 말하기를, “너희 각인은 모두 자기 칼을 차라.” 하였더라. 이에 그들이 모든 남자마다 자기 칼을 찼더라. 그리고 다윗도 자기 칼을 찼더라. 그런즉 다윗을 따라 올라간 남자들 약 사백 명이 있었고, 이백 명은 물품 옆에 있었더라.

And David said unto his men, Gird ye on every man his sword. And they girded on every man his sword; and David also girded on his sword: and there went up after David about four hundred men; and two hundred abode by the stuff.

14 ¶ 그러나 청년들 중 한 명이 나발의 아내 아비가일에게 알리며 말하기를, “보소서, 다윗이 우리 주인에게 문안하려고 광야에서 전령들을 보냈는데 그가 그들을 심하게 비난하였나이다.

¶ But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's wife, saying, Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to salute our master; and he railed on them.

15 그러나 그 남자들은 우리에게 매우 선하였으니, 우리가 해를 입지 않았고 우리가 들판들에 있었을 때 우리가 그들과 친교가 있는 동안에는 어떤 것도 우리에게서 없어진 것이 없었나이다.

But the men were very good unto us, and we were not hurt, neither missed we any thing, as long as we were conversant with them, when we were in the fields:

16 우리가 그들 곁에서 양들을 지키는 동안 내내 그들은 우리에게 밤낮으로 벽이 되어 주었나이다.

They were a wall unto us both by night and day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep.

17 그러므로 이제 당신께서 하실 것을 아시고 숙고하소서. 이는 우리 주인과 그의 온 집안을 대적하여 악이 결정되었기 때문이니이다. 이는 그가 지독한 벨리알의 아들이므로 한 사람도 그에게 말할 수 없기 때문이니이다.” 하였더라.

Now therefore know and consider what thou wilt do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his household: for he is such a son of Belial, that a man cannot speak to him.

18 ¶ 그때 아비가일이 서둘러 이백 덩이의 빵들과 포도주 두 부대들과 이미 조리된 다섯 마리의 양들과 볶아진 곡식 다섯 도량과 건포도들 일백 송이들과 이백 덩이의 무화과들을 챙겨 그것들을 나귀들 위에 실었더라.

¶ Then Abigail made haste, and took two hundred loaves, and two bottles of wine, and five sheep ready dressed, and five measures of parched corn, and an hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on asses.

19 그런 다음에 그녀가 자신의 종들에게 말하기를, “나보다 앞서 계속 가라. 보라, 내가 너희를 따라가겠노라.” 하였더라. 그러나 그녀가 자신의 남편 나발에게 알리지 아니하였더라.

And she said unto her servants, Go on before me; behold, I come after you. But she told not her husband Nabal.

20 그런즉 그녀가 나귀를 타는 동안 이와 같은 일이 있었으니, 그녀가 언덕의 도피처를 따라 내려왔더니, 보라, 다윗과 그의 사람들이 그녀와 마주하여 내려왔더라. 그리하여 그녀가 그들을 맞이하였더라.

And it was so, as she rode on the ass, that she came down by the covert of the hill, and, behold, David and his men came down against her; and she met them.

21 이때 다윗은 이같이 말하였더라. “이 사내가 광야 가운데 가진 모든 것을 내가 지켜 주어 그에게 귀속되어 있는 모든 것 중 아무것도 없어지지 않도록 해 준 것이 확실히 헛되었도다. 그런즉 그가 나에게 선을 악으로 갚았도다.

Now David had said, Surely in vain have I kept all that this fellow hath in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that pertained unto him: and he hath requited me evil for good.

22 만일 내가 아침 햇살이 비출 때까지 그에게 귀속되어 있는 모든 자들 중에서 벽에 오줌 누는 어떤 자라도 남겨 둔다면 하나님께서 다윗의 원수들에게 벌을 내리시고 또한 더 내리시기를 바라노라.”

So and more also do God unto the enemies of David, if I leave of all that pertain to him by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall.

23 그런즉 아비가일이 다윗을 보자 그녀가 서둘러 나귀에서 내렸으니, 다윗 앞에서 그녀의 얼굴을 대고 엎드리며 자신의 몸을 땅바닥으로 숙여 절하였고,

And when Abigail saw David, she hasted, and lighted off the ass, and fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to the ground,

24 그의 두 발 앞에 엎드린 채 이같이 말하였더라. “나의 주여, 이 죄악이 제 위에, 제 위에 임하게 하소서. 그리고 제가 당신께 간구하오니, 당신이 듣는 데서 당신의 몸종이 고하도록 허락하시어 당신의 몸종의 말들을 들어주소서.

And fell at his feet, and said, Upon me, my lord, upon me let this iniquity be: and let thine handmaid, I pray thee, speak in thine audience, and hear the words of thine handmaid.

25 제가 당신께 간구하오니, 나의 주께서는 이 벨리알의 남자, 곧 나발을 유념하지 마소서. 이는 그의 이름이 그러한 것처럼 그도 그러하기 때문이니이다. 나발이 그의 이름이니, 우둔함이 그의 곁에 있나이다. 그러나 당신의 몸종인 저는 당신께서 보내신 나의 주의 청년들을 보지 못하였나이다.

Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard this man of Belial, even Nabal: for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I thine handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom thou didst send.

26 그러므로 이제, 나의 주여, 주께서 살아 계심과 당신의 혼이 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하노니, 당신께서 피를 흘리러 오시는 것과 자기 자신의 손으로 친히 복수하는 것을 주께서 막으셨으므로 이제 당신의 원수들과, 나의 주께 악을 구하는 자들은 나발과 같이 되게 하소서.

Now therefore, my lord, as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, seeing the LORD hath withholden thee from coming to shed blood, and from avenging thyself with thine own hand, now let thine enemies, and they that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.

27 그리고 이제 당신의 몸종이 나의 주께 가져온 이 축복을 나의 주를 따르는 청년들에게 바로 주어지게 허락하소서.

And now this blessing which thine handmaid hath brought unto my lord, let it even be given unto the young men that follow my lord.

28 제가 당신께 간구하오니, 당신의 여종의 범법을 용서하소서. 이는 주께서 틀림없이 나의 주께 확실한 집을 만들어 주실 것이기 때문이요, 나의 주께서 주의 전투들을 싸우시고, 당신의 모든 날들에 악이 당신에게서 발견되지 아니하였기 때문이니이다.

I pray thee, forgive the trespass of thine handmaid: for the LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house; because my lord fighteth the battles of the LORD, and evil hath not been found in thee all thy days.

29 그럼에도 한 사람이 당신을 뒤쫓아가고 당신의 혼을 찾도록 일으켜지나이다. 그러나 내 주의 혼이 주 당신의 하나님과 함께 생명의 묶음으로 매여 있으리이다. 그런즉 그분께서 당신의 원수들의 혼들, 곧 그들을 무릿매로 던져 버리시리니, 무릿매의 중앙에서 던져지는 것과 같으리이다.

Yet a man is risen to pursue thee, and to seek thy soul: but the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with the LORD thy God; and the souls of thine enemies, them shall he sling out, as out of the middle of a sling.

30 그리고 주께서 친히 당신에 관하여 언급하신 모든 좋은 것에 따라 나의 주께 행하시어 이스라엘을 다스리도록 당신을 임명하실 때 이러한 일이 있으리니,

And it shall come to pass, when the LORD shall have done to my lord according to all the good that he hath spoken concerning thee, and shall have appointed thee ruler over Israel;

31 이것, 곧 당신께서 이유 없이 피를 흘린 것이나 나의 주께서 스스로 복수하신 것이 당신께 근심거리가 되지 아니할 것이요, 나의 주께 마음의 걸리는 것이 되지 아니할 것이니이다. 그러나 주께서 나의 주를 선대하실 그때 당신의 몸종을 기억하소서.”

That this shall be no grief unto thee, nor offence of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed blood causeless, or that my lord hath avenged himself: but when the LORD shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thine handmaid.

32 ¶ 그러자 다윗이 아비가일에게 이같이 말하였더라. “이날 나를 맞이하도록 그대를 보내신, 이스라엘의 주 하나님께서 찬양받으시기를 바라노라.

¶ And David said to Abigail, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, which sent thee this day to meet me:

33 그리고 그대의 충고가 복을 받기를 바라고 그대가 복을 받기를 바라노라. 그대는, 이날에 내가 피를 흘리러 가는 것과 나 자신의 손으로 직접 복수하러 가는 것으로부터 지켜 주었도다.

And blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou, which hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with mine own hand.

34 이는 정녕코 그대에게 해를 입히지 못하도록 나를 막으신, 이스라엘의 주 하나님께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하노니, 그대가 서둘러 나를 맞이하러 오지 아니하였더라면 분명히 아침 햇살이 비출 때까지 벽에 오줌 누는 어떤 자라도 나발에게 남아 있지 못하였을 것이기 때문이라.”

For in very deed, as the LORD God of Israel liveth, which hath kept me back from hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall.

35 그렇게 하여 다윗이 그녀의 손에서 그녀가 그에게 가져온 것을 받고 그녀에게 말하기를, “그대의 집으로 평안히 올라가라. 보라, 나는 그대의 음성에 경청하였고 그대의 인격을 기꺼이 받아들였도다.” 하였더라.

So David received of her hand that which she had brought him, and said unto her, Go up in peace to thine house; see, I have hearkened to thy voice, and have accepted thy person.

36 ¶ 그런 다음에 아비가일이 나발에게 왔더라. 그런데 보라, 그가 왕의 잔치처럼 자기 집 안에서 잔치를 열었더라. 그리고 그가 매우 취하였으므로 나발의 마음이 그의 안에서 즐거워하였더라. 이러한 이유로 그녀가 아침 햇살이 비추기까지는 그에게 많든 적든 아무것도 알리지 아니하였더라.

¶ And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal's heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken: wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light.

37 그러나 아침에 나발이 포도주에서 깨고 나서 그의 아내가 그에게 이런 것들을 알렸을 때 이러한 일이 있었으니, 그의 마음이 그의 안에서 죽었기에 그가 돌덩이처럼 되었더라.

But it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone.

38 그러고 나서 약 십 일이 지난 후에 이러한 일이 있었으니, 주께서 나발을 치셨으므로 그가 죽었더라.

And it came to pass about ten days after, that the LORD smote Nabal, that he died.

39 ¶ 그런즉 다윗이 나발이 죽었다는 것을 들었을 때 그가 말하기를, “나발의 손에서 나의 치욕의 송사를 변호하셨고 그분의 종을 악으로부터 지켜 주신 주께서 찬양받으시기를 바라노라. 이는 주께서 나발의 사악함을 자기 자신의 머리 위로 되돌리셨기 때문이라.” 하였더라. 그리하여 다윗이 아비가일을 자신에게 아내로 취하려고 사람을 보내어 그녀와 대화하게 하였더라.

¶ And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be the LORD, that hath pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept his servant from evil: for the LORD hath returned the wickedness of Nabal upon his own head. And David sent and communed with Abigail, to take her to him to wife.

40 그런즉 다윗의 종들이 칼멜에 있는 아비가일에게 왔을 때 그들이 그녀에게 일러 말하기를, “다윗이 당신을 그에게 아내로 취하고자 저희를 당신에게 보냈나이다.” 하였더라.

And when the servants of David were come to Abigail to Carmel, they spake unto her, saying, David sent us unto thee, to take thee to him to wife.

41 그러자 그녀가 일어나 그녀의 얼굴을 땅에 대고 자신의 몸을 숙여 절하며 말하기를, “보소서, 당신의 몸종으로 하여금 내 주의 종들의 발을 씻는 종이 되게 하소서.” 하였더라.

And she arose, and bowed herself on her face to the earth, and said, Behold, let thine handmaid be a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.

42 그런 다음에 아비가일이 서둘러 일어나 나귀 위에 탔으니, 그녀에게 속한 다섯 명의 젊은 여인들이 그녀를 따라갔더라. 그리고 그녀가 다윗의 전령들을 따라가서 그의 아내가 되었더라.

And Abigail hasted, and arose, and rode upon an ass, with five damsels of hers that went after her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife.

43 다윗이 또한 이즈르엘의 아히노암을 취하였으니, 또한 그들이 둘 다 그의 아내들이 되었더라.

David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel; and they were also both of them his wives.

44 ¶ 그러나 사울이 자신의 딸이자 다윗의 아내인 미칼을 갈림 출신이자 라이시의 아들 프할티에게 주었더라.

¶ But Saul had given Michal his daughter, David's wife, to Phalti the son of Laish, which was of Gallim.
