1 그때 테만족 엘리파즈가 대답하여 이같이 말하였더라.
1 Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,
2 “지혜로운 사람이 헛된 지식을 발설하겠으며 그의 배를 동풍으로 채우겠느냐?
2 Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?
3 그가 무익한 수다로 논증하겠느냐? 아니면 그가 아무런 선을 행할 수 없는 이야기들을 하겠느냐?
3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?
4 진정, 네가 두려움을 던져 버리고 하나님 앞에서 기도를 억제하는도다.
4 Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.
5 이는 너의 입이 너의 죄악을 발설하고, 네가 간사한 자의 혀를 선택하기 때문이라.
5 For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.
6 너 자신의 입이 너를 정죄하나니, 내가 아니니라. 진정, 너 자신의 입술이 너를 대적하여 증언하는도다.
6 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.
7 네가 첫 번째로 태어난 사람이냐? 아니면 네가 언덕들이 있기 전에 지어졌느냐?
7 Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?
8 네가 하나님의 비밀을 들은 적이 있느냐? 그리하여 네가 너 자신에게만 지혜를 국한하느냐?
8 Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?
9 우리가 모르는 무엇을 너는 알고 있느냐? 우리 안에 없는 무엇을 너는 이해하고 있느냐?
9 What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?
10 우리에게는 백발이 된 자도, 너의 아버지보다 훨씬 연장자인 아주 나이 많은 사람들도 있도다.
10 With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.
11 하나님의 위안들이 너에게 작은 것이냐? 너에게 어떤 비밀스러운 것이 있느냐?
11 Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?
12 어찌하여 너의 마음이 너를 멀리 실어 가느냐? 또 무엇을 너의 두 눈이 눈감아 주기에
12 Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,
13 네가 너의 영으로 하여금 하나님을 대적하도록 돌이키며, 너의 입에서 그러한 말들이 나가게 하느냐?
13 That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?
14 사람이 무엇이기에 그가 정결해지겠느냐? 또 여자에게서 태어난 자가 무엇이기에 그가 의로워지겠느냐?
14 What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
15 보라, 그분은 자신의 성도들에게 전혀 신뢰를 두지 아니하시느니라. 진정, 하늘들도 그분의 목전에 깨끗하지 아니하니라.
15 Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.
16 하물며 죄악을 물처럼 마시는 사람은 얼마나 더 가증하고 추악하냐?
16 How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?
17 내가 너에게 보여주겠나니, 나의 말을 들으라. 그리고 내가 본 것을 내가 선언하겠노라.
17 I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;
18 지혜로운 사람들이 그들의 조상들로부터 내려오는 것을 알렸고 그것을 숨기지 아니하였도다.
18 Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:
19 땅은 그들에게만 주어졌으며, 어떤 타국인도 그들 가운데로 지나가지 아니하였도다.
19 Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.
20 사악한 사람은 그의 모든 날들 동안 아픔으로 진통을 치르나니, 연수들이 압제자에게 숨겨져 있도다.
20 The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.
21 무시무시한 소리가 그의 두 귀에 있도다. 번영 속에서 멸망시키는 자가 그의 위에 임하리라.
21 A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.
22 그는 자신이 어둠에서 되돌아올 것을 믿지 아니하나니, 그는 칼에게 기다려지는 존재로다.
22 He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.
23 그는 빵으로 인하여 널리 방황하며 말하기를, ‘그것이 어디 있느냐?’ 하나니, 그가 어둠의 날이 그의 손에 준비되어 있는 것을 아는도다.
23 He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
24 곤경과 극심한 고통이 그를 무섭게 만들리라. 그들이 전투 태세를 갖춘 왕같이 그를 대적하여 승리하리라.
24 Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.
25 이는 그가 하나님을 대적하여 그의 손을 활짝 폈고, 전능하신 분을 대적하여 자신을 강화시켰기 때문이라.
25 For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.
26 그가 그분께 달려드나니, 곧 그분의 목과 그분의 원형 방패들의 두꺼운 양각 장식들에 달려드느니라.
26 He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:
27 이는 그가 그의 얼굴을 자신의 지방으로 덮고 그의 옆구리 살들을 지방으로 된 겹살들로 만드는 까닭이라.
27 Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.
28 그리고 그가 황량한 도시들 안과 사람이 아무도 거주하지 않는 집들, 곧 이미 무더기들이 되기 직전인 곳들 안에서 거하느니라.
28 And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.
29 그는 부유해지지 못할 것이요, 그의 재물도 지속되지 못할 것이요, 그는 땅 위에서 재물의 완전함을 연장하지도 못할 것이라.
29 He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.
30 그가 어둠에서 떠나지 못할 것이요, 불꽃이 그의 가지들을 말려 버릴 것이요, 그분의 입에서 나오는 호흡에 의하여 그가 떠나가리라.
30 He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
31 속임을 당하는 자가 헛된 것을 신뢰하지 않게 하라. 이는 헛된 것이 그의 삯이 될 것이기 때문이라.
31 Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.
32 그의 때가 되기 전에 그것이 이룩될 것이요, 그의 가지는 푸르지 아니하리라.
32 It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.
33 그는 포도나무처럼, 익지 아니한 그의 포도를 흔들어 떨굴 것이요, 올리브나무처럼 그의 꽃을 던져 떨굴 것이라.
33 He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.
34 이는 위선자들의 회중이 황량해질 것이요, 불이 뇌물을 수수하는 자의 장막들을 사를 것이기 때문이라.
34 For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.
35 그들은 해로움을 잉태하여 헛된 것을 출산하나니, 그들의 배는 속임수를 예비하는도다.”
35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
