1 그러고 나서 그 당시에 이러한 일이 있었으니, 온 세상이 조세 등록이 되도록 카이사르 아우구스투스로부터 칙령이 포고되었더라.

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

2 (그리고 이런 조세 등록은 키레니우스가 시리아의 총독이었을 때 처음 제정된 것이었더라.)

(And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

3 그러자 모두가 조세 등록을 받기 위하여 갔으니, 각자 자기 자신의 도시로 향하였더라.

And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

4 그리고 요셉 또한 나사렛 도시에서 나와서 갈릴리로부터 유대로 올라갔으며 베들레헴이라 불리는 다윗의 도시에 이르렀으니, (이는 그가 다윗의 집과 혈통에 속하였기 때문이라.)

And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

5 그의 정혼한 아내 마리아가 아이를 가져 배가 부른 채로 조세 등록을 받기 위해 함께하였더라.

To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

6 그런데 그 일이 이렇게 되었으니, 그들이 거기에 있는 동안 그녀가 해산해야 하는 날들이 다 차 버렸더라.

And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

7 그리하여 그녀가 자신의 첫아들을 낳았고 그를 포대기로 감쌌으며 그를 구유에 뉘었더라. 이는 여관에 그들을 위한 방이 전혀 없었기 때문이라.

And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

8 그리고 바로 그 지방에는 밤에 자신들의 양 떼에 대한 파수를 지키며 들에 거하고 있는 목자들이 있었더라.

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9 그리고 보라, 주의 천사가 그들에게 다가왔고 주의 영광이 그들 주위를 비추었으니, 그들이 심히 무서워하였더라.

And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

10 그러자 그 천사가 그들에게 이같이 말하였더라. “보라, 내가 너희에게 크나큰 즐거움의 좋은 소식들을 가져오나니, 두려워하지 말라. 이 즐거움은 모든 백성에게 임하리라.

And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11 이는 다윗의 도시에서 이날 한 구원자가 너희에게 태어나셨기 때문이라. 그분은 주이신 그리스도시니라.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

12 그리고 이것이 너희에게 표적이 되리라. 너희는 포대기에 싸인 채 구유에 누워 있는 그 아기를 발견하리라.”

And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

13 그러자 갑자기 하늘에 있는 군대 무리가 그 천사와 함께 있어 하나님을 찬송하며 이같이 말하였더라.

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

14 “가장 높은 곳에는 하나님께 영광이요, 지상에는 사람들을 향한 화평과 선한 뜻이로다.”

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

15 그러자 이러한 일이 있었으니, 천사들이 그들을 떠나 하늘 속으로 올라가는 동안 목자들이 서로 말하기를, “우리가 지금 베들레헴에까지 가서, 일어난 이 일, 곧 주께서 우리에게 알게 하신 일을 보자.” 하였더라.

And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

16 그러자 그들이 서둘러 가서 마리아와 요셉과, 구유에 누워 있는 그 아기를 발견하였더라.

And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

17 그리고 그들이 그것을 보자 이 아이에 관하여 그들에게 전해진 그 말을 널리 알려지게 하였더라.

And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

18 그러자 그것을 들은 자들 모두가 목자들에 의하여 자신들에게 전해진 그것들을 경이로워하였더라.

And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

19 다만 마리아는 이 모든 일들을 간직했고 그것들을 그녀의 마음속에 곰곰이 생각하였더라.

But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

20 이윽고 목자들은 그들에게 전해진 바대로 그들이 듣고 본 그 모든 것들로 인하여 하나님께 영광을 돌리고 찬송하면서 되돌아갔더라.

And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

21 이후에 그 아이에게 할례를 행하기 위한 팔 일이 다 찼을 때 그분의 이름은 예수라 불렸더라. 그것은 그분께서 태 속에 임신되기 이전에 천사에 의하여 그렇게 지어진 이름이었더라.

And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

22 그리고 모세의 율법에 따른 그녀의 정화 의식의 날들이 다 차자 그들은 그분을 주께 드리기 위하여 그분을 예루살렘으로 데리고 갔더라.

And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;

23 (주의 율법 안에 기록된 바와 같으니, “태를 여는 모든 남성은 저마다 주께 거룩한 자라 불리리라.” 하였더라.)

(As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)

24 이에 주의 율법 안에 말씀된 것에 따라 한 쌍의 산비둘기 혹은 두 마리의 새끼 집비둘기를 희생 제물로 바치려 하였더라.

And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

25 그리고 보라, 이름이 시므온인 남자가 예루살렘에 있었더라. 그리고 바로 그 남자는 정의롭고 독실하여 이스라엘의 위안을 기다리고 있었으며 성령님께서 그 위에 계셨더라.

And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.

26 또한 그가 주의 그리스도를 보기 전에는 그가 죽음을 보지 아니하리라는 것이 성령님을 통하여 그에게 계시되었더라.

And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

27 그런즉 그가 성령에 의하여 성전으로 들어왔더라. 그리고 그 양친이 아이를 위한 율법의 관례에 따라 행하려고 그 아이 예수님을 데리고 오자

And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,

28 그때 그가 아이를 자신의 두 팔로 들어 올리고 하나님을 찬양하며 이같이 말하였더라.

Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,

29 “주여, 이제 당신의 말씀대로 당신의 종이 평안 가운데 떠나도록 친히 허락하여 주소서.

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:

30 이는 내 두 눈이 당신의 구원을 보았기 때문이니이다.

For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,

31 그 구원은 당신께서 모든 백성의 면전에서 예비하신 것이요,

Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;

32 이방인들에게 빛을 주는 빛이요, 당신의 백성 이스라엘의 영광이니이다.”

A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

33 그러자 요셉과 아이의 어머니는 그에 의하여 언급된 그러한 것들을 놀라워하였더라.

And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.

34 그러고 나서 시므온이 그들을 축복했고 아이의 어머니인 마리아에게 이같이 말하였더라. “보라, 이 아이가 이스라엘의 많은 이들의 넘어짐과 다시 일어남을 위하여 세워졌노라. 또한 대적하여 언급될 표적을 위해서도 세워졌노라.

And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;

35 (진정, 검이 너 자신의 혼까지도 꿰뚫으리라.) 이는 많은 이들의 마음의 생각들이 드러나게 하려 함이라.”

(Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

36 그리고 아셀1 지파에 속하고 파누엘의 딸이며 여예언자인 안나라는 이가 있었더라. 그녀는 나이가 대단히 많았으니, 자신의 처녀 때 이후로 한 남편과 칠 년을 살았다가

And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity;

37 그녀는 약 팔십사 년을 과부로 있으면서 성전을 떠나지 아니하고 다만 밤낮 금식들과 기도들로 하나님을 섬겼더라.

And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

38 그런데 마침 그때에 그녀가 나아와서 마찬가지로 주께 감사들을 드렸으며 예루살렘에서 구속을 고대하는 모든 자들에게 그분에 관하여 말하였더라.

And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

39 그리하여 그들이 주의 율법에 따라 모든 것들을 수행하자 그들은 갈릴리로 다시 되돌아와서 그들 자신의 도시인 나사렛에 이르렀더라.

And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.

40 그러자 그 아이가 자랐으며, 영 안에서 강건해졌고, 지혜로 충만하게 되었더라. 또한 하나님의 은혜가 그분 위에 있었더라.

And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.

41 이때 그분의 양친은 매년 유월절에 예루살렘으로 갔더라.

Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.

42 그리고 그분께서 열두 살이 되셨을 때 그들은 그 명절의 관례를 따라 예루살렘으로 올라갔더라.

And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.

43 그리하여 그들이 그날들을 채운 후 그들이 되돌아가는 동안에 아이 예수님께서 예루살렘에 남아서 머무셨더라. 그런데 요셉과 그분의 어머니는 그것에 관하여 몰랐더라.

And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.

44 다만 그들은 그분이 일행 중에 있을 것이라고 생각하면서 하룻길의 여정을 갔더라. 이후에 그들이 자신들의 육친과 지인들 가운데서 그분을 찾았더라.

But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.

45 그런데 그들이 그분을 발견하지 못하자 그들은 그분을 찾으면서 예루살렘으로 다시 되돌아갔더라.

And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.

46 그리고 이러한 일이 있었으니, 삼 일 후에 그들이 그분께서 박사들 한가운데서 성전 안에 앉아 그들의 말을 듣기도 하며 그들에게 질문들을 묻기도 하시는 것을 발견하였더라.

And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.

47 그리고 그분의 말을 들은 자들 모두가 그분의 명철과 답변들에 깜짝 놀랐더라.

And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.

48 그리하여 그들이 그분을 보았을 때 그들은 놀랐더라. 이에 그분의 어머니가 그분께 말하기를, “아들아, 어찌하여 네가 우리를 이와 같이 다루었느냐? 보라, 너의 아버지와 내가 슬퍼하며 너를 찾았노라.” 하였더라.

And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

49 그러자 그분께서 그들에게 말씀하시기를, “당신들께서 저를 찾으셨다니 어찌 된 일입니까? 당신들께서는 제가 저의 아버지의 임무를 수행해야만 하는 것을 알아차리지 못하셨나이까?” 하셨느니라.

And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?

50 그런데 그들은 그분께서 그들에게 이야기하신 그 말씀을 이해하지 못하였더라.

And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.

51 그런 다음에 그분께서 그들과 함께 내려 가셔서 나사렛에 이르셨으며 그들에게 복종하셨더라. 그러나 그분의 어머니는 이 모든 말씀들을 그녀의 마음속에 간직하였더라.

And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

52 이후에 예수님께서는 지혜와 키가 자라셨으며 하나님과 사람에게서 더욱더 호의를 받으셨더라.

And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
