1 그때 나아맛족 조팔이 대답하여 이같이 말하였더라.
1 Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said,
2 “말들의 허다함에 대답이 없겠느냐? 또 수다로 가득한 사람의 정당함이 입증되겠느냐?
2 Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified?
3 너의 거짓말들이 사람들로 하여금 그들의 침묵을 지키게 하겠느냐? 또 네가 조롱할 때 너를 부끄럽게 할 사람이 아무도 없겠느냐?
3 Should thy lies make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man make thee ashamed?
4 이는 네가 말하기를, ‘제 교리는 순수하고 저는 당신의 눈들에 정결하나이다.’ 하였기 때문이라.
4 For thou hast said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in thine eyes.
5 그러나 오, 하나님께서 말씀하시고 너를 대적하여 그분의 입술을 여시기를 바라노라.
5 But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee;
6 그리고 그분께서 지혜의 비밀들을 너에게 보이시어 그것들이 지금 존재하는 것들의 두 배나 된다는 것을 보이시기를 바라노라! 그러므로 하나님께서는 너에게서 너의 죄악이 마땅히 받아야 할 것보다 덜 거두어 가신다는 것을 알라.
6 And that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to that which is! Know therefore that God exacteth of thee less than thine iniquity deserveth.
7 네가 살펴본다고 하나님을 찾아낼 수 있겠느냐? 네가 전능하신 분을 완벽하게 찾아낼 수 있겠느냐?
7 Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?
8 그것은 하늘만큼 높으니, 네가 무엇을 할 수 있겠느냐? 지옥보다도 더 깊으니, 네가 무엇을 알 수 있겠느냐?
8 It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know?
9 그것의 도량은 땅보다 더 길고 바다보다 더 넓으니라.
9 The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.
10 설령 그분께서 끊어 내시고 차단하시거나 혹은 한데 모으신다 해도 그때 누가 그분을 저지할 수 있느냐?
10 If he cut off, and shut up, or gather together, then who can hinder him?
11 이는 그분께서 헛된 사람들을 아시기 때문이라. 그분은 또한 사악함을 보고 계시느니라. 그렇다면 그분께서 그것을 숙고하지 아니하시겠느냐?
11 For he knoweth vain men: he seeth wickedness also; will he not then consider it?
12 이는 사람이 야생 새끼 수나귀처럼 태어날지라도 헛된 사람이 지혜로워지고자 하기 때문이라.
12 For vain man would be wise, though man be born like a wild ass's colt.
13 만일 네가 너의 마음을 예비하여 너의 두 손을 그분을 향하여 활짝 펴는데
13 If thou prepare thine heart, and stretch out thine hands toward him;
14 혹 너의 손안에 죄악이 있다면 그것을 멀리 치워 버리라. 그리하여 너의 장막들 안에 사악함이 거하지 않게 하라.
14 If iniquity be in thine hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles.
15 이는 그제야 너는 흠 없이 너의 얼굴을 들어 올릴 것이기 때문이라. 진정 너는 확고해질 것이요, 두려워하지 아니하리라.
15 For then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot; yea, thou shalt be stedfast, and shalt not fear:
16 이는 네가 너의 비극을 잊고, 그것을 흘러가 버리는 물들처럼 기억할 것이기 때문이라.
16 Because thou shalt forget thy misery, and remember it as waters that pass away:
17 그리고 너의 세월은 대낮보다 더 또렷하리라. 너는 빛을 발산하리라. 너는 아침같이 되리라.
17 And thine age shall be clearer than the noonday; thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning.
18 그리하여 너는 안정되리니 소망이 있는 까닭이라. 진정 너는 너의 주위를 팔 것이요, 너는 안전 가운데 너의 안식을 얻으리라.
18 And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig about thee, and thou shalt take thy rest in safety.
19 또한 너는 드러누울 것이요, 아무도 너를 무섭게 하지 못하리라. 진정 많은 이들이 너에게 탄원하리라.
19 Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall make thee afraid; yea, many shall make suit unto thee.
20 그러나 사악한 자들의 눈은 쇠할 것이요, 그들은 모면하지 못할 것이요, 그들의 소망은 숨을 거두는 것과 같으리라.”
20 But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and they shall not escape, and their hope shall be as the giving up of the ghost.
