1 그때 이스라엘 자녀들, 곧 회중 전체가 첫째 달에 진의 사막으로 들어갔더라. 그리고 백성이 카데시 가운데 거하였는데 미리암이 거기서 죽어 그곳에서 장사되었더라.
1 Then came the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, into the desert of Zin in the first month: and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.
2 이후에 회중을 위한 물이 없었더라. 이에 그들이 모세를 대적하고 아론을 대적하여 자신들끼리 함께 모였더라.
2 And there was no water for the congregation: and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.
3 그리고 백성이 모세를 힐책하며 이같이 일러 말하였더라. “우리 형제들이 주 앞에서 죽었을 때 하나님께서 우리도 죽게 하셨더라면 좋았으리라!
3 And the people chode with Moses, and spake, saying, Would God that we had died when our brethren died before the LORD!
4 그런즉 어찌하여 너희가 주의 회중을 이 광야로 데리고 들어와서 우리와 우리의 가축들을 이곳에서 죽게 하느냐?
4 And why have ye brought up the congregation of the LORD into this wilderness, that we and our cattle should die there?
5 또 어찌 너희는 우리를 이집트에서 나오게 하여 우리를 이 악한 장소로 데리고 들어왔느냐? 이곳은 씨를 위한 장소도, 무화과들을 위한 장소도, 포도나무들을 위한 장소도, 석류들을 위한 장소도 아니라. 또한 거기에는 마실 물이 조금도 없도다.”
5 And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.
6 그러자 모세와 아론이 집회 앞을 떠나 회중의 성막 문에 이르렀으니, 그들이 자신들의 얼굴을 대고 엎드렸더라. 이에 주의 영광이 그들에게 나타났더라.
6 And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they fell upon their faces: and the glory of the LORD appeared unto them.
7 ¶ 이어서 주께서 모세에게 이같이 일러 말씀하셨느니라.
7 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
8 “너, 곧 너와 너의 형제 아론은 막대기를 가지고 집회를 한데 모으라. 그러고 나서 너희는 그들의 눈앞에서 반석에게 말하라. 그리하면 그것이 그의 물을 내어 주리니, 너는 그들에게 반석에서 물을 생성해 내리라. 그렇게 하여 너는 회중과 그들의 짐승들에게 마실 것을 주리라.”
8 Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.
9 그러자 모세가 그분께서 자신에게 명령하신 대로 주 앞에서 막대기를 취하였더라.
9 And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him.
10 그러고 나서 모세와 아론이 반석 앞으로 회중을 한데 모았더라. 그러고는 모세가 그들에게 말하기를, “너희 반역자들아, 이제 들으라. 우리가 기어코 너희에게 이 반석에서 물을 내어야만 하겠느냐?” 하였더라.
10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?
11 그런 다음에 모세가 자기 손을 들어 올렸으니, 그가 자신의 막대기로 반석을 두 번 쳤더라. 그러자 물이 풍부하게 나왔고 회중이 마셨으며 그들의 짐승들도 마셨더라.
11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.
12 ¶ 이에 주께서 모세와 아론에게 이르시기를, “너희가 나를 믿지 않아 이스라엘 자녀들의 눈에서 나를 거룩하게 구별하지 아니하였도다. 그러므로 너희는 내가 이 회중에게 준 지역으로 그들을 데리고 들어가지 못하리라.” 하셨느니라.
12 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.
13 이것이 므리바의 물이라. 이는 이스라엘 자녀들이 주와 분쟁하였고, 그분께서 그들 가운데서 거룩하게 구별되신 까닭이라.
13 This is the water of Meribah; because the children of Israel strove with the LORD, and he was sanctified in them.
14 ¶ 이후에 모세가 카데시에서 에돔 왕에게 전령들을 보냈더라. “당신의 형제 이스라엘이 이와 같이 말하노라. ‘당신은 우리가 당면했던 모든 고역을 아노니,
14 ¶ And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom, Thus saith thy brother Israel, Thou knowest all the travail that hath befallen us:
15 어떻게 우리 조상들이 이집트로 내려갔는지와 우리가 이집트에서 오랜 시간 동안 거하였다는 것과 이집트인들이 우리와 우리 조상들을 핍박하였다는 것이라.
15 How our fathers went down into Egypt, and we have dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians vexed us, and our fathers:
16 그런데 우리가 주께 부르짖었을 때 그분께서 우리의 음성을 들으시고 한 천사를 보내시어 우리를 이집트에서 데리고 나오셨도다. 그런즉 보라, 우리는 당신의 국경선 맨 끝에 있는 도시인 카데시 가운데 있도다.
16 And when we cried unto the LORD, he heard our voice, and sent an angel, and hath brought us forth out of Egypt: and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of thy border:
17 내가 당신에게 간구하노니, 우리가 당신의 나라를 지나가는 것을 허락하라. 우리는 밭들을 지나가거나 포도원들을 지나가지 아니하겠으며, 우리가 우물들에 든 물도 마시지 아니하겠노라. 우리는 왕의 대로로 갈 것이요, 우리가 당신의 지경들을 통과할 때까지 오른편으로도 왼편으로도 돌이키지 아니하겠노라.’”
17 Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy country: we will not pass through the fields, or through the vineyards, neither will we drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king's high way, we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy borders.
18 그러자 에돔이 그에게 말하기를, “내가 나와서 칼로 너를 대적하지 않도록 너는 내 옆으로 지나가지 말지니라.” 하였더라.
18 And Edom said unto him, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I come out against thee with the sword.
19 이에 이스라엘 자녀들이 그에게 말하기를, “우리가 대로로 가겠노라. 그러다가 만일 나와 나의 가축들이 당신의 물을 마신다면 그때는 내가 그것을 지불하겠노라. 나는 그 밖의 어떤 것도 하지 아니하고 오로지 도보로 가로질러 가기만 하겠노라.” 하였더라.
19 And the children of Israel said unto him, We will go by the high way: and if I and my cattle drink of thy water, then I will pay for it: I will only, without doing any thing else, go through on my feet.
20 그러자 그가 말하기를, “너는 가로질러 가지 말지니라.” 하였더라. 그러고는 에돔이 강한 손으로 그를 대적하여 많은 백성을 거느리고 나왔더라.
20 And he said, Thou shalt not go through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.
21 이와 같이 에돔은 이스라엘이 그의 경계를 가로지르도록 통행로 내주는 것을 거부하였더라. 이러한 이유로 이스라엘이 그에게서 돌이켜 떠났더라.
21 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border: wherefore Israel turned away from him.
22 ¶ 그리하여 이스라엘 자녀들, 곧 회중 전체가 카데시에서 여정을 떠나 호르산으로 왔더라.
22 ¶ And the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, journeyed from Kadesh, and came unto mount Hor.
23 그리고 주께서 에돔 지역의 국경 옆에 있는 호르산 속에서 모세와 아론에게 말씀하셨느니라.
23 And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in mount Hor, by the coast of the land of Edom, saying,
24 “아론이 그의 백성에게로 합쳐지리라. 이는 너희가 므리바의 물에서 나의 말을 대적하여 반역한 까닭에 내가 이스라엘 자녀들에게 준 지역으로 그가 진입하지 못할 것이기 때문이라.
24 Aaron shall be gathered unto his people: for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel, because ye rebelled against my word at the water of Meribah.
25 아론과 그의 아들 엘르아잘을 대동하여 호르산으로 그들을 데리고 올라가라.
25 Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up unto mount Hor:
26 그런 다음에 아론에게서 그의 의복들을 벗기고 그의 아들 엘르아잘 위에 그것들을 입히라. 그리하면 아론이 그의 백성에게로 합쳐질 것이요, 거기서 죽으리라.”
26 And strip Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son: and Aaron shall be gathered unto his people, and shall die there.
27 그러자 모세가 주께서 명령하신 대로 행하였더라. 그런즉 온 회중의 목전에서 그들이 호르산 속으로 올라갔더라.
27 And Moses did as the LORD commanded: and they went up into mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation.
28 그리고 모세가 아론에게서 그의 의복들을 벗겨 그의 아들 엘르아잘 위에 그것들을 입혔더라. 그러고 나서 아론이 거기 산꼭대기에서 죽었더라. 그리고 모세와 엘르아잘은 산에서 내려왔더라.
28 And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron died there in the top of the mount: and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mount.
29 이윽고 온 회중이 아론이 죽은 것을 알자 그들이 아론을 위하여 삼십 일 동안 애곡하였으니, 곧 이스라엘 집 전체가 그리하였더라.
29 And when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, they mourned for Aaron thirty days, even all the house of Israel.
