1 그리고 르호보암이 셰켐에 갔더라. 이는 온 이스라엘이 그를 왕으로 삼으려고 셰켐으로 왔기 때문이라.
1 And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for to Shechem were all Israel come to make him king.
2 그리고 느밧의 아들 여로보암이 솔로몬왕의 면전에서 도망쳐서 이집트에 있었는데, 그가 그것을 들었을 때 이러한 일이 있었으니, 여로보암이 이집트에서 되돌아왔더라.
2 And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was in Egypt, whither he had fled from the presence of Solomon the king, heard it, that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.
3 그리고 그들이 그에게 사람을 보내서 그를 불렀더라. 그렇게 하여 여로보암과 온 이스라엘이 르호보암에게 와서 이같이 일러 말하였더라.
3 And they sent and called him. So Jeroboam and all Israel came and spake to Rehoboam, saying,
4 “당신의 아버지는 우리의 멍에를 가혹하게 하셨나이다. 그러므로 이제 당신께서 당신의 아버지께 속한 가혹한 노역과 그가 우리 위에 올린 그의 무거운 멍에를 다소 덜어 주소서. 그리하면 우리가 당신을 섬기겠나이다.”
4 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore ease thou somewhat the grievous servitude of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee.
5 그러자 그가 그들에게 말하기를, “삼 일 후에 다시 나에게 오라.” 하였더라. 그리하여 백성이 떠났더라.
5 And he said unto them, Come again unto me after three days. And the people departed.
6 ¶ 그리고 르호보암왕이 그의 아버지 솔로몬이 아직 살아 있는 동안 그의 앞에 섰던 노인들과 함께 의논하며 말하기를, “너희는 이 백성에게 답변을 돌려주는 것에 대하여 어떤 조언을 나에게 주겠느냐?” 하였더라.
6 ¶ And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people?
7 그러자 그들이 그에게 고하여 말하기를, “만일 당신이 이 백성에게 친절하게 하시고 그들을 기쁘게 하시며 그들에게 좋은 말들로 말씀하신다면 그들은 종신토록 당신의 종들이 될 것이니이다.” 하였더라.
7 And they spake unto him, saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants for ever.
8 그러나 그가 노인들이 자신에게 준 조언을 저버리고 자신과 더불어 길러져서 자신 앞에 선 청년들과 함께 의논하였더라.
8 But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men that were brought up with him, that stood before him.
9 그러면서 그가 그들에게 이같이 말하였더라. “너희는 이 백성에게 우리가 돌려줄 답변으로 어떤 충고를 주겠느냐? 이 백성이 나에게 고하여 말하기를, ‘당신의 아버지께서 저희 위에 올린 멍에를 다소 덜어 주소서.’ 하였도다.”
9 And he said unto them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people, which have spoken to me, saying, Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us?
10 그러자 그와 더불어 길러진 청년들이 그에게 고하여 이같이 말하였더라. “당신에게 고하여 말하기를, ‘당신의 아버지께서 저희의 멍에를 무겁게 하셨으나 당신께서는 저희를 위하여 그것을 다소 가볍게 만들어 주소서.’ 라고 한 백성에게 당신께서는 이와 같이 말씀하소서. 당신께서는 그들에게 이같이 말씀하소서. ‘나의 새끼손가락이 나의 아버지의 허리보다 더 굵으리라.
10 And the young men that were brought up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou answer the people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it somewhat lighter for us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins.
11 이는 내 아버지는 무거운 멍에를 너희 위에 올렸으나, 나는 너희의 멍에를 더 올릴 것이기 때문이라. 나의 아버지는 너희를 말채찍들로 징계하셨으나 나는 너희를 전갈들로 징계하겠노라.’”
11 For whereas my father put a heavy yoke upon you, I will put more to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
12 그렇게 하여 여로보암과 온 백성이 셋째 날에 르호보암에게 왔으니, 왕이 분부하여 말하기를, “셋째 날에 나에게 다시 오라.” 한 대로 하였더라.
12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king bade, saying, Come again to me on the third day.
13 그리하여 왕이 그들에게 거칠게 대답하였으니, 르호보암왕이 노인들의 조언을 저버렸더라.
13 And the king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men,
14 그리고 청년들의 충고에 따라 그들에게 대답하며 말하기를, “나의 아버지는 너희의 멍에를 무겁게 만들었으나 나는 거기에 더하겠노라. 나의 아버지는 너희를 말채찍들로 징계하셨으나 나는 너희를 전갈들로 징계하겠노라.” 하였더라.
14 And answered them after the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add thereto: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
15 그렇게 하여 왕이 백성에게 경청하지 아니하였더라. 이는 그 원인이 하나님께로부터 비롯되었기 때문이니, 주께서 실로족 아히쟈의 손을 통하여 느밧의 아들 여로보암에게 전하신 그분의 말씀을 친히 수행하시려 함이라.
15 So the king hearkened not unto the people: for the cause was of God, that the LORD might perform his word, which he spake by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
16 ¶ 그리고 왕이 자신들에게 경청하려 하지 않는 것을 온 이스라엘이 보았을 때 백성이 왕에게 대답하며 말하기를, “우리가 다윗 안에 무슨 몫이 있느냐? 그런즉 우리는 이새의 아들 안에 아무 유산도 없도다. 오, 이스라엘아 모든 남자마다 너희의 천막들로 향하라. 그리고 이제 다윗아, 너 자신의 집이나 돌아보라.” 하였더라. 그리하여 온 이스라엘이 자신들의 천막들로 갔더라.
16 ¶ And when all Israel saw that the king would not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? and we have none inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel: and now, David, see to thine own house. So all Israel went to their tents.
17 그러나 유다의 도시들 안에 거한 이스라엘 자녀들로 말하자면 르호보암이 그들을 통치하였더라.
17 But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
18 그때 르호보암왕이 공세를 관리하던 하도람을 보냈더라. 그러자 이스라엘 자녀들이 그를 돌들로 쳤더니, 그가 죽었더라. 그러나 르호보암왕은 예루살렘으로 도망치기 위해 자신의 병거 위에 급히 몸을 실었더라.
18 Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram that was over the tribute; and the children of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. But king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
19 그리하여 이스라엘이 다윗의 집을 대적하여 반역하였으니, 오늘날에 이르니라.
19 And Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.
