1 이후에 예언자들의 아들들이 엘리사에게 이같이 말하였더라. “이제 보소서, 저희가 당신과 함께 거하고 있는 장소가 저희에게 너무 좁나이다.

And the sons of the prophets said unto Elisha, Behold now, the place where we dwell with thee is too strait for us.

2 저희가 당신께 간구하오니, 저희로 하여금 요르단으로 가서 거기서 각인이 들보를 위한 재목을 하나씩 가져오게 하소서. 그런 다음에 저희가 거기에 저희가 지낼 한 장소를 저희에게 만들어 두는 것을 허락하소서.” 그러자 그가 대답하기를, “너희는 가라.” 하였더라.

Let us go, we pray thee, unto Jordan, and take thence every man a beam, and let us make us a place there, where we may dwell. And he answered, Go ye.

3 그리고 누군가 말하기를, “제가 당신께 간구하오니, 만족스럽기를 바라나이다. 그리하여 당신의 종들과 함께 가 주소서.” 하였더라. 그러자 그가 대답하기를, “내가 가겠노라.” 하였더라.

And one said, Be content, I pray thee, and go with thy servants. And he answered, I will go.

4 그렇게 하여 그가 그들과 함께 갔더라. 그리고 그들이 요르단으로 왔을 때 그들이 목재를 베어 쓰러뜨렸더라.

So he went with them. And when they came to Jordan, they cut down wood.

5 그러나 누군가 들보를 위한 재목을 쓰러뜨릴 때 도끼 머리가 물속으로 빠졌더라. 그런즉 그가 소리치며 말하기를, “아, 슬프나이다, 주인이여! 이는 그것이 빌려온 것이기 때문이니이다.” 하였더라.

But as one was felling a beam, the axe head fell into the water: and he cried, and said, Alas, master! for it was borrowed.

6 그런즉 하나님의 사람이 말하기를, “그것이 어디에 빠졌느냐?” 하였더라. 그러자 그가 그 장소를 그에게 보여 주었더라. 이에 그가 나뭇가지 하나를 꺾었고 그것을 그 안으로 던졌으니 철이 떠올랐더라.

And the man of God said, Where fell it? And he shewed him the place. And he cut down a stick, and cast it in thither; and the iron did swim.

7 그러므로 그가 말하기를, “그것을 너에게로 들어 올리라.” 하였더라. 그러자 그가 자기 손을 내밀어 그것을 집었더라.

Therefore said he, Take it up to thee. And he put out his hand, and took it.

8 ¶ 그때 시리아 왕이 이스라엘을 대적하여 전쟁하였고 자기 종들과 함께 의논하며 말하기를, “이러저러한 한 장소에 나의 진영이 있으리라.” 하였더라.

¶ Then the king of Syria warred against Israel, and took counsel with his servants, saying, In such and such a place shall be my camp.

9 그러자 하나님의 사람이 이스라엘 왕에게 사람을 보내며 말하기를, “당신은 이러한 장소를 지나가지 않도록 주의하소서. 이는 시리아인들이 거기로 내려왔기 때문이니이다.” 하였더라.

And the man of God sent unto the king of Israel, saying, Beware that thou pass not such a place; for thither the Syrians are come down.

10 그런즉 하나님의 사람이 이스라엘 왕에게 알리고 그에게 경고한 장소로 그가 사람을 보내어 거기서 자신을 구원하였으니, 한두 번이 아니었더라.

And the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of, and saved himself there, not once nor twice.

11 그러므로 시리아 왕의 마음이 이 점으로 인하여 심히 근심에 빠졌더라. 그런즉 그가 자기 종들을 불렀으니, 그들에게 말하기를, “너희는 우리 중에 누가 이스라엘 왕의 편인지 나에게 알려 주지 아니하겠느냐?” 하였더라.

Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was sore troubled for this thing; and he called his servants, and said unto them, Will ye not shew me which of us is for the king of Israel?

12 그러자 그의 종들 중 한 명이 말하기를, “오, 내 주 왕이여, 저희 중에 있는 것이 아니라, 이스라엘에 있는 예언자 엘리사가 당신께서 당신의 침소에서 이야기하시는 말씀들을 이스라엘 왕에게 고하나이다.” 하였더라.

And one of his servants said, None, my lord, O king: but Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bedchamber.

13 ¶ 이에 그가 말하기를, “가서 그가 어디 있는지 정탐하라. 이는 내가 그에게 사람을 보내서 잡아 오려 함이라.” 하였더라. 그리고 그것이 그에게 이와 같은 말로 알려졌으니, “보소서, 그가 도단에 있나이다.” 하였더라.

¶ And he said, Go and spy where he is, that I may send and fetch him. And it was told him, saying, Behold, he is in Dothan.

14 그러므로 그가 거기로 말들과 병거들과 엄청난 군대를 보냈더라. 그리하여 그들이 밤에 와서 도시 주위를 둘러쌌더라.

Therefore sent he thither horses, and chariots, and a great host: and they came by night, and compassed the city about.

15 이윽고 하나님의 사람의 종이 일찍 일어나서 밖으로 나갔는데, 보라, 말들과 병거들 모두를 대동한 군대가 도시를 둘러쌌더라. 그런즉 그의 종이 그에게 말하기를, “아, 슬프나이다, 나의 주인이여! 저희가 어떻게 해야 하리이까?” 하였더라.

And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do?

16 그러자 그가 대답하기를, “두려워하지 말라. 이는 우리와 함께 있는 자들이 그들과 함께한 자들보다 더 많기 때문이라.” 하였더라.

And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.

17 그러고 나서 엘리사가 기도하여 말씀드리기를, “주여, 제가 당신께 간구하오니, 그가 볼 수 있도록 그의 두 눈을 열어 주소서.” 하였더라. 그러자 주께서 청년의 두 눈을 열어 주셨고, 그가 보았더니, 보라, 산이 엘리사 주위에 있는 불 말들과 불 병거들로 가득하였더라.

And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

18 그리고 그들이 그에게 내려왔을 때 엘리사가 주께 기도하여 말씀드리기를, “제가 당신께 간구하오니, 이 백성을 실명으로 쳐 주소서.” 하였더라. 그러자 그분께서 엘리사의 말에 따라 그들을 실명으로 치셨더라.

And when they came down to him, Elisha prayed unto the LORD, and said, Smite this people, I pray thee, with blindness. And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.

19 ¶ 그런 다음에 엘리사가 그들에게 말하기를, “이것은 그 길이 아니요, 이것은 그 도시도 아니니라. 나를 따르라. 그리하면 나는 너희가 찾는 그 사람에게로 너희를 데려가겠노라.” 하였더라. 그러나 그가 그들을 사마리아로 이끌었더라.

¶ And Elisha said unto them, This is not the way, neither is this the city: follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom ye seek. But he led them to Samaria.

20 그리고 그들이 사마리아 안으로 들어왔을 때 이러한 일이 있었으니, 엘리사가 말씀드리기를, “주여, 이 사람들의 눈을 열어 주시어 그들이 볼 수 있게 하옵소서.” 하였더라. 그러자 주께서 그들의 눈을 열어 주시어 그들이 보았더라. 그런데 보라, 그들이 사마리아 한복판에 있었더라.

And it came to pass, when they were come into Samaria, that Elisha said, LORD, open the eyes of these men, that they may see. And the LORD opened their eyes, and they saw; and, behold, they were in the midst of Samaria.

21 그리고 이스라엘 왕이 그들을 보았을 때 그가 엘리사에게 말하기를, “나의 아버지여, 제가 그들을 치리이까? 제가 그들을 치리이까?” 하였더라.

And the king of Israel said unto Elisha, when he saw them, My father, shall I smite them? shall I smite them?

22 그러자 그가 대답하기를, “당신은 그들을 치지 마소서. 당신은 당신의 칼과 당신의 활로 포로로 잡은 자들을 당신이 치고 싶으시니이까? 빵과 물을 그들 앞에 차리시어 그들이 먹고 마시게 하신 뒤 그들의 주인에게 가게 하소서.” 하였더라.

And he answered, Thou shalt not smite them: wouldest thou smite those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow? set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master.

23 그리하여 그가 그들을 위하여 성대한 상차림을 마련하였고 그들이 먹고 마셨을 때 그가 그들을 돌려보내서 그들이 그들의 주인에게 갔더라. 그렇게 하여 시리아의 부대들이 더 이상 이스라엘 영토 안으로 오지 못하였더라.

And he prepared great provision for them: and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. So the bands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel.

24 ¶ 그리고 이런 일이 있고 나서, 다음과 같은 일이 있었으니, 시리아 왕 벤하닷이 그의 모든 군대를 집합시켜 올라가서 사마리아를 포위하였더라.

¶ And it came to pass after this, that Benhadad king of Syria gathered all his host, and went up, and besieged Samaria.

25 그러자 사마리아에 심한 기근이 있었더라. 그리고 보라, 그들이 그곳을 포위하였으니, 마침내 나귀 한 마리의 머리가 은화 팔십 개에, 비둘기 똥 사분의 일 캅이 은화 다섯 개에 팔렸더라.

And there was a great famine in Samaria: and, behold, they besieged it, until an ass's head was sold for fourscore pieces of silver, and the fourth part of a cab of dove's dung for five pieces of silver.

26 그러다가 이스라엘 왕이 성벽 위를 지나다니는 동안 한 여자가 그에게 부르짖으며 말하기를, “오, 내 주 왕이여 도우소서.” 하였더라.

And as the king of Israel was passing by upon the wall, there cried a woman unto him, saying, Help, my lord, O king.

27 그러자 그가 말하기를, “주께서 그대를 돕지 아니하실진대 어디에서부터 내가 그대를 돕겠느냐? 곳간 마당에서 나오는 것이랴? 아니면 포도즙 틀에서 나오는 것이랴?” 하였더라.

And he said, If the LORD do not help thee, whence shall I help thee? out of the barnfloor, or out of the winepress?

28 그리고 왕이 그녀에게 말하기를, “무엇이 너를 고통스럽게 하느냐?” 하였더라. 그러자 그녀가 대답하였더라. “이 여자가 저에게 말하기를, ‘우리가 오늘 먹을 수 있도록 너의 아들을 달라. 그리하면 우리가 내일은 나의 아들을 먹으리라.’ 하였나이다.

And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, This woman said unto me, Give thy son, that we may eat him to day, and we will eat my son to morrow.

29 그렇게 하여 저희가 제 아들을 끓였고 그를 먹었나이다. 그러고 나서 제가 그녀에게 다음 날 말하기를, ‘우리가 그를 먹을 수 있도록 너의 아들을 달라.’ 하였는데 그녀가 자신의 아들을 숨겼나이다.”

So we boiled my son, and did eat him: and I said unto her on the next day, Give thy son, that we may eat him: and she hath hid her son.

30 ¶ 그러자 왕이 여자의 말들을 들었을 때 이러한 일이 있었으니, 그가 자기 옷을 찢었더라. 그리고 그가 성벽 위를 지나다니자, 백성이 바라보았는데, 보라, 그가 속에다 그의 맨살에 굵은 베를 입고 있었더라.

¶ And it came to pass, when the king heard the words of the woman, that he rent his clothes; and he passed by upon the wall, and the people looked, and, behold, he had sackcloth within upon his flesh.

31 그때 그가 말하기를, “만일 샤팟의 아들 엘리사의 머리가 이날 그에게 붙어 있다면 하나님께서 나에게 벌을 내리시고 또한 더 내리시기를 바라노라.” 하였더라.

Then he said, God do so and more also to me, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat shall stand on him this day.

32 그러나 엘리사는 그의 집 안에 앉아 있었고 장로들은 그의 곁에 앉아 있었더라. 그리고 왕이 그의 앞에서부터 한 남자를 보냈더라. 그러나 아직 그 전령이 그에게 오기도 전에 그가 장로들에게 말하기를, “너희는 이 살인자의 아들이 내 머리를 베어 내려고 사람을 보낸 것을 아느냐? 보라, 그 전령이 올 때 문을 닫고 문에서 그를 굳게 잡으라. 그의 주인의 두 발소리가 그의 뒤에 있지 아니하냐?” 하였더라.

But Elisha sat in his house, and the elders sat with him; and the king sent a man from before him: but ere the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, See ye how this son of a murderer hath sent to take away mine head? look, when the messenger cometh, shut the door, and hold him fast at the door: is not the sound of his master's feet behind him?

33 그리고 그가 아직 그들과 대화하고 있는 동안인데, 보라, 그 전령이 그에게 내려왔더라. 그리고 그가 말하기를, “보라, 이 악이 주로부터 비롯되었도다. 내가 주를 위하여 이 이상 무엇을 기다려야 하리요?” 하였더라.

And while he yet talked with them, behold, the messenger came down unto him: and he said, Behold, this evil is of the LORD; what should I wait for the LORD any longer?
