1 이후에 주께서 여호수아에게 이같이 말씀하셨느니라. “너는 두려워하지 말고 좌절하지도 말라. 너와 함께 전쟁할 모든 백성을 데리고 일어나서 아이로 올라가라. 보라, 내가 아이의 왕과 그의 백성과 그의 도시와 그의 지역을 너의 손안에 주었도다.

And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai: see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land:

2 그런즉 너는 네가 예리코와 그녀의 왕에게 행한 것같이 아이와 그녀의 왕에게 행할지니라. 너희는 오직 그곳의 노획물과 그곳의 가축들만을 전리품으로 너희 자신에게 취할지니라. 너는 도시를 치기 위한 매복병을 그곳의 뒤편에 둘지니라.”

And thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto Jericho and her king: only the spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall ye take for a prey unto yourselves: lay thee an ambush for the city behind it.

3 ¶ 그렇게 하여 여호수아와, 전쟁할 모든 백성이 일어나 아이를 대적하여 올라갔더라. 그리고 여호수아가 막강한 용사 삼만 명을 선택하여 밤에 그들을 내보냈더라.

¶ So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.

4 그러면서 그가 그들에게 명령하며 이같이 말하였더라. “보라, 너희는 그 도시 맞은편, 곧 도시 뒤편에서 숨어 기다릴지니라. 도시에서 너무 멀리 가지 말고 다만 너희는 모두 대기하고 있으라.

And he commanded them, saying, Behold, ye shall lie in wait against the city, even behind the city: go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready:

5 그리하면 나는 나와 함께한 모든 백성과 더불어 도시에 접근하겠노라. 그리하면 그들이 처음과 같이 우리를 대적하여 나올 때 이러한 일이 있으리니, 우리가 그들 앞에서 도망하되

And I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city: and it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them,

6 (이는 그들이 우리를 따라 나올 것이기 때문이라.) 우리가 그들을 도시에서 유인해 낼 때까지 도망하겠노라. 이는 그들이 말하기를, ‘저들이 처음과 같이 우리 앞에서 도망하는도다.’ 할 것이기 때문이라. 그러므로 우리가 그들 앞에서 도망하겠노라.

(For they will come out after us) till we have drawn them from the city; for they will say, They flee before us, as at the first: therefore we will flee before them.

7 그때 너희는 매복지에서 일어나 그 도시를 장악할지니라. 이는 주 너희 하나님께서 그것을 너희 손안에 넘기실 것이기 때문이라.

Then ye shall rise up from the ambush, and seize upon the city: for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand.

8 그리고 너희가 그 도시를 점령하였을 때 이러한 일이 일어날지니, 너희는 도시에 불을 지를지니라. 주의 명령에 따라 너희가 행할지니라. 보라, 내가 너희에게 명령하였노라.”

And it shall be, when ye have taken the city, that ye shall set the city on fire: according to the commandment of the LORD shall ye do. See, I have commanded you.

9 ¶ 그러므로 여호수아가 그들을 내보냈더라. 그러자 그들이 가서 매복지에 숨어 벧엘과 아이 사이인 아이의 서편에 거하였더라. 그러나 여호수아는 그 밤에 백성 가운데 묵었더라.

¶ Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in ambush, and abode between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people.

10 이윽고 여호수아가 아침에 일찍 일어나 백성을 계수하고 올라갔으니, 그와 이스라엘의 장로들이 백성 앞에서 아이로 올라갔더라.

And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.

11 그리고 모든 백성, 곧 그와 함께 있으며 전쟁할 백성이 올라가서 가까이 다가가 그 도시 앞에 도달하였고 아이의 북편에 진을 쳤더라. 이때 그들과 아이 사이에는 골짜기가 있었더라.

And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between them and Ai.

12 그러고 나서 그는 약 오천 명의 남자들을 뽑았고 도시의 서쪽 측면인 벧엘과 아이 사이에 있는 매복지에 그들을 배치하여 숨어 있게 하였더라.

And he took about five thousand men, and set them to lie in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city.

13 그리하여 그들이 백성, 곧 도시의 북쪽에 있던 군대 전체를 배치하고 그들의 복병들을 도시의 서쪽에 배치하였을 때, 여호수아가 그날 밤 골짜기 한가운데로 들어갔더라.

And when they had set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.

14 ¶ 이윽고 아이 왕이 그것을 보았을 때 이러한 일이 있었으니, 그들이 서둘러 일찍 일어났고 그 도시의 사람들, 곧 그와 그의 모든 백성이 어느 지정된 시간에 이스라엘을 대적하여 전투하러 평야 앞에 나갔더라. 그러나 그는 도시 뒤편에 자신을 대적하여 매복 중인 복병들이 있다는 것을 몰랐더라.

¶ And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he wist not that there were liers in ambush against him behind the city.

15 그리고 여호수아와 온 이스라엘은 마치 자신들이 그들 앞에서 패한 것처럼 하며 광야 길로 도망하였더라.

And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.

16 그러자 아이에 있던 모든 백성이 그들을 추격하도록 함께 부름을 받았더라. 그리하여 그들이 여호수아를 추격하였고 도시에서 유인되어 떠났더라.

And all the people that were in Ai were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.

17 그런즉 아이나 벧엘에서 이스라엘을 따라 나가지 아니한 사람은 한 명도 남지 않았더라. 그리고 그들은 도시를 열어 둔 채 이스라엘을 추격하였더라.

And there was not a man left in Ai or Bethel, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.

18 이윽고 주께서 여호수아에게 말씀하시기를, “너의 손에 들린 창을 아이를 향하여 뻗으라. 이는 내가 그것을 너의 손안에 넘길 것이기 때문이라.” 하셨느니라. 이에 여호수아는 자기가 손에 가지고 있던 창을 그 도시를 향하여 뻗었더라.

And the LORD said unto Joshua, Stretch out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city.

19 그러자 그 매복병들이 그들의 위치에서 속히 일어났으니, 여호수아가 자신의 손을 뻗자마자 그들이 달려갔더라. 이에 그들이 그 도시 안으로 진입하여 그것을 점령하고 서둘러 그 도시에 불을 질렀더라.

And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hasted and set the city on fire.

20 그러자 아이 사람들이 자신들의 뒤를 바라보았을 때, 보라, 그들은 도시의 연기가 하늘까지 위로 올라가는 것을 보았더라. 이에 그들은 이 길이나 저 길로 도망할 기력을 잃었더라. 그리고 광야로 도망치던 백성은 뒤로 돌이켜 추격자들을 향하였더라.

And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.

21 그런즉 매복병들이 그 도시를 점령한 것과 그 도시의 연기가 올라가는 것을 여호수아와 온 이스라엘이 보자 그때 그들은 다시 돌이켜 아이 사람들을 살해하였더라.

And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai.

22 그리고 다른 이들도 도시에서 쏟아져 나와 그들을 대적하였더라. 그렇게 하여 그들은 이스라엘의 한가운데 있게 되어 일부는 이편에, 일부는 저편에 있었더라. 그런 다음에 이스라엘이 그들을 쳤으니, 이스라엘은 그들 중 아무도 남기거나 탈출하게 두지 아니하였더라.

And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.

23 이윽고 이스라엘이 아이의 왕을 생포하였으니, 그를 여호수아에게로 데려왔더라.

And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua.

24 그리고 이스라엘이 자신들이 그들을 뒤쫓던 광야 가운데서 아이의 모든 거주자들을 전장에서 살해하는 것을 끝마쳤을 때, 곧 그들 모두가 칼날에 쓰러져 마침내 그들이 진멸되었을 때 이러한 일이 있었으니, 모든 이스라엘인들이 아이로 되돌아가서 그곳을 칼날로 쳤더라.

And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.

25 그리하여 이와 같은 일이 있었으니, 그날 쓰러진 모든 자들이 남자들과 여자들 모두 일만 이천 명이었는데, 바로 아이 사람들 모두였더라.

And so it was, that all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai.

26 이는 여호수아가 자신이 아이의 모든 거주자들을 모조리 멸할 때까지 자신이 창을 뻗은 자기 손을 도로 거두지 아니하였기 때문이라.

For Joshua drew not his hand back, wherewith he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.

27 이스라엘은 그분께서 여호수아에게 명령하신 주의 말씀대로 오직 그 도시의 가축들과 노획물만을 전리품으로 자신들에게 취하였더라.

Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the LORD which he commanded Joshua.

28 그리하여 여호수아가 아이를 불태웠고 그곳을 영원토록 무더기로, 곧 황량함으로 만들었으니, 오늘날까지 이르니라.

And Joshua burnt Ai, and made it an heap for ever, even a desolation unto this day.

29 이후에 그가 아이의 왕을 저녁 무렵까지 나무에 매달았더라. 이윽고 해가 넘어가자마자 여호수아는 그들에게 나무에서 그의 사체를 내리고 그것을 그 도시의 성문 진입로에 던진 다음 그 위에 돌들로 커다란 무더기를 쌓아 올리라고 명령하였으니, 그것이 오늘날까지 남아 있느니라.

And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise thereon a great heap of stones, that remaineth unto this day.

30 ¶ 그때 여호수아가 에발산 속에서 이스라엘의 주 하나님께 제단 하나를 쌓았으니,

¶ Then Joshua built an altar unto the LORD God of Israel in mount Ebal,

31 주의 종 모세가 이스라엘 자녀들에게 명령한 대로, 곧 모세의 율법 책 안에 그것이 기록된 대로 아무도 그 위에 어떠한 철을 들어 올리지 않은 통으로 된 돌들로 이루어진 제단이더라. 그런즉 그들이 주께 번제물들을 그 위에 바쳤으며 화평 제물들을 희생 제물로 바쳤더라.

As Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt offerings unto the LORD, and sacrificed peace offerings.

32 ¶ 그리고 그가 거기서 돌들 위에 모세의 율법의 사본 하나를 기록하였는데 그가 이스라엘 자녀들의 면전에서 그 사본을 기록하였더라.

¶ And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.

33 그리하여 온 이스라엘과 그들의 장로들과 관원들과 그들의 판관들이 제사장들, 곧 주의 언약궤를 짊어진 레위인들 앞에서 법궤의 이편과 저편에 섰으니, 타국인도 그들 사이에서 태어난 자처럼 섰더라. 그들의 절반은 그리심산 맞은편에, 그들의 절반은 에발산 맞은편에 섰더라. 주의 종 모세가 그들이 이스라엘 백성을 축복해야 한다고 미리 명령한 대로였더라.

And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount Gerizim, and half of them over against mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel.

34 그러고 난 후에 그가 율법 책 안에 기록된 모든 것에 따라 율법의 모든 말씀들, 곧 복들과 저주들을 낭독하였더라.

And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law.

35 모세가 명령한 모든 것 중 여호수아가 이스라엘의 온 회중과, 여자들과 어린것들과, 그들 가운데 친교가 있던 타국인들 앞에서 낭독하지 아니한 말씀이 하나도 없었더라.

There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.
