1 그러고 나서 이러한 일이 있었으니, 아폴로가 고린도에 있는 동안 바울이 위쪽 연안 지역들을 경유하여 에베소에 왔더라. 그리고 어떤 제자들을 만나서

And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,

2 그가 그들에게 말하기를, “너희가 믿은 이래로 너희는 성령님을 받은 적이 있느냐?” 하였더라. 이에 그들이 그에게 말하기를, “우리는 성령님이 계신지조차 조금도 들은 적이 없노라.” 하였더라.

He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

3 그러자 그가 그들에게 말하기를, “그렇다면 너희는 무슨 침례까지 받았느냐?” 하니라. 이에 그들이 말하기를, “요한의 침례까지라.” 하였더라.

And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.

4 그때 바울이 말하기를, “진실로 요한은 회개의 침례로 침례를 주며 백성에게 그들이 그의 뒤에 오시는 분, 즉 그리스도 예수를 믿어야 한다고 말하였느니라.” 하였더라.

Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

5 그들이 이것을 들은 후에 그들은 주 예수의 이름으로 침례를 받았더라.

When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

6 그러고 나서 바울이 그의 두 손으로 그들에게 안수하자 성령님이 그들 위에 임하셨더라. 그러자 그들이 방언들로 말하며 예언하였더라.

And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

7 그리고 그 남자들은 전부 약 열두 명이었더라.

And all the men were about twelve.

8 그런 다음에 그가 회당 안으로 들어갔고, 삼 개월의 기간 동안 담대하게 전하면서 하나님의 왕국에 관한 것들을 토론하고 설득하였더라.

And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.

9 그러나 다양한 사람들이 완악해져서 믿지 않고 오히려 무리 앞에서 그 길에 관하여 악담하자 바울은 그들에게서 떠나 제자들을 분리시켜 투란누스라 하는 이의 학교 안에서 매일 토론하였더라.

But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.

10 그리고 이것이 이 년의 기간 동안 지속되었더라. 그렇게 하여 아시아에 거하였던 자들 모두가 주 예수의 말씀을 들었으니, 유대인들과 헬라인들 모두라.

And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.

11 그리고 하나님께서 바울의 두 손을 통하여 특별한 기적들을 발현하셨더라.

And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:

12 그렇게 하여 그의 몸에서 나온 손수건들이나 앞치마들이 병든 자들에게 이르면 질병들이 그들에게서 떠났고 악한 영들이 그들에게서 나갔더라.

So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.

13 ¶ 그때 방랑 생활을 하는 유대인 퇴마사들 중 몇몇이, 악한 영들이 들린 자들에게 주 예수의 이름을 부르려고 그들을 데려와 말하기를, “바울이 선포하는 예수를 통하여 우리가 너희에게 엄명하노라.” 하였더라.

¶ Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.

14 그리고 유대인이자 제사장들 중 우두머리인 스케와라는 자에게 일곱 아들들이 있었는데 그들도 그렇게 하였더라.

And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.

15 그러자 그 악한 영이 대답하여 말하기를, “예수님은 내가 알고 바울도 내가 알지만 너희들은 누구냐?” 하였더라.

And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?

16 이에 그 안에 악한 영이 있던 사람이 그들 위에 뛰어올랐고 그들을 이겼으며 그들을 대적하여 압도한지라, 그러한 이유로 그들이 벌거벗고 상처 입은 채로 그 집에서 도망쳤더라.

And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

17 그리하여 이것이 에베소에 거하는 유대인들과 헬라인들에게도 모두 알려졌고 두려움이 그들 모두에게 닥쳤으며 주 예수의 이름이 드높여졌더라.

And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

18 그리고 믿은 이들이 많이 와서 고백하였으며, 자신들의 행실들을 보였더라.

And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds.

19 또한 기묘한 계략들을 사용하였던 자들 중 많은 이들이 그들의 책들을 함께 가져왔고 모든 사람들 앞에서 그것들을 불태웠더라. 그리고 그들이 그것들의 가격을 계산하였는데 그것은 은화 오만 개나 되었더라.

Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.

20 그렇게 하여 하나님의 말씀이 막강하게 증대하며 압도하였더라.

So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.

21 ¶ 이와 같이 일어난 일들이 끝난 후에 바울이 마케도니아와 아카이아를 경유하였을 때 예루살렘으로 가려고 영 안에서 결단하며 말하기를, “내가 거기에 들른 뒤에는 내가 반드시 로마도 보아야만 하느니라.” 하였더라.

¶ After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.

22 그렇게 하여 그가 자신을 섬기던 자들 중 두 명을 마케도니아 안으로 보냈으니, 디모데우스와 에라스투스더라. 그러나 그 자신은 한동안 아시아에 그대로 있었더라.

So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season.

23 그리고 바로 그때 그 길에 대하여 적지 않은 소요가 일어났더라.

And the same time there arose no small stir about that way.

24 이는 은세공업자이며 데메트리우스란 이름으로 불리는 어떤 남자 한 명이 다이애나를 위한 은 성물 함들을 만들었으며 기능공들에게 적지 않은 소득을 가져다주었기 때문이라.

For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen;

25 그가 같은 직업에 속한 기술자들과 함께 그들을 불러 이같이 말하였더라. “선생님들이여, 당신들도 알다시피 이 기술직으로 우리가 우리의 부를 얻나이다.

Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth.

26 더욱이 당신들이 보고 듣다시피, 에베소에서뿐만 아니라 거의 아시아 전체에 걸쳐 이 바울이 많은 이들을 설득하여 돌이키게 하며 말하기를, ‘손들로 만들어진 것들은 전혀 신들이 아니니라.’ 하였나이다.

Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:

27 그렇게 하여 우리의 이 기술직이 무가치하게 여겨질 위험에 처하였을 뿐 아니라 위대한 여신 다이애나의 성전도 멸시당할 위험에 처하였고, 온 아시아와 세상이 경배하는 그녀의 웅장함도 멸하여질 위험에 처하였나이다.”

So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.

28 이에 이렇게 말한 것들을 그들이 듣자 그들이 격노로 가득 차서 외치며 말하기를, “에베소인들의 다이애나는 위대하시도다.” 하였더라.

And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

29 그러자 도시 전체가 혼란으로 가득 찼더라. 그리고 그들은 마케도니아 사람들이자 바울의 여행 동지들인 가이우스와 아리스타쿠스를 잡고서 한 뜻이 되어 극장 안으로 돌진하였더라.

And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre.

30 이에 바울이 백성에게 들어가려고 하자 제자들이 그를 내버려 두지 아니하였더라.

And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.

31 그리고 아시아의 최고위층에 속하며 바울의 친구들이었던 어떤 이들이 그에게 사람을 보내며 그가 스스로 극장 안으로 들어가는 모험을 하지 말 것을 그에게 간절히 청하였더라.

And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre.

32 그러므로 일부가 한 가지를 외치면 일부는 다른 것을 외쳤으니, 그 집회가 혼란스러웠고 과반수가 어떤 이유로 그들이 함께 온 것인지 몰랐기 때문이라.

Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.

33 그리하여 그들이 무리에서 알렉산더를 끌어냈고 유대인들은 그를 앞에 두었더라. 그리고 알렉산더가 손으로 신호를 보내며 백성에게 그의 변론을 하려 하였더라.

And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made his defence unto the people.

34 그러나 그들이 그가 유대인인 것을 알았을 때 약 두 시간의 간격 동안 모두 한목소리로 소리 지르기를, “에베소인들의 다이애나는 위대하시도다.” 하였도다.

But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

35 그러다가 마을 서기가 백성을 가라앉힌 후에 그가 이같이 말하였더라. “너희, 에베소의 남자들아, 에베소인들의 도시가 위대한 여신 다이애나의 경배자들이요, 주피터에게서 떨어진 형상의 경배자들인 것을 모르는 자가 누구리요?

And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?

36 그렇다면 이런 것들이 거슬러 언급될 수 없으므로 너희는 마땅히 조용히 하고 아무것도 경솔하게 해서는 아니 되느니라.

Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.

37 이는 너희가 여기로 이 남자들을 데려왔는데 그들은 교회들에서 강도짓한 자들도 아니요, 그렇다고 너희의 여신을 모독하는 자들도 아니기 때문이라.

For ye have brought hither these men, which are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess.

38 이러한 이유로 만일 데메트리우스와 또 그와 함께 있는 기능공들이 어떤 사람을 대적하여 문제가 있다면 법이 열려 있고 속주 총독들이 있도다. 그들이 서로 고소를 제기하게 하라.

Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another.

39 그러나 만일 너희가 다른 사안들에 관하여 어떤 것을 문의한다면 그것은 합법적인 집회 안에서 결정되어야 하리라.

But if ye enquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly.

40 이는 우리가 이날의 소동으로 심문을 받으러 불려갈 위험에 처하였기 때문이니, 우리가 이 집합에 관하여 설명할 수 있는 사유가 전혀 없도다.”

For we are in danger to be called in question for this day's uproar, there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse.

41 그리하여 그가 그와 같이 말한 후에 그는 그 집회를 해산시켰더라.

And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
