1 이후에 여룹바알의 아들 아비멜렉은 셰켐으로 가서 그의 어머니의 형제들에게 이르렀으니, 그들과, 자기 어머니의 아버지의 집에 속한 가족 전체와 대화를 하며 이같이 말하였더라.
1 And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother's brethren, and communed with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother's father, saying,
2 “내가 너희에게 간구하노니, 셰켐의 모든 사람들의 귀에다 전하라. ‘칠십 명이나 되는 여룹바알의 모든 아들들이 너희를 통치하는 것과 한 명이 너희를 통치하는 것 중 어느 쪽이 너희를 위하여 나으냐? 내가 너희의 뼈요, 너희의 살이라는 것을 또한 기억하라.’”
2 Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.
3 그러자 그의 어머니의 형제들이 셰켐의 모든 사람들의 귀에다 그에 대하여 이 모든 말들을 전하였더라. 이에 그들의 마음이 아비멜렉을 따르는 쪽으로 기울었더라. 이는 그들이 말하기를, “그는 우리의 형제라.” 하였기 때문이라.
3 And his mother's brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.
4 그리하여 그들이 바알브릿의 집에서 은화 칠십 개를 그에게 주었고, 아비멜렉은 그것으로, 허세를 부리고 경박한 인물들을 고용하였으니, 그들이 그를 따랐더라.
4 And they gave him threescore and ten pieces of silver out of the house of Baalberith, wherewith Abimelech hired vain and light persons, which followed him.
5 그리고 그가 오프라에 있는 자기 아버지의 집으로 가서 칠십 명이나 되는, 여룹바알의 아들들인 자기 형제들을 한 돌 위에서 살해하였더라. 그럼에도 불구하고 여룹바알의 막내 아들인 요담만은 아직 남겨졌더라. 이는 그가 자신을 숨겼기 때문이라.
5 And he went unto his father's house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.
6 그러자 셰켐의 모든 사람들이 함께 모였고 밀로의 온 집도 그리하였으니, 가서 셰켐에 있던 기둥 평야 옆에서 아비멜렉을 왕으로 삼았더라.
6 And all the men of Shechem gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and went, and made Abimelech king, by the plain of the pillar that was in Shechem.
7 ¶ 그리고 그들이 그것을 요담에게 알렸을 때, 그가 가서 그리심산의 꼭대기에 서서 자기 목소리를 높여 외쳤으니, 그들에게 이같이 말하였더라. “너희, 셰켐 사람들아, 하나님께서 너희에게 경청하시도록 나에게 경청하라.
7 ¶ And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.
8 한번은 나무들이 그들을 통솔할 왕에게 기름 부으려고 나갔노라. 그리하여 그들이 올리브나무에게 말하기를, ‘너는 우리를 통치하라.’ 하였도다.
8 The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive tree, Reign thou over us.
9 그러나 올리브나무가 그들에게 말하기를, ‘그들이 나를 통하여 나의 기름으로 하나님과 사람을 존귀하게 하거늘, 내가 그것을 놓아 두고서 나무들 위에 높여지기를 바라고 가야겠느냐?’ 하였도다.
9 But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
10 그리고 나무들이 무화과나무에게 말하기를, ‘너는 와서 우리를 통치하라.’ 하였노라.
10 And the trees said to the fig tree, Come thou, and reign over us.
11 그러나 무화과나무가 그들에게 말하기를, ‘내가 나의 달콤함과 나의 좋은 열매를 저버리고 나무들 위에 높여지기를 바라고 가야겠느냐?’ 하였도다.
11 But the fig tree said unto them, Should I forsake my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees?
12 그때 나무들이 포도나무에게 말하기를, ‘너는 와서 우리를 통치하라.’ 하였노라.
12 Then said the trees unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us.
13 그러자 포도나무가 그들에게 말하기를, ‘내가 하나님과 사람을 기쁘게 하는 나의 포도즙을 놓아 두고서 나무들 위에 높여지기를 바라고 가야겠느냐?’ 하였도다.
13 And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
14 그때 모든 나무들이 가시떨기나무에게 말하기를, ‘너는 와서 우리를 통치하라.’ 하였노라.
14 Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, and reign over us.
15 그러자 가시떨기나무가 나무들에게 말하기를, ‘만일 너희가 정말로 너희를 다스릴 왕으로 나에게 기름을 붓는다면 그때는 와서 너희의 신뢰를 나의 그림자에 두라. 그리고 만일 그렇지 아니하다면, 불이 가시떨기나무에서 나와 레바논의 백향목들을 집어삼킬지어다.’ 하였도다.
15 And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and put your trust in my shadow: and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.
16 그러므로 이제 만일 너희가 아비멜렉을 왕으로 삼은 일에 있어서 정말로 진심을 담아 행한 것이라면, 또 만일 너희가 여룹바알과 그의 집을 선대하였고 그의 두 손이 누려야 마땅한 대우만큼 그에게 행한 것이라면,
16 Now therefore, if ye have done truly and sincerely, in that ye have made Abimelech king, and if ye have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done unto him according to the deserving of his hands;
17 (이는 나의 아버지께서 너희를 위하여 싸우셨고 멀리서 그의 생명을 거는 모험을 하셨으며 너희를 미디안의 손에서 구출하셨기 때문이라.
17 (For my father fought for you, and adventured his life far, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian:
18 그런데 너희가 이날 나의 아버지의 집을 대적하여 들고일어나서 그의 아들들 칠십 명을 한 돌 위에서 살해한 뒤에 그의 여종의 아들 아비멜렉을 셰켐 사람들을 다스리는 왕으로 삼았으니, 그가 너희의 형제인 까닭이라.)
18 And ye are risen up against my father's house this day, and have slain his sons, threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maidservant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother;)
19 그렇다면 만일 너희가 이날 여룹바알과 그의 집에 정말로 진심을 담아 대한 것이라면, 그때는 너희가 아비멜렉을 크게 기뻐하라. 또 그도 너희를 크게 기뻐하게 하라.
19 If ye then have dealt truly and sincerely with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:
20 그러나 만일 그렇지 아니하다면, 불이 아비멜렉에게서 나와 셰켐 사람들과 밀로의 집을 집어삼킬지어다. 그리고 불이 셰켐 사람들과 밀로의 집에서 나와 아비멜렉을 집어삼킬지어다.”
20 But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.
21 이후에 요담이 그의 형제 아비멜렉에 대한 두려움으로 인하여 멀리 달려가서 도망하였으니, 브엘로 가서 거기에 거하였더라.
21 And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.
22 ¶ 아비멜렉이 이스라엘을 삼 년 동안 통치하였을 때,
22 ¶ When Abimelech had reigned three years over Israel,
23 그때 하나님께서 아비멜렉과 셰켐 사람들 사이에 한 악한 영을 보내셨더라. 그러자 셰켐 사람들이 아비멜렉을 배신하였더라.
23 Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:
24 이는 여룹바알의 아들들 칠십 명에게 행해진 잔인함이 임하게 하신 것이니, 그들의 피가 그들을 살해한 그들의 형제 아비멜렉 위에 놓이게 하려 하심이요, 그의 형제들을 죽이는 일에 있어서 그에게 협조한 셰켐 사람들 위에 놓이게 하려 하심이라.
24 That the cruelty done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, which slew them; and upon the men of Shechem, which aided him in the killing of his brethren.
25 그런즉 셰켐 사람들이 그를 치려고 산들의 꼭대기에 복병들을 배치하였는데 그들이 그 길을 따라 자기들 옆으로 오는 모든 자들을 강탈하였더라. 그리하여 그것이 아비멜렉에게 알려졌더라.
25 And the men of Shechem set liers in wait for him in the top of the mountains, and they robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told Abimelech.
26 그러자 에벳의 아들 가알이 그의 형제들과 함께 왔고 셰켐으로 건너갔더라. 그리고 셰켐 사람들이 그에게 자신들의 확신을 두었더라.
26 And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brethren, and went over to Shechem: and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him.
27 이후에 그들이 밭들로 나갔다가 그들의 포도원들에서 포도들을 모아서 밟았고, 기분을 내며 그들의 신의 전당 안으로 들어가서 먹고 마시며 아비멜렉을 저주하였더라.
27 And they went out into the fields, and gathered their vineyards, and trode the grapes, and made merry, and went into the house of their god, and did eat and drink, and cursed Abimelech.
28 그런즉 에벳의 아들 가알이 이같이 말하였더라. “아비멜렉이 누구며, 셰켐이 누구기에 우리가 그를 섬겨야 하느냐? 그가 여룹바알의 아들이 아니냐? 그리고 즈불이 그의 관원이 아니냐? 셰켐의 아버지 하몰의 사람들을 섬기라. 그런즉 어찌하여 우리가 그를 섬겨야겠느냐?
28 And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: for why should we serve him?
29 그런즉 하나님께서 이 백성을 나의 수하에 있게 하신다면 좋겠노라! 그때는 내가 아비멜렉을 폐하리라.” 그리하여 그가 아비멜렉에게 말하기를, “너의 군사를 증강하여 나오라.” 하였더라.
29 And would to God this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.
30 ¶ 이에 도시의 통치자 즈불이 에벳의 아들 가알의 말들을 들었을 때 그의 분노가 타올랐더라.
30 ¶ And when Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled.
31 그리하여 그가 아비멜렉에게 은밀히 전령들을 보내며 이같이 말하였더라. “보소서, 에벳의 아들 가알과 그의 형제들이 셰켐에 와 있나이다. 그런데 보소서, 그들이 당신을 대적하여 도시를 요새화하였나이다.
31 And he sent messengers unto Abimelech privily, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren be come to Shechem; and, behold, they fortify the city against thee.
32 그러므로 이제 당신과 당신 곁에 있는 백성은 밤에 일어나시어 밭에서 숨어 기다리소서.
32 Now therefore up by night, thou and the people that is with thee, and lie in wait in the field:
33 그리고 이러한 일이 있어야 하리니, 아침에 해가 뜨자마자 당신은 일찍 일어나시어 도시를 습격하소서. 그리하면 보소서, 그와 그의 곁에 있는 백성이 당신을 대적하여 나오리니, 그때 당신께서 계기를 발견하는 대로 친히 그들에게 행하실 수 있나이다.”
33 And it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, thou shalt rise early, and set upon the city: and, behold, when he and the people that is with him come out against thee, then mayest thou do to them as thou shalt find occasion.
34 ¶ 그러자 아비멜렉과 그와 함께한 모든 백성이 밤에 일어났으니, 그들이 셰켐을 대적하여 네 집단들로 나누어 숨어 기다렸더라.
34 ¶ And Abimelech rose up, and all the people that were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.
35 이윽고 에벳의 아들 가알이 나가서 그 도시 성문의 진입로 가운데 섰더라. 그러자 아비멜렉과 그와 함께하였던 백성이 숨어 기다리던 곳에서 일어났더라.
35 And Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and Abimelech rose up, and the people that were with him, from lying in wait.
36 그리하여 가알이 백성을 보았을 때 그가 즈불에게 말하기를, “보라, 산들의 꼭대기에서 백성이 내려오고 있도다.” 하였더라. 그러자 즈불이 그에게 말하기를, “네가 산들의 그림자를 보고 마치 사람들과 같다고 여기는도다.” 하였더라.
36 And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the top of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.
37 이윽고 가알이 다시 일러 말하기를, “지역의 중간으로 백성이 내려오는 것을 보라. 또 다른 집단이 므오느님의 평야를 따라 오고 있도다.” 하였더라.
37 And Gaal spake again and said, See there come people down by the middle of the land, and another company come along by the plain of Meonenim.
38 그때 즈불이 그에게 말하기를, “네가 너의 입으로 말하기를, ‘아비멜렉이 누구이기에 우리가 그를 섬겨야 하느냐?’ 하던 것은 지금 어디 있느냐? 이것이 네가 멸시하던 백성이 아니냐? 내가 이제 간구하노니, 나가서 그들과 싸우라.” 하였더라.
38 Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth, wherewith thou saidst, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast despised? go out, I pray now, and fight with them.
39 그런즉 가알이 셰켐 사람들 앞에 나가서 아비멜렉과 싸웠더라.
39 And Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.
40 그러다가 아비멜렉이 그를 추격하였고 그가 그 앞에서 도망쳤으니, 성문의 진입로에 이르기까지 많은 이들이 격퇴되어 부상을 입었더라.
40 And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and many were overthrown and wounded, even unto the entering of the gate.
41 그러고 나서 아비멜렉은 아루마에 거하였더라. 그리고 즈불은 가알과 그의 형제들을 내몰아서 그들이 셰켐에 거하지 못하게 하였더라.
41 And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah: and Zebul thrust out Gaal and his brethren, that they should not dwell in Shechem.
42 그리고 이튿날에 이러한 일이 있었으니, 백성이 밭으로 나갔더라. 그러자 그들이 아비멜렉에게 알렸더라.
42 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.
43 그런즉 그가 백성을 취하여 그들을 세 집단들로 나누었으니, 밭에서 숨어 기다리다가 바라보았는데, 보라, 백성이 도시에서 밖으로 나왔더라. 그리하여 그가 그들을 대적하여 일어나서 그들을 쳤더라.
43 And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field, and looked, and, behold, the people were come forth out of the city; and he rose up against them, and smote them.
44 그리하여 아비멜렉과 그의 곁에 있던 집단이 앞으로 돌진하여 도시 성문의 진입로 가운데 섰더라. 그리고 다른 두 집단들은 밭들에 있던 모든 이들에게 달려가서 그들을 살해하였더라.
44 And Abimelech, and the company that was with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and the two other companies ran upon all the people that were in the fields, and slew them.
45 그리하여 아비멜렉이 그날 종일 그 도시를 대적하여 싸웠으니, 그가 그 도시를 점령하여 그 안에 있던 백성을 살해하였으며 그 도시를 쳐부수고 그곳에 소금을 뿌렸더라.
45 And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and slew the people that was therein, and beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.
46 ¶ 그리고 셰켐의 망대에 속한 모든 사람들이 그것을 들었을 때, 그들이 브릿 신당의 요새로 들어갔더라.
46 ¶ And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard that, they entered into an hold of the house of the god Berith.
47 그리고 셰켐의 망대에 속한 모든 사람들이 함께 모인 것이 아비멜렉에게 알려졌더라.
47 And it was told Abimelech, that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.
48 그리하여 아비멜렉이 스스로 잘몬산까지 올랐으니, 그와 그의 곁에 있던 이들도 올랐더라. 그러다가 아비멜렉이 자기 손으로 도끼를 집어서 나무들에서 원가지 하나를 베어 내고 그것을 취하였더라. 그리고 그것을 자기 어깨 위에 올린 뒤에 그의 곁에 있던 이들에게 말하기를, “너희는 내가 행하는 것을 보았으니, 서둘러 내가 행한 대로 하라.” 하였더라.
48 And Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it, and laid it on his shoulder, and said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done.
49 그러자 모든 이들이 똑같이 하여 모든 남자마다 그의 원가지를 잘라 내고 아비멜렉을 따랐으니, 그것들을 요새에 놓고 그것들 위에다 요새를 불 질렀더라. 그렇게 하여 셰켐의 망대에 속한 모든 사람들 또한 죽었으니, 약 일천 명의 남녀들이더라.
49 And all the people likewise cut down every man his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them to the hold, and set the hold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.
50 ¶ 그때 아비멜렉이 데베즈로 가서 데베즈를 대적하여 주둔하였고 그것을 점령하였더라.
50 ¶ Then went Abimelech to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it.
51 그러나 그 도시 내부에는 튼튼한 망대가 있었는데 모든 남녀들이 그리로 도망쳤으니, 도시에 속한 모든 자들이 그리하였고, 그들이 그것을 그들에게 잠가 두고 스스로 망대의 꼭대기로 올라갔더라.
51 But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut it to them, and gat them up to the top of the tower.
52 그러자 아비멜렉이 망대에 이르러 그것을 대적하여 싸웠으니, 그것을 불로 태우려고 망대 문까지 힘들게 갔더라.
52 And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and went hard unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire.
53 그런데 어떤 여자 한 명이 맷돌 한 짝을 아비멜렉의 머리 위에 던졌고 그의 두개골을 아주 깨뜨려 버렸더라.
53 And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech's head, and all to brake his skull.
54 그때 그가 그의 병기 드는 자인 청년을 서둘러 불러 그에게 말하기를, “너의 칼을 빼서 나를 살해하라. 이는 사람들이 나에 관하여 말하기를, ‘여자가 그를 살해하였다.’ 하지 못하게 하려 함이라.” 하였더라. 이에 그의 청년이 그를 찔러 꿰뚫었으니, 그가 죽었더라.
54 Then he called hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A woman slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.
55 이윽고 이스라엘 사람들이 아비멜렉이 죽은 것을 보자 그들 각인은 자기 처소로 떠났더라.
55 And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man unto his place.
56 ¶ 이와 같이 하나님께서 아비멜렉의 사악함을 돌려주셨으니, 그가 자기 형제들 칠십 명을 살해하여 자기 아버지에게 사악하게 행한 것이라.
56 ¶ Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren:
57 그리고 셰켐 사람들의 모든 악을 하나님께서 그들의 머리 위로 돌려 주셨더라. 그리하여 그들 위로 여룹바알의 아들 요담의 저주가 임하였더라.
57 And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.
