1 그러자 히스키야왕이 그것을 들었을 때 이러한 일이 있었으니, 그가 자기 옷을 찢고 굵은 베로 자신의 몸을 덮었으며 주의 집 안으로 들어갔더라.

And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD.

2 그리고 그는 집안을 감독하던 자인 엘리아킴과, 서기관 셰브나와, 굵은 베가 덮인 제사장들의 장로들을 아모즈의 아들 예언자 이사야에게 보냈더라.

And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests covered with sackcloth, unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.

3 그리하여 그들이 그에게 이같이 말하였더라. “히스키야가 이같이 말하나이다. ‘이날은 곤경의 날이요, 꾸짖음의 날이요, 신성 모독의 날이니이다. 이는 아이들이 태어나려 하는데 출산할 힘이 없기 때문이니이다.

And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of blasphemy: for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.

4 아마도 주 당신의 하나님께서 랍샤케의 주인인 아시리아 왕이 살아 계신 하나님을 비방하라고 보낸 그의 말들을 들으실 것이요, 주 당신의 하나님께서 들으신 그 말들을 책망하실 것이니이다. 이러한 이유로 남겨진 남은 자를 위하여 당신의 기도를 올리소서.’”

It may be the LORD thy God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God, and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that is left.

5 그렇게 하여 히스키야왕의 종들이 이사야에게 왔더라.

So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.

6 ¶ 그러자 이사야가 그들에게 이같이 말하였더라. “너희는 너희의 주인에게 이같이 말하라. ‘주가 이같이 말하노라. 네가 들은 말들, 곧 아시리아 왕의 종들이 나를 모독한 말들을 무서워하지 말라.

¶ And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say unto your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard, wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.

7 보라, 내가 그의 위에 광풍을 보내겠으니, 그가 소문을 듣고 자신의 본토로 되돌아갈 것이라. 그런 다음에 내가 그를 그의 본토에서 칼에 쓰러지게 하겠노라.’”

Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.

8 ¶ 그렇게 하여 아시리아 왕이 라키시를 떠났다는 것을 랍샤케가 들었으므로 그가 되돌아갔고, 립나를 대적하여 아시리아 왕이 전쟁하는 것을 발견하였더라.

¶ So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah: for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.

9 그리고 사람들이 에티오피아 왕 티르하카에 관하여 말하기를, “그가 당신과 전쟁을 치르려고 나왔나이다.” 하는 것을 그가 들었더라. 그런즉 그가 그것을 들었을 때, 그는 히스키야에게 전령들을 보내며 이같이 말하였더라.

And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, He is come forth to make war with thee. And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,

10 “너희는 유다 왕 히스키야에게 이같이 일러 말하라. ‘네가 신뢰하는 너의 하나님이 너를 속이며 말하기를, ‘예루살렘이 아시리아 왕의 손안에 주어지지 아니하리라.’ 하지 못하게 하라.

Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God, in whom thou trustest, deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.

11 보라, 너는 아시리아 왕들이 모든 지역들을 모조리 멸함으로써 그것들에게 행하였던 것을 들었도다. 그런데도 네가 구출되겠느냐?

Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by destroying them utterly; and shalt thou be delivered?

12 나의 조상들이 멸한 자들, 곧 고잔과 하란과, 레젭과, 틀라살에 있었던 에덴의 자녀들을 그 민족들의 신들이 구출한 적이 있느냐?

Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed, as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Telassar?

13 하맛 왕과 아르프핫 왕과 스팔와임 도시의 왕과 헤나와 이와의 왕이 어디에 있느냐?’”

Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arphad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah?

14 ¶ 그러자 히스키야가 전령들의 손에서 편지를 받아 그것을 읽었더라. 그런 다음에 히스키야는 주의 집에 올라가서 그것을 주 앞에 펼쳤더라.

¶ And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up unto the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD.

15 그러고는 히스키야가 주께 기도하며 이같이 말씀드렸더라.

And Hezekiah prayed unto the LORD, saying,

16 “오, 그룹들 사이에 거하시는 분, 곧 만군의 주 이스라엘의 하나님이여, 당신, 바로 당신만이 홀로 땅의 모든 왕국들의 하나님이시니이다. 당신께서 하늘과 땅을 만드셨나이다.

O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth.

17 오, 주여, 당신의 귀를 기울이시고 들으소서. 오, 주여, 당신의 눈들을 여시고 보소서. 그리하여 센나케립의 모든 말들을 들으소서. 그는 살아 계신 하나님을 비방하려고 사람을 보냈나이다.

Incline thine ear, O LORD, and hear; open thine eyes, O LORD, and see: and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent to reproach the living God.

18 주여, 참으로 아시리아의 왕들이 모든 민족들과 그들의 나라들을 황폐하게 하였고,

Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations, and their countries,

19 또 그들의 신들을 불속에 던졌나이다. 이는 그들이 신들이 아니었고, 사람들의 손에서 나온 작업물에 불과한 나무토막과 돌이었기 때문이니이다. 그러므로 그들이 그 신들을 멸하였나이다.

And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.

20 그러므로 오, 주 우리 하나님이여, 이제 저희를 그의 손으로부터 구원하시어 땅의 모든 왕국들이 당신, 바로 당신만이 주이신 것을 알게 하소서.”

Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD, even thou only.

21 ¶ 그때 아모즈의 아들 이사야가 히스키야에게 사람을 보내어 이같이 말하였더라. “이스라엘의 주 하나님이 이같이 말하노라. 네가 아시리아 왕 센나케립을 대적하여 나에게 기도하였으므로,

¶ Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent unto Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Whereas thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria:

22 이것이 주가 그에 관하여 전한 말이라. ‘시온의 처녀 딸이 너를 멸시하였고, 너를 경멸하여 비웃었도다. 예루살렘의 딸이 너에 대하여 그녀의 머리를 흔들었도다.

This is the word which the LORD hath spoken concerning him; The virgin, the daughter of Zion, hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee.

23 네가 누구를 비방하고 모독하였느냐? 또 네가 누구를 대적하여 너의 목소리를 크게 높이고 너의 두 눈을 높이 들어 올렸느냐? 바로 이스라엘의 거룩한 이를 대적하여 그리하였도다.

Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.

24 네가 너의 종들을 통하여 주를 비방하였고 이같이 말하였도다. ‘내가 나의 많은 병거들을 통하여 산들의 높은 곳으로, 레바논의 측면들로 올라왔노라. 그리하여 내가 그곳의 키 큰 백향목들과 그곳의 선별된 전나무들을 베어 쓰러뜨리겠노라. 또 그의 경계에서 높은 곳과 그의 칼멜의 숲속으로 들어가겠노라.

By thy servants hast thou reproached the Lord, and hast said, By the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars thereof, and the choice fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the height of his border, and the forest of his Carmel.

25 내가 땅을 팠고 물을 마셨도다. 그리고 나는 포위된 장소들의 모든 강들을 나의 두 발바닥으로 말려 버렸도다.’

I have digged, and drunk water; and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of the besieged places.

26 내가 어떻게 그 일을 행하였는지와, 먼 옛날의 시대들부터 내가 그것을 형성하였음을 너는 오래 전에 듣지 아니하였느냐? 이제 내가 그 일이 이루어지게 하였으니, 네가 방어가 강화된 도시들을 황폐하게 하여 폐허 더미들이 되게 한 일이라.

Hast thou not heard long ago, how I have done it; and of ancient times, that I have formed it? now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay waste defenced cities into ruinous heaps.

27 그러므로 그곳들의 거주자들은 기력이 약하였으니, 그들이 좌절하며 당혹스러워하였도다. 그들은 마치 들판의 풀 같았고, 푸른 풀잎 같았으며, 옥상들 위의 풀 같았고, 그것이 자라기 전에 말라비틀어진 곡식 같았느니라.

Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded: they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as corn blasted before it be grown up.

28 그러나 나는 네가 거하는 곳과 네가 나가는 것과 네가 들어오는 것과 나를 대적하여 네가 분개하는 것을 아노라.

But I know thy abode, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy rage against me.

29 이는 나를 대적하는 너의 분개와 너의 소란이 나의 두 귀에 이르렀기 때문이라. 그러므로 내가 너의 콧속에 나의 갈고리를 끼우고 너의 입술에 나의 굴레를 씌울 것이요, 네가 왔던 길로 내가 너를 돌려보내겠노라.

Because thy rage against me, and thy tumult, is come up into mine ears, therefore will I put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.

30 그리고 이것이 너에게 표적이 되리니, 너희가 올해에는 저절로 자라는 것들을 먹을 것이요, 둘째 해에는 같은 것에서 돋아나는 것을 먹을 것이며, 셋째 해에는 너희가 뿌리고 거두며 포도원들을 세우고 그것의 열매들을 먹으리라.

And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such as groweth of itself; and the second year that which springeth of the same: and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruit thereof.

31 그리하여 유다의 집으로부터 탈출하여 남은 자는 다시 아래로 뿌리를 내릴 것이요, 위로 열매를 맺으리라.

And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward:

32 이는 남은 자가 예루살렘에서 나올 것이요, 탈출하는 자들이 시온산에서 나올 것이기 때문이라. 만군의 주의 열심이 이것을 행하리라.

For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.

33 그러므로 아시리아 왕에 관하여 주가 이같이 말하노라. ‘그는 이 도시 안으로 들어오지 못할 것이요, 화살 하나도 거기에 쏘지 못하고, 그곳 앞에 방패들을 들고 오지도 못하며, 그곳을 대적하여 둑 하나도 쌓지 못하리라.

Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shields, nor cast a bank against it.

34 그는 자신이 왔던 길, 바로 그 길로 되돌아갈 것이요, 이 도시 안으로 들어오지 못하리라. 주가 말하노라.’

By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith the LORD.

35 이는 내가 나 자신을 위하여, 또 나의 종 다윗을 위하여 이 도시를 수호하고 구원할 것이기 때문이라.’”

For I will defend this city to save it for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake.

36 그때 주의 천사가 나가 아시리아인들의 진영 안에서 십팔만 오천 명을 쳤더라. 그런즉 보라, 그들이 아침에 일찍 일어났을 때, 그들이 모두 죽은 시체들이었더라.

Then the angel of the LORD went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.

37 ¶ 그렇게 하여 아시리아 왕 센나케립이 떠났고, 가서 귀환하여 니네베에 거하였더라.

¶ So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.

38 이후에 그가 자기 신 니스록의 신당 안에서 경배를 드리고 있었을 때 이러한 일이 있었으니, 그의 아들들인 아드람멜렉과 샤레젤이 그를 칼로 쳤고, 그러고 나서 그들은 아르메니아 지역으로 빠져나갔더라. 그리하여 그의 아들 에살핫돈이 그를 대신하여 통치하였더라.

And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Armenia: and Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.
