1 이후에 이러한 일이 있었으니, 그분께서 안식일에 빵을 드시려고 바리새파 사람들의 우두머리들 중 한 명의 집 안으로 들어가시는 동안 그들이 그분을 지켜보았더라.

And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.

2 그런데 보라, 수종증이 있던 어떤 남자 한 명이 그분 앞에 있었더라.

And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.

3 그러자 예수님께서 율법사들과 바리새파 사람들에게 대답하며 일러 말씀하시기를, “안식일에 치유하는 것이 합법적이냐?” 하셨느니라.

And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?

4 이에 그들이 자신들의 침묵을 지켰더라. 그러자 그분께서 그를 데리고 오셨으며 그를 치유해 주시고는 그를 가게 하셨더라.

And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;

5 그러고는 그들에게 대응하며 말씀하시기를, “너희 중 누가 나귀나 소가 어떤 구렁에 빠졌는데 안식일에 즉각 그를 꺼내주지 아니하겠느냐?” 하셨느니라.

And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?

6 그러자 그들은 이것들에 대하여 그분께 다시 응답할 수 없었더라.

And they could not answer him again to these things.

7 ¶ 이후에 그분께서 그들이 으뜸가는 좌석들을 골라내는 것을 유의하셨을 때, 친히 초대받은 자들에게 한 가지 비유를 내놓으시면서 그들에게 이같이 말씀하셨느니라.

¶ And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them,

8 “네가 어떤 사람에게서 결혼식에 초대를 받았을 때는 가장 높은 좌석에 앉지 말라. 너보다 더 존귀한 사람이 그에게서 초대받았을 때에

When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;

9 너와 그를 초대한 자가 너에게 와서 말하기를, ‘이 사람에게 자리를 내주시오.’ 하여, 네가 가장 낮은 좌석을 취하는 수치로 시작하지 않도록 하려 함이라.

And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.

10 그러나 네가 초대받을 때 가서 가장 낮은 좌석에 앉으라. 이는 너를 초대한 자가 올 때 그가 너에게 말하기를, ‘친구여, 더 높이 올라오라.’ 하게 하려는 것이라. 그때 너는 너와 함께 앉아 식사하는 자들의 면전에서 존중을 받으리라.

But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.

11 이는 누구든지 스스로를 크게 높이는 자는 낮춰질 것이요, 스스로를 겸손하게 하는 자는 크게 높여질 것이기 때문이라.”

For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

12 ¶ 그때 그분께서 또한 자신을 초대한 자에게 이같이 말씀하셨느니라. “네가 정찬이나 만찬을 마련하면, 너의 친구들이나 너의 형제들도 부르지 말고, 너의 혈족들이나 너의 부유한 이웃들도 부르지 말라. 이는 그들도 너를 다시 초대하여 너에게 보답하지 않도록 하려 함이라.

¶ Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.

13 다만 네가 잔치를 마련할 때면 가난한 자들, 불구자들, 절뚝거리는 자들, 눈먼 자들을 부르라.

But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:

14 그리하면 네가 복을 받으리라. 이는 그들이 너에게 보답할 수 없기에 네가 의인들의 부활 때에 보답받을 것이기 때문이라.”

And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

15 ¶ 이에 그분과 함께 앉아 식사하고 있던 자들 중 하나가 이런 것들을 듣자 그가 그분께 말씀드리기를, “하나님의 왕국에서 빵을 먹을 자는 복되나이다.” 하였더라.

¶ And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.

16 그때 그분께서 그에게 이같이 말씀하셨느니라. “어떤 사람 한 명이 성대한 만찬을 마련하고 많은 이들을 초대하였느니라.

Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:

17 그러고는 만찬 시간에 자신의 종을 보내서 초대받은 자들에게 ‘오라. 이는 모든 것들이 지금 준비되었기 때문이라.’ 하고 말하게 하였느니라.

And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.

18 그런데 그들 모두가 한마음으로 변명을 대기 시작하였느니라. 첫 번째 사람은 그에게 말하기를, ‘제가 경지를 한 필 구입하였으므로 제가 가서 그것을 반드시 보아야 할 필요가 있나이다. 제가 당신에게 간구하노니, 제 사정을 양해해 주소서.’ 하였더라.

And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.

19 다음으로 또 다른 이가 말하기를, ‘제가 다섯 쌍의 소들을 샀으니, 제가 그들을 확인해 보러 가나이다. 제가 당신에게 간구하노니, 제 사정을 양해해 주소서.’ 하였더라.

And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.

20 다음으로 또 다른 이가 말하기를, ‘제가 한 아내와 혼인을 하였으니, 그러므로 제가 갈 수 없나이다.’ 하였더라.

And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.

21 그렇게 하여 그 종이 와서 자신의 소유주에게 이 일들을 알렸느니라. 그때 그 집의 주인이 진노하여 자신의 종에게 말하기를, ‘속히 도시의 거리들과 골목들로 나가서 가난한 자들과 불구자들과 절뚝이는 자들과 눈먼 자들을 여기로 데려오라.’ 하였느니라.

So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.

22 이윽고 그 종이 말하기를, ‘주여, 당신께서 명령하신 대로 이루어졌나이다. 그런데 아직도 좌석이 있나이다.’ 하였느니라.

And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.

23 그러자 그 소유주가 그 종에게 이같이 말하였느니라. ‘대로들과 울타리들로 나가서 나의 집이 채워지도록 억지로라도 그들을 들어오게 하라.

And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.

24 이는 내가 너희에게, ‘초대받은 그 사람들 중에서는 아무도 내 만찬을 맛보지 못하리라.’ 하고 말하기 때문이라.’”

For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

25 ¶ 이후에 수많은 무리들이 그분과 함께 갔는데 그분께서 돌아서시어 그들에게 이같이 말씀하셨느니라.

¶ And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,

26 “누구든 나에게 오면서도 자기 아버지와 어머니와 아내와 자식들과 형제들과 자매들과 진정 자기 자신의 생명까지도 증오하지 않는다면, 그는 나의 제자가 될 수 없느니라.

If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

27 그리고 누구든지 자기 십자가를 지지 않고 나를 따라오는 자는 나의 제자가 될 수 없느니라.

And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

28 그러므로 너희 중에 누가 망대를 건설하려고 작정하면, 먼저 앉아서, 자신이 그것을 완공하기에 충분히 가지고 있는지 그 비용을 계산해 보지 않겠느냐?

For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?

29 이는 그가 기초를 놓은 뒤에 그것을 완공하지 못하여, 그것을 보는 자들 모두가 그를 비웃기 시작하며

Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,

30 말하기를, ‘이 사람이 공사를 착수하기는 하였으나 완공하지 못하였도다.’ 하지 않도록 하려 함이라.

Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

31 또한 어느 왕이 또 다른 왕을 대적하여 전쟁을 하려고 하면서 먼저 앉아 이만 명을 거느리고 오는 그를 자신이 일만 명으로 대적할 수 있는지 심사숙고해 보지 않겠느냐?

Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?

32 그렇지 않다면, 아직 다른 왕이 매우 멀리 떨어져 있을 때 그는 사절을 보내서 화친을 위한 조건들을 요청하리라.

Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.

33 그렇기에 누구든지 이와 마찬가지로 너희 중에 자신이 소유한 것을 모두 버리지 아니하는 자는 나의 제자가 될 수 없느니라.

So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

34 ¶ 소금은 좋은 것이라. 그러나 만일 소금이 그의 맛을 잃어버린다면, 그것이 무엇으로 맛을 내게 되겠느냐?

¶ Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?

35 그것은 토지에도 적합하지 않고 거름 더미에조차 적합하지 아니하여 사람들이 그것을 내버릴 뿐이라. 들을 귀들이 있는 자, 그는 들을지어다.”

It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
