1 이제 히스키야왕의 제십사년에 이러한 일이 있었으니, 아시리아 왕 센나케립이 방어가 강화된 유다의 모든 도시들을 대적하여 올라와서 그것들을 점령하였더라.
1 Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the defenced cities of Judah, and took them.
2 그리고 아시리아 왕이 라키시에서 랍샤케를 엄청난 군사와 함께 예루살렘으로 히스키야왕에게 보냈더라. 그리하여 그가 세탁공의 밭의 대로에 있는 위쪽 연못의 도랑 곁에 섰더라.
2 And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem unto king Hezekiah with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller's field.
3 그때 집을 감독하던 자이자 힐키야의 아들인 엘리아킴과, 서기관 셰브나와, 역사 기록관이자 아삽의 아들인 요아가 그에게 나아왔더라.
3 Then came forth unto him Eliakim, Hilkiah's son, which was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, Asaph's son, the recorder.
4 ¶ 그러자 랍샤케가 그들에게 이같이 말하였더라. “너희는 이제 히스키야에게 말하라. ‘위대한 왕, 아시리아 왕이 이같이 말하노라. ‘네가 신뢰하는 이것은 어떤 확신이냐?
4 ¶ And Rabshakeh said unto them, Say ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?
5 내가 말하노라. 너는 말하기를, (그러나 그것들은 헛된 말들에 불과하도다.) ‘나에게는 전쟁을 위한 조언과 힘이 있도다.’ 하는도다. 이제 네가 누구를 신뢰하기에 네가 나를 대적하여 반역하느냐?
5 I say, sayest thou, (but they are but vain words) I have counsel and strength for war: now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?
6 보라, 너는 이 부러진 갈대 지팡이인 이집트를 신뢰하는도다. 만일 사람이 기댄다면, 그것은 그의 손에 들어가서 그것을 뚫을 것이라. 이집트 왕 파라오는 그를 신뢰하는 모든 자에게 그렇게 하는도다.
6 Lo, thou trustest in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt; whereon if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him.
7 그러나 만일 네가 나에게 말하기를, ‘우리는 주 우리 하나님을 신뢰하는도다.’ 한다면, 이는 히스키야가 그의 높은 처소들과 그의 제단들을 제거하며 유다와 예루살렘에게 말하기를, ‘너희는 이 제단 앞에서 경배할지니라.’ 하던 그 신이 아니냐?’
7 But if thou say to me, We trust in the LORD our God: is it not he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar?
8 그러므로 이제 내가 너에게 간구하노니, 나의 주인 아시리아 왕께 약조물들을 달라. 그런즉 만일 네가 능히 너의 편에서 말들 위에 기수들을 세울 수 있다면 내가 이천 마리의 말들을 너에게 넘기겠노라.
8 Now therefore give pledges, I pray thee, to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.
9 그러할진대 어떻게 네가 나의 주인의 종들 중 가장 작은 일개 대장의 얼굴을 물리치겠으며 병거들과 기병들을 얻고자 너의 신뢰를 이집트에 두느냐?
9 How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?
10 그리고 내가 지금 이 지역을 대적하여 그곳을 멸하려 하면서 주의 명령 없이 올라왔겠느냐? 주께서 나에게 말씀하시기를, ‘이 지역을 대적하여 올라가서 그곳을 멸하라.’ 하셨도다.’”
10 And am I now come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it? the LORD said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.
11 ¶ 그때 엘리아킴과 셰브나와 요아가 랍샤케에게 말하기를, “제가 당신께 간구하오니, 당신의 종들에게 시리아 언어로 말씀하소서. 이는 저희가 그것을 이해하기 때문이니이다. 그런즉 성벽 위에 있는 백성의 귀에 들리도록 유대인들의 언어로 저희에게 말씀하지 마소서.” 하였더라.
11 ¶ Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, unto thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jews' language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.
12 ¶ 그러나 랍샤케가 말하기를, “나의 주인께서 너의 주인과 너에게만 이 말들을 전하라고 나를 보내셨느냐? 성벽 위에 앉은 사람들에게 나를 보내시어 그들이 너희와 함께 그들 자신의 똥을 먹고 그들 자신의 오줌을 마시게 하려고 하신 것이 아니냐?” 하였더라.
12 ¶ But Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?
13 그때 랍샤케가 일어서서 유대인들의 언어로 큰 목소리로 외치며 이같이 말하였더라. “너희는 위대한 왕, 아시리아 왕의 말들을 들으라.
13 Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and said, Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.
14 왕이 이같이 말하노라. 히스키야가 너희를 속이지 못하게 하라. 이는 그가 너희를 구출할 수 없을 것이기 때문이라.
14 Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you.
15 또한 히스키야가 말하기를, ‘주께서 반드시 우리를 구출하시리라. 이 도시는 아시리아 왕의 손안에 넘겨지지 아니하리라.’ 하면서 너희로 하여금 주를 신뢰하게 하지 않게 하라.
15 Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us: this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
16 히스키야에게 경청하지 말라. 이는 아시리아 왕이 이같이 말하기 때문이라. ‘나와 증여물로 협정을 맺고 나에게로 나아오라. 그리하여 너희는 모든 이마다 자기 포도나무에서 나는 것을 먹고, 모든 이마다 자기 무화과나무에서 나는 것을 먹으라. 또 너희 모두는 저마다 자기 자신의 저수조에서 나는 물들을 마시라.
16 Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern;
17 내가 와서 너희를 너희의 본토와 같은 지역으로 옮길 때까지, 곧 곡식과 포도즙이 있는 지역이요, 빵과 포도원들이 있는 지역으로 옮길 때까지 그리하라.
17 Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
18 히스키야가 말하기를, ‘주께서 우리를 구출하시리라.’ 하면서 너희를 설득하지 않도록 경계하라. 민족들의 신들 가운데 어느 신이 그의 영토를 아시리아 왕의 손에서 구출하였느냐?
18 Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, The LORD will deliver us. Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?
19 하맛과 아르프핫의 신들이 어디 있느냐? 스팔와임의 신들이 어디 있느냐? 또 그들이 사마리아를 나의 손에서 구출하였느냐?
19 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arphad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?
20 이 지역들의 모든 신들 가운데서 그들의 지역을 나의 손에서 구출한 자들이 누구이기에 주가 예루살렘을 나의 손에서 구출하겠느냐?’”
20 Who are they among all the gods of these lands, that have delivered their land out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?
21 그러나 그들은 그들의 침묵을 지켰고 그에게 한 마디도 대답하지 아니하였더라. 이는 왕의 명령이 있어 말하기를, “그에게 대답하지 말라.” 하였기 때문이라.
21 But they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king's commandment was, saying, Answer him not.
22 ¶ 그때 힐키야의 아들로서 집안을 감독하던 엘리아킴과, 서기관 셰브나와, 아삽의 아들인 역사 기록관 요아가 그들의 옷을 찢은 채 히스키야에게 왔고 랍샤케의 말들을 그에게 알렸더라.
22 ¶ Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
